If it's still the same movie and there was nothing wrong with the original cover, I see no need to create a new one. The only logic behind it seems to be "argh, this old thing will never sell the way it is, we need something more hip and current!" which of course is the archetypal bad-reason-to-do-a-thing in any artistic endeavor.

Naturally this is all the more annoying when you're of the opinion that the new one is worse, and I'd say it is. The original cover looks like one coherent and well-composed image that shows a bunch of stuff related to the movie, whereas the new one looks like a bunch of images slapped together. It's not the worst thing ever, it's just... worse.

Also it looks cheap.

It might be distributed internationally by Warner Bros. since, you know, MGM is out-sourcing most of that poo poo since they are a failed piece of poo poo studio with no money and only a library to sustain them (I used to work for them), in fact most of their domestic distribution is done by Fox.

But that doesn't mean the WB creatives designed their Blu-ray cover. I actually don't know for sure, that is a different building altogether but I'm pretty sure WB didn't have anything to do with that. You are right though, that is a better, more cinematic cover.

For international they might have an agenda like, showing a Native American's face and a woman's face rather than just having Kevin Costner's (fading) brand carry it alone. I'm sure there is a lot of research to support the decision, and I'm not even saying it is the right decision.

I still like it.

Opinions about the cover itself aside, I think I can blame the actual publisher (ie Warner Bros.) for the cover with which they release their movie, thanks.

This is bait in order to sell you on an idea for the purpose of making money.

There's plenty of examples of movie posters that manage to achieve both those goals. Just because there's a distinction doesn't mean we can't call out lazy crap when we see it and laud the well done ones when we see those.

That's totally fine, and most of the creatives at least on the major studio side try their very best to generate quality. But the question was why when you have a perfectly good cover would you make a new one, I'm just trying to answer that question.

Hey, this one little word made me remember that one series of movies. It had a shitload of posters.

Critters: Good posters, bad posters and completely off base posters

Critters 2: Consistent sequel poster and TAGLINES

Critters 3: Pre- and Post- DiCaprio

Critters 4: The one I didn't see; thank god

Critters fan posters: The pretty awesome

I'm guessing they wanted to make Critters more of franchise characters or something, so they decided to name the first Critters after those two bounty hunter/intergalactic cops and add 'Critters in ...' to it? Iunno.

If I remember correctly, there wasn't much RAH RAH AMERICA at all. 'Captain America' was a pathetic propaganda pawn for buying bonds, his powers came from a foreign scientist and his team consisted of several different ethnicities and nationalities.

Or am I forgetting it wrong?
