Lmao, I just saw the new Pain of Salvation video. Look at it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QKmOJl4GXQ I am convinced it's a shitpost. It can't not be. I am very glad my English is bad enough that English lyrics pass me by unless I concentrate, because, well.

Septicflesh are drowning out basically everything. Tbh., I guess Dream Theater would work pretty well with an orchestra. They like their wankery a lot, and the music leaves enough room for an orchestra to be heard. Plus they'd get the opportunity to borrow a real singer

I think Alkymist's Sanctuary is going to be my album of the year. I haven't had an album sink its hooks into me this deeply in years. I probably sound like a broken record about this but drat that band needs more recognition. It's like Triptykon, but different.

I’m trying to come out of the fog. So I know it’s premature, but what have y’all liked best this year? I just want some cool new poo poo to listen to with a minimum of energy expended. Hoping hearing something awesome reignites my interest in tunes. I've been screaming about Alkymist for months now. I didn't know I needed such a grooving before. Anyway, The Ocean is releasing a new album next week. I can't loving wait. All the tracks they've released so far were great and so were all their past albums. I wonder if the instrumental album will tower over the normal one again…

Meanwhile, I'm binging on Devin Townsend again, and I've been watching the Live at Albert Hall DVD. That is one powerful loving concert with an insane mix. I can hear every instrument, audience reactions whenever appropriate, choir. I can hear little hits on the cymbals while Devin is screaming his heart out. I suspect this was mixed by DT himself, it has to be. I don't usually notice the mix much but this is egregiously pristine. And also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MblUp55TNww

Devin Townsend is interesting because he went through a lot of different sounds. It's fascinating reading his biography because when he quit drugs he went on a productivity spree of several utterly different albums. Compare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL9Aohgd79I with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u81zmQrib9g, it's obviously him but completely different. And then back to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQaETtF_dzQ. You can find everything in between in his discography. He usually has a ton of "musical" in his stuff when he's not deconstructing badgers.

To be perfectly honest, my first reaction to the new Gojira song is that it sounds like a pastiche of past Gojira songs. Like they just cut together their old songs and now it doesn't flow anymore.

Arte has recorded a bunch of Hellfest 2022 live performances, but for some reason hosed up the audio on a few of them (compressed like early Kazaa). It's a bit weird. Zeal & Ardor got the "good audio" treatment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIlTyWaYXGE&t=265s Jinjer got permission to travel from Ukraine to the concert but got hosed over by compression: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ8f3PiUzdQ Among other weirdnesses, the German Arte site has fewer videos than the French one… Might also be geoblocked somewhere. Pretty cool to have a public broadcaster do professional recordings, though. e: Perturbator sounds okay as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tmmndF5wtk Antigravitas fucked around with this message at 12:44 on Jul 6, 2022 |

Vargatron posted:Been listening to Distance over Time by Dream Theater and it's kind of refreshing how they pared back the song lengths a bit and made the drum production sound actually good. It's a bit ridiculous that it took me about two bars of the opening track to go "yup, sounds like Dream Theater". The drums seem a bit more prominent in the mix as well. They still produce prime ripened cheese. Gonna make a controversial statement here: Dream Theater is good, actually. Good cheese.

I can entirely tune out lyrics that aren't in my native language. It's a great ability to have. The exception is Riverside's new album. I have entirely turned on that one purely because of the lyrics.

Fires in the Distance is extremely my kind of poo poo. The vocals could be more expressive, but overall I'm happy with melodeath with some doomy parts and lots of great melodies. Idiopathic Despair is a great album closer https://firesinthedistance.com/track/idiopathic-despair e: In this part from 4:40 on, they do some really fun stuff with the guitar sound. It somewhat reminds me of Alkymist's Draugr, even though they aren't that similar. Antigravitas fucked around with this message at 22:10 on Apr 30, 2023 |

I think my review of Holocene is "I wish there was more like the latter third of Atlantic, instead most of it is like the middle third of Atlantic". There are cool ideas but they spend too many songs meandering without building suspense or going anywhere. Honestly one of their weaker albums that I won't return to too often, except perhaps to certain songs (Preborial especially, but Subboreal is also good) e: Re-reading, this sounds harsher than intended. It's an okay album. I am not setting my The Ocean collection on fire over it. But it's one of their weakest albums to date. Antigravitas fucked around with this message at 19:54 on May 19, 2023 |

quote:Robin Staps explains about the writing process behind Holocene: “The writing process of every album we’ve ever made started with me coming up with a guitar riff, a drumbeat or a vocal idea. This album is different since every single song is based on a musical idea that was originally written by Peter (Voigtmann, synths). He came up with these amazing synth parts that were already sounding huge in pre-production, and he sent me some of those raw, unfinished ideas during mid lockdown 2020… and while it was all electronic, it had that definite Ocean vibe to it. It made me want to pick up my guitar instantly… and so I did, and it didn’t take long until we had an inspiring creative exchange that was heading towards totally unforeseen but very exciting places.” That explains a lot actually. I've been listening to Limbus, and it sounds good. Real ominous mood. https://shrvl.bandcamp.com/album/limbus
