I'm looking to get some Surly brews, most notably Bender, Cynic, and Coffee Bender. A couple cans of each should do it. Don't have much of a cellar, but I can trade anything I can reasonably get in Chicago (i.e. don't expect Bourbon County or other super rare poo poo I can't reasonably find on the shelf, but Zombie Dust isn't out of the question).

With a FedEx account, you never have to describe anything to anyone. Just print the label, slap it on the box, say "here you go, it's got a label already" and walk out.

Catfish Noodlin posted:This might be a dumb question I missed an obvious answer to even after reading the OP, but how do you gauge the trade value of a beer? I'm not so much concerned about maximum value as I am getting something fun and interesting in return to try, but I've got no framework to make sure I'm not making a dumb trade and have never really tried this kind of thing before. Unfortunately I think the only way I can think of is to read trade forums pretty much constantly. At some point you'll get a better handle on it. People generally frown on threads like "what can I get for this beer" but if you word it like "here is a beer I want, what kind of ammo do I need to land it?" they'll bite. Some general rules of thumb: - If the beer you have is a distributed shelf beer and is not called out specifically in trades (Pliny, Zombie Dust, etc.) it is probably worth as much in trade value as its dollar value. - Trading quantity on your end for quality (on their end) is very difficult though it's easy for the one with quality to trade for quantity. Don't expect to be able to trade $200 worth of shelf beer for a vanilla Dark Lord, for example.

Any advice on how to determine appropriate trade value? The only way is to read the trade forums. A lot. None of those beers are particularly valuable, but if you want to try them, go nuts. Sour Reserve is also substantially better than DDG, so there's that too. I like doing $4$ when doing local stuff most of the time as everyone's on equal footing, or kicking in a few locals to make up any cash discrepancy in two beers of equal rarity but differing costs. But rarity is worth something too, which is why when I see trades like FT: Rare ISO: Case of BCBS I don't poo poo on them.

Just so you know because you're fairly new to the trading scene, wording a post something along the lines of "what can I get in trade for this beer I just bought?" is poor form. Put together a more specific list of things you want, and do something like "hey could I trade Abraxas for one of these three beers?" You'll get people making GBS threads on you for the latter, but I think they're wrong. edit: "What does it take to trade for x" is a more acceptable wording as well.

1) Don't trade beer you don't have in your hand. Exceptions: Pre-trades (and make it clear that it's a pre-trade) for beer that you will definitely be receiving in the near future (i.e. in-person picking up a predefined allotment, etc.). And your trade partner doesn't ship a drat thing until that beer is in your hand. 2) Drink more locals. You're not in the middle of North Dakota; there are likely plenty of good breweries and beers in your area. You appeared in the beer thread in October, and I can understand that someone might not have found that thread but still have had been drinking good beer for a while, but it seems like you're trying to jump in to the 'whales' game way too drat early in your beer drinking 'career'. Slow down. Trading away beer you just traded for is a good way to burn through your pocketbook without actually getting you more beer.

Cervixalot posted:Is it worth trying to trade for a BCBS Rare at this point? I think I could probably snag one for the combo of my Proprietor's + Cthulhu, but I think I recall hearing that Rare is past its prime at this point, and with a new batch coming in 2015, I may just be better waiting it out. Thoughts? Rare might be worth it to the right person. It is the epitome of what BCBS can be, and it was still great when I drank mine in April, but prop + cthulhu is a princely sum to give up. Personally, I wouldn't trade for one again or pay what it cost (I got one at last year's Binny's purchase raffle for $75, and it was worth it then, but I wouldn't pay it again today to drink). BCBVS is almost definitely not worth it at this point. It's still a great beer, but it is no longer the vanilla bomb it was fresh. Just do the vanilla bean recipe with some regular. That reminds me, I need to use up some vanilla beans... crazyfish fucked around with this message at 19:04 on Dec 9, 2013 |

On the rare occasions that I trade now (and only in-person), I find it's a lot easier to get deals done on lower-tier bottles using BA. I throw up FT: chocolate rain and get tons of replies. TalkBeer tends to have a more "seasoned" crowd so stuff like that doesn't move nearly as easily there.
