Hey, I live near a bunch of GREAT comic shops. If I can find one, would you pay cover price plus shipping? I'd be happy to look. (We're both talking about the O'Neil Question Vol. 1: Zen and Violence, correct?)

I get most of my trades from the public library, so I'm always happy to visit these shops and buy a book once in a while. The only continuing series I'm purchasing (trades only) are Hawkguy, Fatale, and Saga, and possibly FF when the first volume comes out.

I will let you know if I find a copy!

A lot of my recent prime shipped stuff (books and otherwise) has been in crummy padded envelopes. It's ok in most cases but with books, this is a bad way to ship.

Kinda lovely from a shop that started as an online book store.

The last TPBs I bought from Amazon Prime (Hawkeye Vol. 1 and The Shade) showed up in padded envelopes that were far too large to provide any protection, and the covers were beaten to hell. I had to return each book TWICE before finally getting copies I could live with, although the ones I settled for still had minor corner damage to the covers.

One even had a new thing -- a sticker that went over the book, from the top of the front cover to the top of the back cover, presumably to keep it from opening (in the flat padded envelope?!). It stuck to the tops of the pages and did not peel off cleanly, leaving horrible sticky residue on BOTH covers.

I came across a great find today--a big-rear end 1965 hardcover of Jules Feiffer's "The Great Comic Book Heroes" long-form essay and accompanying full-color Golden Age reproductions for a measly $4. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I can already tell it's going to be pretty schway.

I owned that book for most of my life -- a former library copy my mom brought home from the school where she taught (since the librarian was going to deselect it!). It is really great, and when I was a kid in elementary school, diving into DC Who's Who and The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Deluxe Edition, I read it until I pretty much had it memorized.

Today was a great day. A co-worker who retired last month bought everyone gifts before she left, and she got me a $15 gift certificate to our largest local chain of comic shops. I was debating between buying myself Saga Vol. 2 or Fatale Vol. 3 with it, or waiting around for Hawkeye Vol. 2, but today the shops were having a Buy One TPB, Get One Free sale for Independence Day. So I ended up getting Saga AND Fatale for less than a dollar out of my own pocket, AND they had Modern Masters: Mike Allred (my favorite artist) on their 75% off shelf, so I got that for another four bucks. I made out like a bandit!

Interesting they're coming out with a Catwoman by Brubaker volume 3, with the previously-uncollected #25-37.

I have always been a fan and vocal proponent of his run of #1-24, with artists like Darwyn Cooke, Brad Rader, and Cameron Stewart, and own the original four TPBs that collected these issues. I don't know why DC never collected the rest (oh yeah, the monkeys in the Collected Editions Department), but are they actually any good? I know they went for more of a "house style" with artists like Paul Gulacy (which did not appeal to me as much), but did the overall quality of Brubaker's run continue?

A barebones bind costs about $25 so if I can find a trade or hardcover cheaper I buy those.

But if you already own the issues and remove the double-sided ad pages (including back covers), you can get 25-30 issues bound in each volume, making it more economical than shopping for trades.

Plus, these days, you won't get much for selling your singles.

My best friend was psyched to just find a hardcover copy of Morrison's JLA Volume 1, the hardcover Deluxe Edition, for cover price. Now we're both searching in vain to find him a Volume 2 hardcover, but the very few sources for it have it marked up into the $60 territory.

Is there any possibility that DC will release an Omnibus of Morrison's JLA run anytime soon? It seems like a better deal than paying that much for the Volume 2 hardcover and then tracking down Volumes 3 and 4 around $25 each.

Hey, I have a question about Marvel's Secret Invasion-related TPBs.

My Secret Invasion TPB has a purple spine with the very stylized "Secret Invasion" title in a slanted yellow font. No big deal, it's a stand-alone volume.

My New Avengers Volumes 8 and 9 TPBs are titled Secret Invasion Book 1 and Secret Invasion Book 2. Those just have normal black spines, matching the rest of my New Avengers TPBs with a normal yellow font. I recently picked up Mighty Avengers Volume 3, titled Secret Invasion Book 1, and it matches all of those as well. They look nice together, and I like matching spines.

BUT, today I found Mighty Avengers Volume 4, titled Secret Invasion Book 2, at a used bookstore where I have store credit, and the spine was purple, with the slanted yellow font. And come to think of it, I've seen lots of other Secret Invasion tie-in TPBs at comic shops with the purple spines and slanted yellow font.

What's the deal -- multiple print runs obviously, but which came first, and which are typically cheaper and easier to find? I wanted to buy that Mighty Avengers Volume 4, but it would have really bugged me that it didn't match Volume 3 at all.

This really is a thing for me. I'm still hunting all over trying to find Sandman Volumes 6 and 10 that match the rest of mine (the print run where each volume had a different color of the rainbow along the spines), and if I ever end up with a fully-matching set, I know I'll be overcome with a sense of relief.

Does anyone own the Geoff Johns Flash Omnibus volumes? How are they? I see I can get them for $50, $45, and $60 on Amazon, and I remember the few issues I read being pretty good. But I'm also thinking it might be a little cheaper to track down the individual issues if I can average about a buck each, and then get them bound. It would take longer and be a lot more effort, but I find that kind of thing fun, now that I'm hardly buying any comics or toys anymore.

But most importantly, did his Flash run stay good, and is it worth owning for that kind of money?

Awesome! I found the Captain Cold issue (#182) in a dollar bin yesterday and bought it because I love Cold on the show and always heard good things about that story. There were several other issues from his run there too. Not all of them, but at least a third, maybe half, and possibly more buried in other boxes. That's what got me thinking about it, this used bookstore warehouse that opens once in a while, with hundreds of longboxes of unsorted comics, all for a buck apiece. A patient enough man might be able to piece a complete run together.

Thank you for checking, as always! $50 and $45 seem reasonable (the Amazon prices for 1 and 2), but I'm reading that the out of print Omnibus 3 had several pages printed out of order, which is already an annoyance. And all the TPBs are long since out of print and looking pricey.

Amazon is also showing a Flash by Geoff Johns Book One TPB with the same contents as Omnibus 1, with a cover price of $40 and a preorder price of $29.49, which seems like a great deal if we get two more like it. But the listing says it's coming December 1st (way to move fast winning over the fans of your hot new show, guys!), and DC will probably either stagger out the next two volumes once per year or just lose interest and give up in the middle.
