Is Phoenix indie? They're on boutique labels, played for NPR, and a surprising number of people I know haven't heard of them.

Anyways what I want to do is to complain that they've gone from tracks to which you want to dance & bittersweet ballads to recent albums being (serious?) takes on technology and religion. Every other song has been hearing John Lennon saying "Number Nine" in my head.

M83 sounds like if Beach House were obsessed with nostalgia.

By this I mean Hurry Up, We're dreaming is a very fun album.

What is it about Brooklyn Steel and KEXP that make every performance fire?

Of course acoustics and technical factors like equipment play a role. And they are just well recorded. But it seems that every act brings their A game.

Highly recommend searching for these recordings of your favourite big name indie artists. KEXP performances often make the album version sound like a mixtape. The quality is that high.

I just discovered Phoebe Bridgers.

It starts off as a typical ballad and not particularly special. You can play it in the background while browsing. Then a couple of minutes in it becomes something else entirely. A minute after that it becomes Come on Feel the Illinoise!

Sadly I think this is only song where PB channels Sufjan Stevens.

And you know how I said you can let it play in the background? Well you can. But know that the top comment on YouTube as of right now is "didn't expect to see phoebe bridgers dressed as a skeleton while she passionately kisses an elderly woman but here we are".

I played a boygenius video and YouTube sensibly put on other boygenius videos and songs by one of the trio. Then about six or seven videos in autoplay starts playing Twenty One Pilots songs.

Not like I particularily hate 21 p and it's normal for autoplay to switch up artists after a handful of songs. But what is going on with the AI? Or does YT get paid by the big labels to do this?

Or is YouTube like 'bitch, you've spent enough time being melancholy and twee and pretentious Ima put on some normal people music'?

"Oh man" right back! Thank you for this! From what I've seen so far it seems none of the trio really switch up the lyrics in different performances but the delivery is tweaked. Like just the way she pronounces the word "mean" elevated the verse.

My only quibble is that the scream is too short.

e: Also it's worth noting that Phoebe's collaborator Julien Baker sometimes, not always but sometimes, comes off as one of the most effortless cool persons I can think of off the bat.

MGMT song came on autoplay and this one top comment was all 'Hey did you that know the band has said their earlier work was a joke and parody poking fun at bad taste?'. The responses were arguing what was meant.

If remotely true what I have to say to that is this: Buddy(s), you made a music video themed around the Bacchae, you don't get to turn around and say you were doing it to show indie fans are dumb. That itself would be incredibly pretentious.

Oh yes but I *like* early MGMT so for me it's not about them excusing something bad.

So for me this would be less than the examples you give and more like a novelist publishing their debut rated by both readers and critics then years later saying they were making fun of the reader.

Baker - Best instrumentalist of the three by far. And as I mentioned so awkward it wraps back around to being unimaginably cool on stage.

Bridgers - Best overall solo body of work, so far at least. And a gateway to the others for new fans. Also goes at Eric Clapton and John Lennon on an album with at least some minimal Cream and Beatles influences.

This one is either indie or pop depending on the year of release. As it is, it's indie. I heard this on WFMU and thought it was a track from decades ago but it's a 2023 release. The whole album is this kind of surf-rock.

I don't spend much time listening to Arcade Fire. Not because I dislike them. But whenever they come on I realize I could be listening to The Suburbs. And then after listening to the solid openers, I realize I can skip to the magic outro run of We Used to Wait/Sprawl/The Suburbs Continued.

I do spend time listening to Apologies to the Queen Mary because it is ace.

e: boygenius tax. I like Graceland Too but cannot stand hearing about how it's written as a love song to one of the Phoebe's bandmates. She has had to, on several occasions, remind people that it's a song about doing drugs. In general and on a specific occasion. It's a reverse Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds situation.

I'm not getting the vitriol against Arcade Fire. I've seen it before on here even in GBS. It's just a band.

They didn't do sex pest stuff as far as we know. They didn't proclaim they're the best. They didn't trash-talk Sufjan Stevens or Joanna Newsom. They didn't make a string of inspid records that got overly promoted. They didn't influence others to the degree everyone sounded like Arcade Fire. They just made some albums.

Like I said I don't really listen to them but I don't get it.

With a very few celebrities it's a tad bit complicated. Like one who I know but won't name because this isn't the thread for it. The woman who said he abused power dynamics wasn't even trying to get him charged or sue him. He apologized and said something like 'I showed up to our date in a rented Camry. We met on Bumble. This was before I had a big special. And I begged with puppy dog eyes for her to come back to my place and spend the night. It really didn't hit me that she could have thought I was the one in control. Nobody ever told me about enthusiastic consent.' And I think a slight majority believed him.

But I can most certainly see a Montréal indie rock collective frontman playing up how important he is for plausibly intoxicated undergrads (aka children in all but legal terms).

I have mentioned Apologies to the Queen Mary once or twice before, without anybody pitching in. Not sure if that's because people are familiar with the album but have just moved on from this style of music or are unaware of the Wolf Parade debut.

If you're the latter, listen to the full thing asap. Ideally with videos. There is a reason why it's considered one of the OG parents and grandparents of the indie music that came after.

So the only one other than Sufjan I recognize on that list is Feist. In other times this would mean I have a lot of cool new music I want to check out! Not this year.

Straight off they left me hanging after describe Julien Baker's forte being 'anthemic choruses'. lol. Yeah she has an okay voice but she's the instrumentalist of the trio. Lucy's the anthemic chorus gal.

But might that Marvin Gaye tribute at the top be worth checking out? MG/rap crossovers can be fire. MG/rock, why not?
