Jamming the new Overkill now. Could this be the best 17th album in a band's career ever?

But really, it's pretty solid. They've aged a lot better than most revived or long-running thrash metal bands.

Chicago XVII was pretty jammin'. Now, let's get the hate-train rollin' for the new Dragonforce!

e: best 17th album ever? Motorhead's Inferno? Neil Young's 17th was the utterly forgettable Landing on Water. Springsteen's (the other) Wrecking Ball was his 17th, and was pretty good.

He's been introducing "hosed with a Knife" that way for years. It's quite the bon mot.

I saw CC on some catastrophe of a festival tour with Gwar, In Flames, and a few others maybe ten years ago. George Fisher called my wife and I "a couple of faggots" for sitting halfway up the pavilion seating eating rice krispie treats instead of joining the other 200 or so attendees down in the pit.

That's my Corpsegrinder story, and I play several instruments

Anyway, the new Dawnbringer dropped yesterday. It's good, full of riffs and self-indulgent guitar wankery that would make J. Mascis blush, but I feel that while on the one hand he's honing his sound toward something very consistent, they're in danger of contracting Amon Amarth disease and putting out the same record over and over.

The more I think about it, Black Anvil's "Hail Death" might be my favorite album from this year. I gather that it alienated a lot of their fans, but that's what happens when you change things up. Lots of tempo and mood changes along with some post-hardcore and more traditional metal elements.

This is probably the best point made so far. 90% of subgenre distinctions can be made simply through logo analysis. Also seconding the power metal thread, all you losers need somewhere to talk about Nightwish and Jag Panzer or whatever in peace. No clean singing, 666 and hails etc.

I've been listening to this band Ghost Bath a lot over the last few days. They're from North Dakota but got away with pretending to be from China for years through a cunning strategy of never doing interviews or giving out pictures of themselves. They're "post" black metal, which if I remember correctly is red meat for thread hate but I'm sure some of you will like it.

Their records tend to be kind of forgettable but they are an awesome live band. And like someone else said, they're last so you can just bail if they're not your thing.

I'm really curious to hear new music from Black Breath. I ran into their bass player at Deathfest last year and he said that their new material was trying to "capture the same kind of magic" found on Boston's first record. He was also really, really blazed.
