I'm sure it's been posted in here multiple times, but I watched Bronson last night. Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), starring Tom Hardy (Dark Knight Rises, Inception).

Unreliable-ish narrator fictionalized-true-story biopic of "England's most violent prisoner" Charlie Bronson. Tom Hardy carries this movie, there's minimal dialogue from anyone but him. He's honestly forceful as the faux-intellectual psychopath of the title. The movie takes place in a prison interview format, flashbacks of his life and prison career, and some inner monologue narration where Bronson appears on stage in front of a crowd in a vaudeville-style stage act. <Not really a spoiler but just a piece of great setting/filmmaking you should see on your own.

Violent, comedic, and completely enthralling. Go watch.

Twin Peaks all around is just loving awesome. I could've went into a deep depression when I had no more to watch. I wish Lynch would make another movie or TV show or something.

He guest starred on the last season of Louie, which was pretty great. He may have also directed? His episodes were very Lynchian.

Just watched the doc After Porn Ends and it's an interesting look at adult movie stars who've left the industry. It's pretty interesting to see where some of them are today, and why they originally got in the industry. There's some nudity in the film but nothing X rated.

Uh wasn't there explicit porn footage like 5 minutes in? I didn't watch past that.

The host (Kurt Braunohler) actually toured with the Comedy Bang Bang live show and is a really funny guy. That show just hampers anyone who is on it.

Anybody else checked out that Hemlock Grove show yet? I've watched the first 2 episodes, and I'm not sure what is going on. Seems like a weird show about weird people, but I don't know what the plot is. The only thing I can think of istrying to find out who killed the girl, but none of the characters they are following seem to be trying to do that. I'll try a couple more, I'm glad they released the whole season at once so I don't have to wait weeks to decide if its worth watching.

Mid way through the season today. It's alright... Very convoluted, weird for the sake of it sometimes. Interesting enough, though. I'll keep watching just to see how it resolves.

There is much more effort in trying to find the killer, fwiw.

I'm not about to perform in-depth analysis of a teen-oriented drama, but it's pretty clear that it's not designed to be a love story between the two, rather the love story angle being used to gain favor of the Hunger Games' audience, and thus letting the two win/live.

So I know this is super old news but I watched Hell House last night. Went in expecting "lol Fundies :rolleye:" and ended up with a fascinating and touching look into small-town (crazy Fundie) Christians. The director/filmmaker on this did an amazing job of presenting everyone earnestly, with no obvious agenda other than 'show who they are'.

Ironically the most awkward people (IMO) were the Atheist Teen Mall Goths trying to debate after going through Hell House.

And I can't even think about John raising multiple disabled children alone after his wife cheated on him (and died???) praying away his loneliness and tiredness without getting really really sad.

Christ, what a movie.

Edit: On a different note, I rewatched The American Scream recently, and it just gives me such a love for Halloween. It's a documentary about three families that make scare houses in their neighborhoods in a small town. It's a great movie, and it's directed by Michael Stephenson, who directed Best Worst Movie, and was Joshua in Troll 2.

Watched it a week or two ago. The people were somewhat off-putting at first (and that's maybe me being a judgemental prick) but by the end I was just :shobon:ing over how loving much they love Halloween.

Why can't a story just be a story. If it's good it doesn't need to be dressed up with hackneyed tricks.

As a film it was amateurish and pretty lousy, only saved by a really really interesting story.

The Perfect Host is vaguely reminiscent of Funny Games in that it's bizarre, plays with reality (but not nearly much as the entire 'gimmick' of Funny Games does, just within the characters' universe), and is a psychological thriller. I enjoyed it.
