^^^^ While I may not have the largest background in crust punk, I think an exception could be made since crust and grindcore are so closely linked together these days. As mentioned above, you've got bands like Rotten Sound, Mumakil, and Trap Them really doing it right by blending the two elements together. Even though the grindcore is still more prevalent in their music, you can't deny that there are quite a few passages that follows the crust formula, as well. It seems that a lot of modern bands are really beginning to incorporate the two styles and continue to blur the lines between them. Actually, now that I think about it, crust isn't metal. But, that isn't to say that there aren't metal bands that incorporate crust into their music, so I guess you could talk about crust-infused grind and so-forth in this thread.

And no good albums of the year? Protest the Hero, Leprous, And So I Watch You From Afar, Sylosis, and Unearth have all put out sweet albums

There have been some good albums put out this year, but none that would be considered "great" and be contender for Album of the Year or whatever arbitrary poo poo people argue about. Not to mention, those bands are the best you can offer when trying to defend this year? You are doing it wrong. Very, very wrong.

The only album that could have been contender for Album of the Year was the latest Napalm Death that was slated for this coming October, but alas, it was pushed back to February '12, instead.

Now, to bring it back to good music for a second, there was a five-way split released this year under the name of "Split Torso Trauma" and it featured two tracks each by Antropofagus, Prion, Mass Infection, Putridity, and Infected Flesh. It is definitely for fans of the usual Unique Leader-styled brutal death metal bands and is quite enjoyable. I'd say Antropofagus, Putridity, and Prion are my favorite portions of the split.

What the hell does this have to do with the Misfits not being metal? No need to get all butthurt about it because they don't fit in this thread. Nobody is taking away what the Misfits have contributed to music as a whole. Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf are huge inspirations to lots of metal musicians, but guess what? They aren't metal. Am I taking away their achievements to the world of music? Hell no. They are incredibly talented individuals and enjoyable to listen to. They just aren't metal.

Well, holy poo poo, I guess it's our fault for discussing music that the majority of posters in this and previous threads listen to and enjoy rather than rehashing the same bands (even if they're good) over and over again. Definitely check out Judas Priest as they basically fit every band you listed. Rob Halford is a God, and the mans pipes are still just as awesome as they were decades ago. Nuclear Assault would work perfectly with your mention of Anthrax, too; "Handle With Care" is my favorite album of theirs. For Dethklok recommendations, I would definitely say check out At the Gates, Amon Amarth, The Crown, Satariel, Canopy, Vehemence, and a lot of other melodic death metal bands that I'm missing off of the top of my head.

Every single Metal scene ever has been largely fueled by competition. That's how the Slayers, Morbid Angels, Darkthrones, etc all became the trend setters in their eras and genres. They rose above their peers by making better music and being chosen by their scenes and the traders. That's why Slayer became the legends and Attitude Adjustment didn't. It's only natural to measure yourself up against others and try to exceed them, especially in a group setting filled with teenaged and young adult males.

You are aware that there are bands who do not care about any type of commercial success or being trend setters, right? Not everything has to be in the context of "we're better" or "you're worse". To me, that takes away the entire spirit of heavy metal as a whole, anyway. It was meant to be a rebellion against the mainstream, especially grindcore with how it has taken a stance with it being "anti-music" in some respects.

Not everything needs to be a competition. Can't a group of people get together and play some tunes with another group of people who do the same thing and not have to say "we're better than you"? The answer is yes. Will you see those bands on Headbangers Ball and on the cover of Revolver? No.

Also, does anybody have a clue why iTunes is recommending Disturbed to me because I like Exhumed? Those two aren't even comparable other than they both play instruments and can breathe.

Some of you appear to think that it should be things people "might like when new to the genre" - why should you introduce someone via a band you will later tell them are actually crap? The lists are laughable at best.

Nobody should be making anything unless they actually know something about the genres, and their history. Which rules out any cretin that thinks, for example, Norway is the epicentre of black metal.

It is especially useless when trying to provide "labels" to specific bands, particularly those that we know have contributed very much in terms of musical influence to their respective sub-genres as a whole.

Maybe it's just me, but I have found it is so much better to discover and correctly label bands on your own, that way you do not already have some idiotic pre-conceived notion of an album being something that it absolutely isn't. Sure, maybe give a couple very general bands to start off with, but nothing more than that, otherwise we begin to attach our own dumb subjective thoughts to anything we recommend.

Gr31lly pretty much nailed it all, but to add another band who just has that feel to them would be Funebrarum. The only difference here is that they have a little more doom and slower structured death metal mixed in with that chainsaw buzz.

Their entire discography is pretty stellar, but if you're looking for more fast-paced material like the song I linked, then check out their album "The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams". "Beneath The Columns Of Abandoned Gods" is a great album, but it might be a bit slower than what you're looking for. The split Funebrarum did with Interment is also pretty great on both sides, so definitely check that out if you can.

Another band would be Putrevore, which has Rogga Johansson on guitar and bass and Dave Rotten from Avulsed on vocals. Their album "Morphed From Deadbreath" absolutely crushes in a simplistic Swedish death metal style.
