Yo thanks for posting this because Aquiles Priester owns, and the three albums of Angra hes on are my favorite, and this youtube linked me to a vid of him playing DEATH's Symbolic which was unreal. I wish more bands had the balls to cover DEATH and do it well.

So I've listened to Time a few times () over now and I have to say it's a lot more different than what I was expecting. Certainly, I had been expecting more guitar solo's than this. I feel like the massive amounts of synth and symphonic effects detract from it, but I still like it quite a bit. I'm kinda wishing he'd just released Time 2 with it though.

When there were in Calgary during the summer I was kinda disappointed with the length of their set, and they literally did not take breaks between songs. The singer is a cool dude though and always hangs around to chat after a show so I guess I cant complain.

My top albums for the year were definitely Be'lakor, Ne Obliviscaris, In Mourning, Gorod, and Hour of Penance. I like death metal. Next year I have extremely high hopes for the new Vader, Amon Amarth, and Wintersun albums. I hope Time II is a step up from Time I, since I considered that a bit of a let down overall. Vader has literally never written or made anything bad, so I know I dont have to worry about them.

henpod posted:Time I has only just clicked for me, I was disappointed at first at how bomabastic and long the songs were but the other day I suddenly loved it. 'Sons of Winter and Stars' is like a mixture of 'Winter Madness' and 'Battle Against', whilst 'Land of Snow and Sorrow' has the same mournful melody as 'Death and the Healing'. Its a complex album, and like Devin Townsend's Deconstruction just takes time (har) to appreciate. I liked it a lot, but it's annoying that he says "ITS A HARD LISTEN YOU CANT HANDLE THIS poo poo IN ONE SITTING" (literally why he split it in 2 albums) but then half of it is filler poo poo/intros

Measly Twerp posted:I've been an Arch Enemy fan for years now, and a fan of at least one Carcass album. However a lot of melodeath doesn't really do anything for me, even Amon Amarth which I still do listen to. So finding The Absence is great, more so since it's not about vikings, or any other genre of song writing, and it has great vocals and riffs. Good news about The Absence, as they've recently lost guitarist Peter Joseph but replaced him with Per Nilsson from Scar Symmetry. They have a new album coming out this year. A lot of melodeath coming out these days is really lovely and uninteresting, but you should try out bands like Insomnium and give older In Flames (like Whoracle and The Jester Race) a shot. Also, Be'lakor is one of the finest melodic death metal bands to come out in recent years. And while I'm on the subject of Austrailian melodeath, Ouroboros is pretty sick too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4Y8jOXLL0E

I got into melodeath with Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom when you could still call CoB melodeath, but I discovered Kalmah one day, and if Arch Enemy is a hamburger, and Children Of Bodom is a 7/11 hotdog, then Kalmah is like Steak to me. Your Mileage Will Vary, but here's one of theirs that I personally like: I like melodeath for the most part but I have never liked Arch Enemy or COB. Kalmah is great though. Other Finnish melodeath to check out are Omnium Gatherum, Mors Principium Est. There's also relatively unknown band that I listen to by the name of Quo Vadis that I think falls under melodic death metal and is worth checking out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXc19p1DumM
