I joined the group even though I only really play Dirt 3 the odd time on PC. I do plan on getting AC once the price to content ratio is right for me, if I get a wheel that might come sooner though.

I finally got AC for Christmas and now it just makes me want to get a wheel more. First thing I did though was load in this track and bruteforce through it until I could finally make it to the bottom. My replay is way messier than his, but I managed 7:07.4.

Also while not racing, but still a car sim: I've been holding out on Spintires until I could get it half off. Turns out you can get a steam key from GMG for $16 if you use the voucher Z4364W-7MR5WA-N5BCOO ontop of the current sale. Edit: The Escort Mk2 and Joux Plane were made for eachother. I'd recommend the same that was recommended to me: Start out with the BMW M3 E30 Group A car. The track doesn't matter as much but I started out on Mugello because I wanted to work my way up to the BMW Race event, I also think it has a nice assortment of corners. Also the next project from the guy that did the physics for the Shelby Cobra:

That is a very probable possibility that excites me greatly. But to clarify a bit, the Shelby was mostly done by another guy. This guy did the physics for it though, which are amazing and the most important part in my opinion. This is the first time he's modeled anything, he seems like a natural though: And seeing as he worked on the Shelby, he should have a good par for quality. He also tracked down the only guy with a Quattro in his home country and he agreed to help him record sounds. 4WD physics can't come soon enough.

Again those are the same guys that did the Cobra. Kunos really does need to just hire them already, the detail is astonishing.

I use an xbox 360 controller and it works great. Makes you realize how little wiggle room you get with thumb sticks though, and for the first time ever I've had to use the analogue capability of the triggers. Still loads of fun though, especially if you like time trials, hotlapping is the bread and butter of AC.

Here have the notes I made for last year's version: 1. Install Richard Burns Rally (NOT in Program Files) 2. Run Install_RSRBR_v2014.exe 3. Run Install_Pack_Tracks_v2014.exe (Ensure you have all bin files) 4. Run Install_Pack_ALL_Packs_2014.exe 6. Run game once to create ini, close. 7. Edit RichardBurnsRally.ini to change xres, yres, and fullscreen appropriately. 8. Run any additional optional installers (BTB Country Packs etc) Should be the same for 2015, which I'm installing now, thanks for the heads up! Edit: Confirmed it works, and that it still uses that clunky mod loader. Jehde fucked around with this message at 09:35 on Dec 23, 2014 |

I'd like more tracks more than anything really. Things like night time and weather are just graphics fluff that takes a lot of time to get right, so I can appreciate them leaving those features until later to focus on more important things, like AWD and AI.

holocaust bloopers posted:Night racing and weather are the exact opposite of graphics fluff. Those have a serious impact on racing. Well actually you can already download night tracks or tracks with low traction from weather (i.e. snow), what makes them not ideal is that there's no extensive graphics systems to back them up and make them beleivable, like I don't think headlights even work yet. I get what you mean in that different conditions means different racing, but the biggest purpose of adding those kind of features would be to ooo and ahh at how the cars look with their headlights or how the wet tarmac reflects light. Neither of the features really affect the actual driving, except I guess some dynamic drying tarmac system or something, which I think is what they want to do eventually. I guess I'm biased because I just like hotlapping old sports cars around old touge tracks on sunny days and AC already has that in spades.

track day bro! posted:Honestly AC's physics just feel 'right' to me Yup. For me how much fun I find a driving game depends on how much I can feel the road under the tires. Assetto Corsa just feels so drat good when you're hitting that slip angle going slightly sideways at 160 km/h, or scandi flicking your way up Eau Rouge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_D9enI8ijg This is also why I enjoy Codemasters games so much, they all just feel so good. I haven't played pCARS yet but any footage of it I've seen looks like it doesn't give you a lot of play with the traction, looks like a boring sterile rollercoaster. My understanding is that they are going for more of a GT/Forza style game though, so I'll inevitably hop on the bandwagon eventually for my car unlocking career progression fix.

Pretty much. More so I mean in side by side comparison videos AC looks like it bounces and slides around more, where as pCARS looks like it sticks to the track more. pCARS still looks more realistic in most ways, but AC looks more fun. Again I play a bunch of AC and none of pCARS so biased as hell.

OhsH posted:yeah, i originally read that, set it to 540 and it seemed super off, and it wasn't synced to the wheel in game, which i have no idea matters or not, it looks like the in game wheel only goes to 180, and it does not feel responsive unless i set my wheel to 180. Yeah now that you mention it I noticed the in game wheel only turns like 90 degrees with my controller. RBR's interior graphics aren't too good to begin with though, having no working mirrors nor working gauges is jarring coming from AC. It does feel good though, I had to mess with the steering curvature a fair bit to get it how I liked it though. Jehde fucked around with this message at 08:38 on Jan 8, 2015 |

Looks good so far to me. GPL should probably be in the old sims section, as well as RBR with RSRBR. Rfactor 1 might be worth a mention too since it got greenlit. I might make an effortpost in the new thread currating some of the most notable content mods for AC, since mods are really what AC is all about. The 288 GTO project got removed by Kunos. The guy making it had a couple people helping him with the physics, but turns out that for a basis he decrypted Kunos' F40 files, which is a violation of their copyright. This is a pretty big blow to what was a promising project. He's still allowed to continue the project, he just needs someone to step up to the plate to develop the physics from scratch before he can release anything again. Edit: GhostDog posted:I've been trying the Peyregrosse-Mandagout track and now I really miss a "reset to track" option in Assetto Corsa. Also that mod might not have the highest res textures but in terms of attention to detail and just overall look it puts Kunos' Trento to shame. And while we're on the subject of Trento, are there any improvements planned or is that really supposed to be 1.0? I think Trento is pretty much 1.0, and I get the impression that Kunos doesn't care much about non-circuit tracks. However the recently leaked 1.1 patch notes do have timing support for point-to-point tracks added, as well as 4WD support. I thought about making some basic ease of life "cheat" apps for AC, since the ingame apps just use python. Things like reset to track, a simple teleporter (for retrying specific corners), and specifically for me a more detailed engine/wheel damage display, since I'm so terrible. I'm not sure how extensive the API for the game is though, and I'd need some more freetime before I could look into it. Jehde fucked around with this message at 20:41 on Feb 24, 2015 |

Like it would kill these guys to have high hopes on a game that's been played regularly for years now. PCARS isn't exactly an unknown quantity. I think it has to do with how long it's been in development. Plus I hear they keep changing things, sometimes for worse, sometimes for better. It seems though that the longer they take releasing it, the more flak they get. I hope they release it soon so it can finally be put to rest.

When it comes to GPL, it's probably worth mentioning the GPLPS overhaul mod too. Otherwise the OP is looking great, love how you approach the "physics question". The email should notify me the most reliably and I can quickly claim the third post. Then I guess advertise the new thread in here once it's all secure. I don't know anything about rF2 mods though, I just keep up to date with AC projects. If anyone else does want to currate some notable rF2 mods though, I'd be happy to include them in the mod post. I assume the rF2 section of mods would need less updating. There's already a new mod to update the AC list with. Monte Carlo Sprint Oh and latest news about the 288 GTO: The guy managed to find two physics gurus that are willing to take care of the physics for him, it sounds like they found some more data too. Meanwhile the guy doing the model just learned how to do AO baking, so the next release should be a lot less "flat" looking. Sounds like the mod is picking back up at a good rate though, I'm guessing the next release could be as soon as a month from now. GhostDog posted:My goal was more "less words per sim but more sims overall". I think the only games I'd be okay to take out are netKar and Grand Prix 2, but then again the whole thing takes like 10 minutes to read through so I think it's okay. Oh okay that's cool then. Yeah you do a good job of summarizing each game, so I think it's great as it is then. After all, people can just scroll over the games they don't care about, and you make it easy to do so. GhostDog posted:And some more words on AC track mods: I tried a lot of them and found I really dislike most of the rFactor1 conversions because every corner that isn't flat you'll start bumping over the low poly track mesh. Like, I downloaded nearly everything from racedepartment, and only about a dozen tracks are still installed. Yeah porting old games' mods is still a staple of AC mods. The Ford mods are actually all originally GTA:SA mods if I'm not mistaken. Often what will happen is someone will do a straight port from an older game then release it as is. Often they'll just forget about it after that, but if the mod is popular enough, they usually do second and third passes over the mod to smooth out problem areas and add more graphical detail. I remember Joux-Plane being pretty bad with bumpiness when it first released, it's still pretty bumpy in some corners but it's better now.
