There's a lot of talk about tech-death, can anyone recommend stuff that's specifically like later Origin? Kind of spacey, but still pretty good song structure and awesome riffs. So not Rings of Saturn.

Haha, I've actually heard of them! I was really big into Colonizing the Sun a few years ago. Definitely stuff in that vein, I should relisten to it.

Well, they're not specifically tech-y, but have you tried Supuration or Paranormal Waltz? They're more old school stuff but they have the weird spacey sound/atmosphere that you be looking for.

I mostly listen to amazingly cheesy folk, viking, and power metal. Despite that, I never could get into any of the Asian bands (except early Galneryus). Lately though, I've been really enjoying Tengger Cavalry. Mongolian themed folk metal, featuring throat singing, and a horse-head fiddle. The interesting thing about them though, is that they seem to be as influenced by western technical death metal, as they are folk metal.

A better example is available on Spotify

Tengger Cavalry is pretty great. China actually has quite a few great metal bands.

I've got a few more, most of them black metal:

Deep Mountains
Mother Darkness
Midwinter
Be Persecuted

If anyone knows any decent Chinese death metal, I'm all ears.

Anyway, the reason I'm asking about this is because I'm an artist, and good music is my muse. I got some great results today with that song in particular helping to drive my drawing, and so I'd like to see if I can find other metal songs that might send my cerebellum into overdrive.

Listen to the rest of Painkiller. Then start at the beginning of Priest's discog and work your way back up to it (or just listen to Unleashed in the East a hundred times). If that isn't something that sounds enticing, then check out Virgin Steele, Manilla Road (the best band on the planet), and Pagan Altar.

On the proggier side of stuff you really cannot go past Virgin Steele either. They're one of those rare bands who actually manage to use keyboards tastefully and incorporate interludes successfully. 'The House of Atreus Act I & II' and 'The Marriage of Heaven & Hell Part I & II' are their best set of albums and worth it if you enjoy genuinely epic music.

I honestly think that Invictus, the stand alone album between the Marriage and House sets, is their single best album. But when it comes to those five albums you really can't go wrong.
