The new churches album took a bit to grow on me but it’s been in steady rotation for awhile now. Forever, Get Out, Graves, and Miracle are super poppy but I’m all about it.

I feel like most of their criticism came after an interview where the person asked how big of an influence Zeppelin was for them, and they got chastised for saying it wasn’t really their main goal. It’s poor form to ask a question that is leading to a certain answer, and citing Zeppelin’s influences as their own is certainly the right move, but that got lost because everyone just wanted to read a headline saying “Band that sounds just like Led Zeppelin doesn’t think they were trying to be Led Zeppelin”. Overall I think they’re fine and have a lot of potential. They can be a huge rock band if they play their cards right. Pitchfork writing about them is done solely to clown on them since the target audience for a band like Greta Van Fleet spends zero time on their site. The people I know who dunk on them the most all never shut up about Death Grips or Swans and I don’t know what I prefer to be honest.

I will also champion going to see DFA and agree the pit will get rowdy and it will be loud. It was awesome. Everyone ragging on music is a combination of the Simpsons “keep on rocking forever” and “no it’s the children who are wrong” but I understand it completely because I am continually embarrassed by the new bands coming out of the emo revival scene.

I got great recommendations in the punk thread for this, so asking here too. I didn't listen to much new music this year. What did I miss?

Anybody care about Middle Kids? I had them recommended to me by a friend and am really digging their album, and they put out a single for an EP they're releasing that I'm also enjoying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibyAiAfBtIg bows1 posted:If I can't stop listening to Car Seat Headrest, who else should I listen to If you liked Cloud Nothings check out Japandroids. I didn't care at all for the last album, but Post-Nothing and Celebration Rock are excellent.

As good as it is, Mr. Brightside gets waaaaaaaaaay too much credit for being a half written song that says gently caress it and just repeats itself.

My school's programming council brought... Saves The Day, Motion City Soundtrack, Jack's Mannequin, Kesha, Kid Cudi, and B.O.B. for stuff I went to. I skipped Cute is What We Aim For, The Academy Is..., White Tie Affair, Cobra Starship, and Wale. I was part of the school's radio station and brought Real Estate, Woods, Class Actress, Man Man, No Age, and Cloud Nothings. Meanwhile the school down the road brought the Black Keys, mewithoutyou, Big Boi, Dan Deacon, The Roots, The New Pornographers, Ted Leo, Aesop Rock, Sleigh Bells, and Passion Pit in that same time frame. It really is a crapshoot and you can see where the programming council decided to just bring bands that they wanted to see instead of anything interesting.

I saw Girl Talk at an electronic music festival where he came out dressed up as Troy Polamalu (Steelers football player). He played for ten minutes, had people hand out Arby’s sandwiches to everyone, and sampled alanis morisette’s “you oughta know” the whole time on the oldest function laptop I’d ever seen. It was awesome. Filter doing that tour isn’t too surprising. There’s a venue by me that seems to cater to old bands that were big in the 80s and 90s who still tour without being really big. They were going to play there. Lit was there. Stuff like White snake and and Night Ranger. A million tribute bands. And it always sells out. It’s not a huge venue, but it isn’t exactly small. There’s just a ton of room for nostalgia of that era and money to be made.

Also give Ted Leo a spin if you haven’t already. I feel like he was the Jeff Rosenstock of twenty years ago.

There was a point a few years ago where the Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, and Cage the Elephant all had radio hits at the same time and I could not identify who did what song.

The Walrus posted:oh ok so the ppl who hate arctic monkeys don't have ears, it makes sense now Oh I certainly don’t hate them. It was just a point where I only had casual exposure to them and most of rock radio just kind of blended together at that point. The band they were when they started and the band they were in 2013 are also very different.

Saw Japanese Breakfast last night, really awesome live. The band really shreds and comes together live in a way that doesn’t come through on Jubilee, and that was one of my favorite albums last year. Highly recommend going to see them if they’re in your area.

It’s cool that they’re doing what they want but I do wish it went a little crazier at times. I’m really curious how they were live because the set list for the first show was like three new songs and then the rest from the early albums.
