Some thoughts:
1) I ordered Lynch, a box of Depleted, a box of Beckoners, Graves, and Tannen. Seems odd his box includes three Illuminated (when will you EVER field that many?!) but no Depleted (which you NEED, probably a minimum of two in every game) or Beckoners (minimum one in every game). Concept sold me, he looks insanely fun to play; make everyone Brilliant, draw a shitload of cards, attrition the enemy to death.
2) Rail Golems are beastly and an army with Mei Feng, Emberling, a Rail Golem, 2 Rail Workers and a Fire Gamin will be really really nasty at 25. Stoking up golems is really really easy and boy, they can just beat the absolute poo poo out of everything in sight. Activate Mei Feng, Railwalker -> Terminus -> Badass Pose -> Tiger's Claws -> Condensation -> Vent Steam -> Roaring Boiler -> Superheat; now you've used exactly one (1) general AP, done a shitload of damage, and there's burning tokens all over the place. Activate Rail Golem, go to town (as an example: Head of Steam (hopefully with Redline) -> Refuel ->Release Fury w/Build Pressure or Fierce Determination, Pain Train, lather rinse repeat). With Knock Aside and enough Rams to trigger Redline and keep your boiler stoked, you can easily cut through an entire crew's worth of dudes, and 10 Wds with Armor +2, Hard to Kill, and an ability to heal keeps them alive. I also think running Kaeris alongside Mei Feng is worthwhile; it'll be hard to fit Kaeris as well as a Golem and its associated support duders, but then you can take Kang, some Rail Workers, 3x Union Miners, Johan, and a Gunsmith or two and run the Bread and Roses army.
3) Gremlins are my primary faction and both of the new Gremlins are incredible. Gracie is useful in a Som'er pig pile with Stank Eye and Vintage Swine, but I play gunline and so she's of limited utility. On the other hand... Wong has magical attacks and counterspell, and most importantly, a 5" aura of immunity to terrifying. He's worth it for that alone with Gremlins. Burt doesn't look it, but he's the first melee powerhouse Gremlins have. He's Cb 6 with 2/3/4, which doesn't look like much, but he's got critical strike and a ram built in, Ophelia can give him another ram, and if he flips one as well his damage total is 5/6/7 which sort of speaks for itself. He's also got a 10" teleport into melee and a respectable Cg of 8, and he's cheap, cheap, cheap. Plus he can pawn wounds off on Bayou Gremlins. I think I may take him instead of Francois in my Ophelia list; he's got the same additional shots trigger without dealing a bunch of wounds to himself, and he can help out the family if they get into a jam in melee. Plus his background is just excellent.

:suspense: Please tell me this is one of those "Neat trick you can pull off once in a blue moon, when you get exactly the right triggers in exactly the right order, and your opponents are exactly the right distance apart" things, and not something she can do every turn/game for next to no effort.

You need a 7T for Terminus, a Crow for Badass Pose, a Tome for Condensation, a 6T for Superheat, and any number of Rams to trigger Redline on the Golem. So it is kind of Tome heavy, but the only ones of those triggers I'd say are essential are Superheat and Terminus, so that's two tomes. Mei Feng's whole deal is her insane stacking of triggers and you're going to be seeing a lot of it. Basically Railwalker is a series of teleports between friendly dudes within 5" of each other, Terminus lets her finish that series with a free Jackhammer Kick, Badass Pose lets her cast a free Iron Skin (+2 Armor on herself or a friendly within 6"), then Tiger's Claws is a melee attack that can trigger a free Vent Steam, she can automatically then cast Superheat to add Burning Tokens to everything inside a Vent Steam (and that's all Vent Steams within 10," not just the one she just created). Also Tiger's Claws hands out Burning Tokens. The reason it's important to get burning tokens out there is so that when the Golem casts Refuel, which takes a 10 suitless and has no resists, he can pull enough burning tokens off of enemies within 2" of him to get to 5 for Pain Train. Redline adds burning tokens when he makes attacks, and he gets some for free, so I think it's doable.

The big deal isn't even Mei Feng, I don't think; it's the ability to activate your Rail Workers and shroud the enemy in big clouds of delicious steam (and stoke up the Rail Golem's boiler), then activate her and Superheat all of that steam to hand out Burning Tokens like candy, then activate a Rail Golem.

A Rail Golem with access to 7+ Burning Tokens (not a hard number to hit; it gets one for activating, one for Walking twice, one from a ram trigger on melee attacks, can pull them off of enemies, and can be given them by Emberling, Rail Workers, Fire Gamin, etc.) is an absolute terror in melee, since it gets two activations, has effective Melee Expert on a Cb6 paired weapon (with the option to flip an extra card on attack and/or damage by discarding more tokens), can heal itself, etc etc etc. I mean, this is a model that can and will shred everything it can reach without difficulty. This crew is also very very mobile because the Golem can discard a burning token to charge for 1 AP and Mei Feng can bounce around with Railwalker.

Also he's a big walking train who whacks people with a piece of rail.

Beckoner targets friendly Hungering Darkness with Honeyed Words! Cheat down DEF, it's a hit! Hungering Darkness takes 1 damage and suffers Brilliance.
Activate Hungering Darkness, gently caress everything up with Tendrils/Heed my Voice. Use Casting Expert to cast Serve me on yourself.

Reading the Storm of Shadows fiction now. I have to say that normally I find the Malifaux fluff to be in pretty dire need of an editor, except where it's impossible to follow and terribly paced; but the new stuff is actually really, really good. Love the story about the Library, the little bit on Herman Croft is ok (if super predictable), the Collodi story's fantastic, the two terrible gunslingers one is great, and Iggy's is not bad.

Let's be fair: there are Malifaux masters that present a negative play experience. Playing lots of crews vs. Hamelin is a drawn-out, frustrating ball of mess; same with Pandora and pre-nerf Dreamer.

Most of the poo poo that people call broken isn't, but compared to Warmachine (a game that has its own balance issues) the imbalance is really jarring. It's a game that's badly in need of a Mk2, if only because of the plethora of identical or nearly-identical abilities with different names.

My Jakob Lynch crew showed up today. Dark Debts box, Beckoner box, Depleted box, Graves, and Tannen. 25 ss crew is 2x Beckoner, 2x Depleted, Graves, Lynch, and the Darkness starts the game off the board for a cache of 4. At 35 I'll throw in the Arcane Effigy and Tannen. Starting turn 2 or so every single Lynch activation will be "activate, walk with Card Trick, cast Dead Man's Hand 3x with the Effigy AP" and then I'll have a hand of ~14 cards and murder everyone :unsmigghh:

Lessons learned with Lynch today:
1) He really, really needs his soulstones. Pac-man spending them too eats through your cache really loving fast.
2) Mr. Graves is neat but expensive and not very hard to kill.
3) Depleted bombs are not as good as they look on paper. They are better. Holy poo poo, depleted bombs.
4) Lynch is really really not hard to kill.

Running dis list at 25 now:

Lynch
Beckoner
Beckoner
Depleted
Depleted
Depleted

This list is 5 stones, 7 if I start with Pac-man off the table. Beckoners should get 10" out there turn one to set up Honeyed Words and Come Hither turn two. Depleted likewise, I want them engaging poo poo as long as I have crows in my hand to blow them up with.

If you're playing Perdita make sure to play with the Wyrd recommended amount of terrain, that is, a complete shitload. And enforce the cover and LOS rules, marking ht of terrain if necessary. She's not so bad then.

Ran Lynch today vs. Von Schill and the Freikorps. Brillianced a Freikorpsmann, pulled him in with Come Hither, and then basically used him as my draw engine-- just cast Dead Man's Hand on him 2x a turn. The Darkness popped out of a dead Depleted and ganked the other Freikorps, and then the guy had to go, but I had just perma-Brillianced his Specialist and was about to Obey it to Detonate Tanks (haha take that flamethrowing motherfucker!)

In the future if my opponent declares Outcasts I think I'm going to take Tannen over a Depleted. It reduces my pool to 3 (5 if I don't start with the Darkness in play, which I usually don't) but he just messes with Hamelin so hard and otherwise that's a really, really hard matchup for Lynch.

Jakob Lynch vs. Rasputina today. Realized one thing: Lynch really, really has a hard time against gunlines. I wouldn't want to take him against Dita. I made some serious mistakes, not least of which was leaving the Darkness off the table at first.

Figuring out some Gremlin lists.

Som'er Teeth Jones -- 4 Pool
+ Som’er and Peaches, Avatars of Indulgence [2ss]
2 Giant Mosquitos [4ss]

Bayou Gremlin [2ss]
Bayou Gremlin [2ss]
Hog Whisperer [5ss]
Malifaux Rat [2ss]
Pigapult [4ss]
Piglet [3ss]
Piglet [3ss]
Slop Hauler [4ss]

This list's first turn is basically Get Yer Bro on a Gremlin twice, hopefully getting the cards I need from Survival of the Fittest and Take a Swig on the third action. Larva one Gremlin and then the Rat, healing all of my Mosquitos to near-full. Everything else moves into position, then most turns go with Som'er cranking out Gremlins and potentially healing them with Swigs until he Manifests turn 4 or so. Until that happens I sling pigs up the board with Sooey and set 'em loose in the enemy army. I could drop the Hauler (I like him for a variety of reasons, not least of which is his ability to heal up a ton of Gremlins at once) and take a Taxidermist, which might work better for pig-slinging. Of course that makes my cache even smaller. Eventually Som'er manifests and gets Sooey'ed up the board, Stik'm in the rear end for Reactivate, and just goes (if you'll pardon the pun) hog wild on the enemy. Up to five melee attacks per activation and two activations is a lot of dead stuff.

Ophelia Lacroix -- 2 Pool
3 Young Lacroix [6ss]

Bert Jebsen [6ss]
Pere Ravagé [5ss]
Rami Lacroix [6ss]
Raphael Lacroix [6ss]
Slop Hauler [4ss]
Wong [6ss]

I'm gonna try this one a couple of ways-- could drop Ravagé for a Bayou Gremlin, which would put me at a much safer five-pool. Jebsen obsoletes Francois in my book, since he's very similar (melee beater with repeatable ranged attack) but much harder to take down and has more mobility. Wong is an amazing counter piece since Colette, Hoffman, Dreamer, and Rasputina all really hate to see him (and Ramos isn't thrilled either). This crew can handle a lot of things the Som'er pig swarm can't, like Kirai (Right Between the Eyes + magical Rami gun via Wong), Dreamer (Inspiring presence, any of the Lacroix clan can blow Chompy right off the board, and Dreamer hates Squeel!) and Snow Storm (just Right Between the Eyes his rear end). Generally, people don't like facing gunlines, especially not Ht1 gunlines that can just hide behind walls and blow you away.

And Austringers are the most important non-character Guild model.
For Gremlins, you need skeeters, piglets and Slop Haulers.

All this from complete safety. She can no longer summon seishin and the power that let her summon dudes into the enemy and damage everyone near itself no longer damages friendlies and ignores black blood.

quite apart from anything else it’s a free, unstoppable 8” push at the start of every turn before anyone activates, that doesn’t cost you any resources— in fact doing it improves your hand! it makes schemes like undercover entourage trivial, it lets you dive in fearlessly since you can just scoot out of combat at the start of your next turn, it does everything you want it to.

While I'm not as familiar with Gremlins as other factions, some of the stuff in other factions need something beyond a cost decrease as well.

They'll have an errata pack and individual cards up on Wargame Vault Monday, and they'll push the errata'd cards to their own website within the week if you just want to print them off from there.

mctavish is beyond bonkers especially with Wong. what he needs is to remain 10ss, but have his gator and gun each be zero-cost Limited upgrades, so he can have one or the other. the gator comes with gator snack, the gun with his other 0

for people without a lot of gremlins in their meta, mctavish with Wong has a range 14 sh 6 gun that ignores cover, ignores randomization into melee, ignores armor, ignores hard to kill, ignores incorporeal, has a 3/5/7 damage track, and he has a 0 action that gives him a 3 inch push, removes a scheme and then has a random secondary effect (controllable if you can cheat from your hand) for either a free attack, draw a card, heal 2, or push 4 more. also he does a LOT of other stuff and has a good melee attack.

he’s absolutely gross and still is at 11

double edit: the other day I was playing him against arcanists. turn two i advance a bayou gremlin and drop a scheme, the on my next activation mctavish gator snacks into it. I cheat a 3 rams from my hand so he gets the free shot, he takes it at the arcane emissary. I flip severe on a -twist and put seven on him. I shoot again, he can’t outcheat me, three more for weak kills it. top of turn 2, and I had an AP left on mctavish to put five points into a Shastar Vidiya guard. absolutely disgusting.

hello dead thread for a dead game

been playing some with Survivors and the Mechanized Porkchop since the buffs. conclusion: they’re a very, very strong all-comers Zipp list
generally I go Zipp, Earl, three Survivors, two Bayous, a Skeeter, and the Porkchop, and the rest are flex slots. The First Mate is always a strong option and lets Earl hitch a ride up the field, then leap away to eat scheme markers and deliver beatings. Burt is kind of absurd with the Skeeter, who delivers him into the action and gives him Fast. A Slop Hauler is reasonable to keep your Survivors above Hard to Kill, a Banjonista helps the Wk 4 Survivors get up the field, and a Gremlin Crier keeps your hand stocked. You can generally fit two of the above options plus upgrades/Bayous to taste.

The basic idea is that you bunker up the Survivors. The Porkchop drops a scrap and then with a 5+ of tomes Earl swallows it to give all Survivors within 6” a + on all attacks. Then they activate, use their 0 to make their weapon a gun with a 9” range, and use Reckless to pour on three shots each at Sh 5 with a 2/4/5 damage track and a trigger for poison. Also, you paid four points for them, and they have armor and hard to kill. They’ll hose basically anything off the table and they have three AP each to run schemes, plus you can heal them trivially with a Hauler or Earl. Zipp just jumps around disrupting the enemy with his BZAP trigger and Up We Go.

I was being sarcastic games alive as hell. I just wish the thread posted more.

Sparks is a bit pricey for what he does. I’ve used him alongside Zipp to Stuffed With Explosives my Up We Go target so I can drop it in the middle of the enemy crew and then hit them with blasts, but that’s a gimmick that only works against people who don’t know it. Basically you take Sparks, Pere, and Zipp along with Poorly Handled Explosives, then you stuff Pere, give him a bomb to hold with Poorly Handled, then Up We Go him into the middle of the enemy crew. A blast triggers off Up We Go (4 damage unreduceable) then Pere activates and blows himself up (5 damage if people fail the duel) then his death bomb goes off (4 damage) then the Poorly Handled bomb goes off (4 damage). You can oneround Seamus or other tanky masters if they’re a little unlucky and anyone who can’t spend soulstones has no chance. It’s a big time gimmick though.

I’d like to see more people try out stuff from the errata. 3 point guild guards seem like a mistake to me. On the other hand GG18 is MUCH less favorable to scheme runners and armies that swarm than 17 was. It’s much more about positioning than dropping schemes.

Competitively, how much do you feel the game rewards people with a deep roster? The crews I like are scattered across different factions, but it seems like list-building being a part of game setup really encourages you to stick to one faction.

I think having 2-3 masters in a single faction with sufficiently different play styles will give you everything you need to compete on every strat and scheme pool. Sure, you probably could eke some marginal value out of completing a faction, but it would be very marginal. The important thing in Malifaux is knowing your crew inside and out.

That said, there are tons of ways to play Malifaux, and there are tournament formats that lock you to a single master or subset of your faction. Most players pick 1-3 masters they like and stick with them. And while I’d love to see a return of tournament Malifaux, the game is still struggling irl if we’re honest, so most of your games will be against friends. Pick a crew you like and buy it!
