Autovista
Autovista is brand-spanking new for Forza 4. 26 cars have been modeled in high detail, inside and out, for you to walk around and explore using Kinect or a controller. Open doors, pop the hood, rev the engine. Each car has a half dozen or so ‘information points’ with spoken audio commentary as well as an extended commentary by Jeremy Clarkson .

World Tour
Forza 3’s calendar system for progressing through the single player career mode has been replaced by World Tour. Instead of a linear progression, World Tour is consists of ten seasons geared to your car preferences. Three events are presented at a time, matched to your current car. Switch to another car and the events will adapt to your new choice. As well as conventional races, World Tour will offer alternative events such as Top Gear Bowling (knock down pins with your car), multiclass racing (cars from different classes share the track) and ‘Chase’ events (1 on 1 race with traffic as obstacles).

Rivals Mode

quote:

Rivals mode is basically a combination of career events, time trials, and multiplayer. It allows you to play against your friends in a diverse group of challenging events, even when your friends are offline. Your friend is represented on track by a ghost, but not one of our classic transparent “jellyfish” ghosts. It’s a fully liveried car--more similar to how Forza 3 multiplayer races work when you have them set to “collisions off.”

For every Rivals mode event you are automatically assigned a rival (usually an Xbox LIVE friend), or you can manually set any player on the leaderboard as your rival. By beating your rival, you get bonus credits based on that rival’s leaderboard percentile rank and the size of the board. If the rival is in the top percentile on a well-populated board, their bounty is very large. The sizes of these bounties are server-driven. So, we can increase or reduce the bounties as the community shows its preferences.

Furthermore, if you challenge and defeat a rival who also happens to be a friend or fellow club member, that person will receive a message in their message center inviting them to try and beat your time.

You can advance through the career and level up using nothing but Rivals mode, if you choose. Win or lose, playing in Rivals mode gives you the same basic XP and credit payout schedule as career and multiplayer races.

Forza 3 Profile Import
If you owned and played Forza 3, you can import your profile and get a head start in Forza 4. Based on your Forza 3 driver level, you start your Forza 4 garage with these cars.

If you have any of the following cars are in your Forza 3 profile’s garage, you start your Forza 4 garage with Forza 4 version of the same car.

The 'Secret' import is the 2006 HKS Time Attack Evolution CT230R DeLorean DMC-12. As well as cars you can also import your saved vinyl groups from Forza 3. Entire liveries can’t be imported.

DLC
Turn 10 plan to release monthly 10-car add on packs.

quote:

Car Tokens: Credits will be readily available in Forza 4, but for players who don’t want to wait and save up for the elite Forza 4 cars, we’re introducing car tokens. While you can always buy cars with the credits you earn in the game, car tokens in Forza Motorsport 4 are a brand-new way to access the cars that matter most to you. Players will be able to purchase car tokens via the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, either individually (80 MS Points, $1), in six-token packs (400 MS Points, $5) or in 13-token packs (800 MS Points, $10). The in-game credit value of a car will determine its token price—the more expensive a car is in the game, the more car tokens it will cost. The most expensive cars in Forza 4 will cost three tokens; the majority of cars will cost either one or two car tokens.

Season Pass: Today we announced our Forza Motorsport 4 Season Pass, a DLC subscription package for Forza 4 players. Purchasing the Season Pass will give you access to the first six months’ worth of Forza 4 add-on packs—plus one free add-on pack (the American Muscle Car Pack, which we also unveiled today). The Season Pass will cost 2,400 MS Points ($29.99) and represents a 30 percent overall discount as compared to purchasing the DLC packs separately. Individual 10-car packs will cost 560 MS Points ($7) in Forza Motorsport 4. We are also introducing the ability to buy some DLC cars on a per item basis, a feature which will offer players more flexibility and choice to get the cars they want. One side note of interest for Forza 4 DLC cars: Unlike in Forza 3, DLC cars will be seamlessly integrated into World Tour mode—both as AI cars in races as well as in-game gifts you can be rewarded when reaching a new level.

What about racing wheel controllers?

quote:

Wheel options that will work with PC, PS3 and Xbox 360:
Fanatec Porsche Wheel Turbo S - no longer available in Fanatec's store, but there are some unused ones still floating around at various retailers outside of the US, if you really want the full leather rim and original grey wheel base. $249.95 for the wheel only. Pedals and shifters are extra, and there is a range of choices on those as well.
Fanatec Porsche GT2 - Essentially the same as the PWTS, still available on Fanatec's store, features an Alcantara rim and the same internals as the PWTS, and a black base with a cool "GT2" logo. $249.95 for the wheel only.
Fanatec CSR Wheel - Very similar to the PWTS and GT2, but with a few updated internal parts. Honestly the main difference from what I've seen is that the mass of the wheel rim on this product is lighter, which makes turning and changing lock direction a little snappier but overall is very similar to the GT2. Same base unit, now in black with red vents. $249.95 for the wheel only.

If you are primarily a road car driver, you will probably be happy with the GT2 as the look and feel of it is more reminiscent of your standard sports/exotic. If you prefer a more stripped-down, Racecar feel, you might want to go with the CSR wheel as the lighter rim gives a slightly snappier, easier turn feeling, and the styling is aimed more at the racecar enthusiast with Alcantara touches on a faux carbon fiber rim.

All of these wheels are nicer than the Logitech G25/G27, and have the added advantage of working on the 360. The Logitech products will never ever ever work on the Xbox 360 without Microsoft or Logitech retrofitting a piece of hardware to the existing wheels, which is never going to happen so you should just sell it, buy a Fanatec, and get over it - if you're still holding out hope that someday your G25 will work. It won't.

Coming soon (Later than November/Launch of Forza 4)
Fanatec CSR Elite Wheel - This one will be twice the wheel that those previous 3 Fanatecs are - all metal internals, two FFB motors (over the 1 in the Porsche line), a detachable/swappable wheel rim so you can customize to the type of cars you like to drive, and a variety of onboard mounting points for items such as shifters, handbrakes, cupholders, and the like - including an optional mount so you can use an iPhone/Droid for telemetry through such PC games as iRacing.) This one will be $499.95, for the wheel only.

All Fanatec wheels have upgradeable firmware (if you own a PC), an on-board tuning menu, and variable degree settings from 210 degrees up to 900 degrees of rotation. All Fanatecs also come stock with paddle shifters, so you do not need to order a shifter kit to use it - however, you will need pedals. Fanatecs also work with G25/G27 pedals and also the Microsoft Wireless Wheel pedals, make sure to request an adapter when you order as I don't think they are sent stock any more.

You can compare Fanatec options here:
http://www.fanatec.de/html/pw_overview.htm

Buy Fanatec products here:
http://www.fanatec.de/

Read about Fanatec developments here:
http://www.911wheel.de/

Do not buy the plastic Porsche shifter, the new metal internal "CSR Shifter" is a massive improvement over those original ones and is only $20 more if you are ordering new.

Clubsport Pedals really are the extra option that takes the Fanatec wheels to the level of Holy poo poo This Is Amazing (as is detailed nicely below by Ringo Star Get), so if you can afford them in the slightest do go ahead and save for them as they are more than $150 better than the standard, $50 plastic pedals. All Fanatec pedals come with a clutch. Once you have your Clubsport pedals, make sure to also buy a tube of dry bike chain lubricant and replace the grease that is on the braking cylinder (or risk having the occasional brake-stuck-on horrors.)

Fanatec has exceptional customer service, but they are a tiny niche company producing products that are so good most people think they're a big corporation - so it may take them a few days to even reply to your email but rest assured they guarantee their products long beyond any reasonable amount of time after purchase and will take care of most issues without the slightest hiccup once you do get into the system.

If you're not quite that hardcore, the Microsoft Wireless Wheel is a very good beginner/entrylevel wheel. You do get what you pay for in this segment, but with some effort you can usually find what was an originally $150 peripheral for $75ish on Ebay. There were build quality issues with this line of wheels, but if you can find one that's in good shape you will not be displeased with the results you get in Forza games. The MS Wireless Wheel was actually used for the development of Forza 2, so the effects and FFB is pretty spot-on in the Forza series. Things to be aware to watch for include broken FFB (the hub that the wheel sits on is geared with plastic, and can become worn down/broken relatively easily if it's been abused), slightly misaligned wheels that never sit quite centered, and microphone jacks that have some buzz in them or don't work at all. Given that this is now a used product only, you're going to have to take a few leaps of faith - but if you do track down a functional one, most users will be quite pleased with what it adds to the game. Obviously this controller will only work with a 360 or a PC (and no FFB on the PC.) If you end up with a MS WW, make sure to stuff a piece of foam rubber behind the pivot on the brake pedal and you will have a million times more braking feel than they are stock.

I haven't used it myself, but I've been seeing that the new Microsoft Wireless Speed Wheel is getting decent reviews as a more casual wheel-like option - it's essentially a controller that uses an accelerometer (like in an iPhone) to tell what orientation you're holding it. Most people went into their reviews extremely skeptical and most came out pleasantly surprised. Missing some buttons that reside on standard controllers, so if you're a manual with clutch shifter, you might be disappointed with the lack of available buttons. Expect to pay about $80 for this. Do not confuse it with a Wii "wheel" as it's not kinect based, it's actually the controller that dictates the wheel position.

Other options include a not-yet-available MadCatz offering (360 only) which does not have Force Feedback, and a Thrustmaster 360-only wheel that also does not have FFB. These wheels only rotate 270 degrees (about a turn and a half to 1.75 from center to lock.) Honestly, I think FFB is specifically what makes these games enjoyable with a wheel so I don't really have much to recommend about these two, but your mileage may vary.

http://www.thrustmaster.com/product.aspx?ProductID=239&PlatformID=8

If you end up with a Fanatec, the Fanatec Rennsport Wheelstand is the best option to mount it on as it is stylish enough for wives to tolerate in the living room, folds up for compact storage, and is rock-solid. Other choices are a full cockpit-setup Playseat, the WheelStand Pro, a $15 TV Tray from Target, or even just mounting it to a small piece of shelving and sitting it on your lap.
Thanks very much to Ether Frenzy.
Ringo Star Get's thoughts on the Fanatec Clubsport Pedals:

quote:

Nothing receives more abuse, dirt, hair, and stanky-rear end feet than pedals. Your cheap-o plastic ones that came with your Walmart wheel were probably fabricated from the melted plastics of Barbie dolls, ready to break at the slightest thought of hitting your brakes when a Shitlord Pubbie decides to be 2Fast2Furious into a turn. It is only natural that the logical component that pedals for racing should be made out of something from the earth that has slain men and animal, and that is solid aluminium and steel.

The Clubsport Pedals, offered by Fanatec, are pretty much the highest in terms of class and quality in console racing. Expect to see $200 disappear out of your bank account when you purchase a set, but it will be the best $200 you spent since that one time in Chicago when a Natalie Portman look-alike street tramp would spout Star Wars quotes to you as she gave you a handy behind the Hang Uppe on the North Side. The proud distinction of these pedals is their solid construction and the inclusion of the God Pedal, the clutch.

That clutch will make you faster. It will make you cooler. You will also lose weight as you struggle and sweat to learn the heel-toe skill that you could never get from Walmart wheels. The next most important piece on these pedals is that brake. Not only does it slow you down, but it has a pressure-sensitive load cell that, when combined with the PU foam in the shaft, gives you a realistic and dead-on brake feel. The harder you press with your foot, like a real brake, the more your car will slow down. No more lovely potenimeters or whatever the gently caress those things are.

"But Sigma, I don't want to spend 200 buckeroos to just race on consoles!" Well guess what Miss Daisy, these fuckers are also USB plug-and-play to your PC. Now you can use these piece of German machinery to play your PC games and be all cool and spergy.

There are downsides. What, you thought God himself blew a God Load from his God Penis and it formed the Clubsports? Well, close, but there are flaws. First off, yes, its expensive, we covered that. The other downside is that it attracts dirt and grime and human hair (I have no idea where it comes from oh god officer I didn't know that she was in my basement don't cuff me my wrists are dainty), so keep a bottle of spray-air and a cloth nearby to keep it pristine. Since a lot of it is aluminum and steel, you'll need to keep it lubed to make sure everything moves smoothly and quietly. This may entail disassembly which can be a huge pain in the rear end if you have manly hands. My deft writer's hands, crafted from years of rubbing virgin cow milk on them and drawing those lovely styled "S"s in my notebook during fifth period German still had trouble getting into some tight spots. Be ready to be frustrated but also be ready to be glad you can adjust stuff like rods, springs, rod position, etc. Shitloads. Third, to have the pedals work you'll at least need one of the compatible steering wheels from Fanatec, which is more money to spend. The last downside is that the combined action of using the clutch and gas will cause your pedals to scoot about, so be sure to have either some awesome floors that the feet can attach to or mount them to something awesome, like an OBUTTO.

Overall, I have no buyer's remorse from buying the pedals. Combined with my GT2 wheel, I am on my way to being a blubbering sperglord when my BMW M3 is getting toasted by Shitlord Pubbies in Audi S8's, but at least I was doing it in loving style.

FINALLY got the chance to download the demo (despite my connection dropping out 6 times :argh:). I've only done a couple of races so far but the handling feel of the cars is massively improved over F3. The cougar is floaty and compliant, without feeling dead. The Zonda actually has snap oversteer, something I never experienced in 3! This is fantastic so far. Too bad I keep accidentally rewinding when trying to shift down due to the non-configurable controller mapping.

Also, hitting cars seems to be much worse about invalidating your next lap than just going off course or rewinding. So hit that rewind button if you tap another car.

Thanks for the tips about using rewind to fix an last minute incidents, I'll have to turn that back on. Now to try and get a decent lap on the last rivals course, good god is fighting a bunch of sports cars doing 40mph going 3 wide annoying. I've had plenty of awesome (for me) laps ruined by cars literally changing lanes and side swiping me down the home straight.

1. Make sure you've set manual transmission in the difficulty menu
2. B to upshift, X to downshift, clutch is left bumper

So it looks like upgrading a car's exhaust now actually gives you a visually different exhaust tip/muffler. So that's cool.

You'll get the hang of it. Just don't mash on it, ease the throttle on slowly out of corners or you'll spin the tyres. If you hear them breaking loose, back off on the throttle right away. Mostly it's a matter of getting to know how much throttle you can give a particular car without losing traction, so just practice more I guess!

  • FM3 vinyl groups importing via profile import happens all in a lump, and if you have a lot of vinyl groups (like most livery nerds probably do) then it takes for loving EVER. I still have a lot of FM3 vinyl group organization to do, but luckily you can repeat the import process--FM4 will automatically overwrite any vinyl groups that have the same name, so you will have to wait even longer the second time around (and third, fourth, etc) but at least you won't end up with a bunch of duplicate vinyls.
  • The new community-created vinyl shapes are pretty good, they look like they might be pretty useful, there are two pages of them.
  • Other than the two pages of new community shapes, the rest of the shape layers are the same ones in FM3.
  • No new fonts.
  • Livery editor basically identical to FM3 livery editor. No stroke/outline option for layers. Still can't set transparency value on a group or selection of multiple layers. Still can't non-uniformly scale a group or selection of multiple layers. Still can't set metallic paint colors on vinyls. Honestly other than the new community-created shapes it seems almost 100% identical to the FM3 livery editor. I have only spent about 30 minutes with it though, I'm looking for differences or new options and I'm not finding any.
  • Matte paint is nowhere to be found--maybe it is a "manufacturer color" paint option for specific cars, like that one Camaro they showed?
  • Same goes for powder-coated wheels. The wheel painting is much more "colorful" than it was in FM3 (in FM3 color painted wheels still looked very metallic, like the painted color was just a thin watery layer on top) but it still is not opaque. If you paint your wheels blue or red or something, though, now in FM4 they definitely look blue/red/whatever.
I'll post more if I come across anything important.

This is disappointing. There were lots of areas Turn10 could have easily improved vinyls and painting, I was looking forward to having new stuff to play with :smith:

e: Are the layer limits still the same? ie 1000 on sides/top

Forza 3 vinyl import was a bit wonky but got it working eventually

Bigshot is nifty but saving the file to a USB drive would be way more practical than uploading and downloading from the forzamotorsport.net site.
I'm pretty disappointed the paint and vinyl editor is almost entirely unchanged from Forza 3 though. There also seems to be a grand total of three new wheel choices which is weak as hell for a game 2 years in the making :(

oh man we only have 7 people in GISH. Anyone who did not get into LLJK because of the 100 member limit should apply to GISH.

Also, we should put club information in the op for people new to the thread so they know where to apply.

SP can you add club info to the op? Or maybe to the reserved post.

Added car club stuff to the second post. If I hosed it up/left something out, let me know.

I don't know how they managed it but Turn10 hosed up the vinyl editor. Vinyls now have an ugly border around them that makes masking anything off look terrible.

This really sucks :(

Also Sunday do you take requests for custom liveries/logos? I have an idea but not the vision so I'm wanting to pass it off on someone who knows their stuff.

Also anybody know what the first patch was for by the way?

Sure, what have you got in mind?

Hi, my name is Dominic Toretto.

The PI system is incredible in this game. This car was pulling laptimes that my 355 Challenge was capable of.

Yes, it's very tail happy, but it keeps surging forward even if it is pointed 45 degrees away from the corner exit.

It was hilarious racing against your ghost in this thing and watching it break loose on every single corner exit, without fail.

I'll be back once I've eked more horses out of the Lancia :argh:

I've been looking for new vinyls to make anyway, so that request came in at the perfect time.

Plus I totally half-assed that S on there. Just could not figure that loving thing out.

After you've been making liveries for a while you will grow to hate the letter S with a burning passion.

Remember that increasing your rear tyre width without a corresponding increase to the fronts is going to provoke understeer when you reach the limit of grip. You can use the telemetry to see if your front wheels are losing traction before the rears and tune accordingly. Ideally, a car with a 50/50 weight distribution should have equal width tyres front and back.
