I like the new Mastodon a whole lot but then the only other album of theirs I really got into was Crack the Skye because I'm not very true metal.

Does anyone have any other recommendations for whatever the hell genre The Hunter / Crack The Skye are?

Has anyone here listened to the entire album all the way through yet? I got 2 songs in and had to give up.

Since the new single came out, I pre-empted the 'they aren't metal' debate by making a Nightwish thread here if you're brave enough to admit your guilty pleasure.

Another track from the new Anathema album is streamable here. It's not really metal in any way but it's pretty good. The vibe is still similar to We're Here but I'd say it's got a slight Silent Enigma feel to it too.

So I thought you guys might be able to come up with some awful lyrics but you did a bad job because nobody even posted any Nightwish.

The treetops, the chimneys, the snowbed stories, winter grey
Wildflowers, those meadows of heaven, wind in the wheat
A railroad across waters, the scent of grandfatherly love
Blue bayous, Decembers, moon through a dragonfly's wings

They got bored of making the same album 5 times, so they made one album with 5 album's worth of ideas on it (Unia) and that pretty much exhausted their creative pool.

This song is fine but why did they take a step backwards on the production? A View From The End Of The World has the best production of anything they've done, but they've gone backwards on it. The guitars aren't as awfully fuzzy as they were on Overworld but it's still not a good sign :(

Machinae continue their cycle of great album (Redeemer) bad album (Overworld) great album (View From The End Of The World) bad album then.

I preferred it when the songs had video game references rather than just be flat out about games. Imagine listening to this and having a friend ask you what the song is called and having to answer 'Republic Of Gamers'.

Dream Theater are a band that would benefit hugely from someone not in the band saying 'Don't do that it sounds loving awful'. A huge pool of talent that consistently made awful decisions about their content. Images And Words is fantastic, obviously, and I think Awake, Scenes and the new album are all great examples of what some restraint and focus on the song and not technical ability will do.

They had a WE GOTTA BE METAL stage, in which they made the acceptable Train Of Thought, the weird keyboardy Muse-ish Octavarium (which I actually quite like), the horrible piece of poo poo Systematic Chaos (with their worst song ever on it, and that is saying something!) and the forgettable Black Clouds. That was the worst, and it was pretty much Portnoy's doing. If only Adrenaline Mob had formed in 2001. :(

If you don't think Images and Words in influential I don't know what to tell you. It's not the best progressive metal album ever, that's not what the list is about, but there will be legit 100s of metal bands who cite it as an influence. It really was definitive for it's time.
