My Amon Amart recommendation is to just take one song and put it on repeat and then spend your money on other albums that don't all sound the same.

So to continue this, if I like the last 5 albums by Amon Amarth what other sorts of music should I get into. I don't really listen to any other growling bands, but something about them just clicks 100% with me. I'm otherwise a huge fan of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, which aren't exactly the same sort of music.

What are your feelings on vocals that are more shouty than growly?

Everyone with the Bathory boners... this is *not* me bagging Varg's contribution to metal, or the quality of his music at all. All great stuff, but it needs to be remembered half of the reason for the praise heaped on Bathory is the the *context* in which the music was made. There was nothing of it's ilk before. This is one of the biggest reasons Bathory love has been perpetuated through the ranks of black metal fans. It's a sub-cultural acknowledgement of the roots of the whole genre, and thus calling out "how loving good is Bathory" is like saying "yeah man, I was there from the start."

If we just altered time, and someone already else covered the same ground Bathory did when black metal was emerging, and Bathory's stuff was released in 2012 with some slicker production, I can almost guarantee that no one would pay even half as much attention. This is the sadness of the black metal paradigm as a whole. Anyone who denies the existence of the "older and more obscure is somehow of more musical/artistic merit" cliche within black metal is not only kidding themselves, but is also the biggest kind of poser--the exact kind of poser they are hoping to avoid being.

This is coming from a long-term black metal fan. I almost got an Abbath-mid-crabwalk tattoo on me once, before a good mate slapped sense into me. Serious.

What does Varg have to do with Bathory?

That is a terrible point to be making though.

Sad Wings of Destiny is still a fantastic album. Well written music is good no matter how old it is. If you don't like it, that's fine, that's just personal taste but I don't really hold with your assertion that metal now is better than metal then.

Any of you guys into the whole "rare, collectible" side of the business happen to know if the original Osmose digipak version of Necromantia's Scarlet Evil Witching Black is particularly rare? Reason I ask is that I came across an ebay auction asking $250 for it which seemed pretty excessive.

Yeah, but $250? I'm pretty sure i traded a couple of crappy cds for the one i have and i even got the original pressing ancient pride mcd as well.

I suppose I've just never thought of metal cds as being worth lots of money.

Before a lot of reissues for the more 'cult' bands, people would pay ridiculous amounts for some albums. I'd try and sell a few Trouble and dISEMBOWELMENT releases I had duplicates of, to try and get my money back ($10), and they'd go for over $50 sometimes. Some cases where you'd see cds reach obscene figures, but you'd usually equate vinyl as the more valuable format though where people paid upwards of the hundreds.

Ancient Pride digi isn't that rare though is it?

I dont think its rare but I dont think its a digipak either, I could be remembering wrong though.

I think the main reason people oppose experimenting in death/black metal is that while (for the most part) the band doing it is very good at the metal bit they usually aren't terribly good at whatever they're experimenting with.

Who is hating? At best you'll find people (at least here in the thread) who will argue the merits of their various albums but always at least like one of them.

Like, I think Reign in Blood is completely overrated but the stuff before it is really good.
