I've been hearing about how good Locke & Key is (and it's drawn by a very good chilean artist so that's a plus) so I've been meaning to pick it up, but I read Joe Hill's short-stories book, 20th century ghost and really disliked his writing. Have you read the book? and if so, is the writing on the comic similar?
What did you not like about his book writing? I've read both and I enjoyed Locke & Key more than 20th Century Ghosts, but I'm not much for the pure horror story he was writing in Ghosts.

In the comic, Hill doesn't over write, he doesn't over narrate, and he lets the artist tell a his fair chunk of the story.

Locke & Key is really good.

A cool comic you should get

Title: The Massive

Publisher: Dark Horse

Team:Brian Wood on words, Kristian Donaldson on pictures, Dave Stewart on colors

Brief Description: The book follows a team of environmentalists as they struggle to keep themselves alive after a massive, total environmental collapse.

It's out today! Go buy it! Don't buy lovely comics!

Forgot this one was coming out. Got it, like it, Wood does a nice job of weaving together the story of where the team is and how they (and the world) got there. It's a disaster scenario that isn't crushingly bleak (like Walking Dead), but doesn't have much joy in it either. Very eager to see where Wood takes it.

Is anyone familiar with the Dark Horse comic Ghost? I've only seen some covers, and they tend to focus on guns and cleavage, but now I guess Kelly Sue and Noto are doing some work on it, and they're people I'd give a chance.

So Ghost, is there anything for them to work with there?

Great self-contained story about a little girl who firmly believes she's a giant-slayer, despite all the real-world evidence to the contrary. At its heart it's a poignant story about a young girl coping with loss. Didn't know what to expect when I picked it up, and totally loved it. I'm not afraid to say it genuinely made me tear up.

Chew

Chew is a tough one to review, because any single element sounds dumb, all the elements taken together sound horrible, but when you actually read the comic it is crazy, hilarious and brilliant. I'm generally not a guy who likes dumb humor, I'm not a fan of Robot Chicken or Family Guy, but when I read Chew, I read lines like "I'm from NASA and I'm here to lick your paintings" and its great and it makes perfect sense in the universe of the comic.

In the world of Chew, a massive avian flu epidemic has made Chicken illegal and the FDA is the most powerful agency in the US. Certain people are also being born with food related powers, such as the main character...

The story rockets around and involves conspiracies, aliens, roosters of mass destruction, vampires, and a USDA staffed by cybernetic version of Charlie's Angels and their cybernetic pets.
The art is really what brings the comic home. Guillory gives everything an energy that carries the story along and adds enough odd background notes to make everything worth reading twice.
The book is consistent enough that the first trade should tell you if you'll like it or not, but I recommend the OSHC Omnivore edition because I like fancy books.

Just got the Skullkickers: Treasure Trove, which is a OSHC collecting the first 2 TPBs. I grew up playing D&D, but I really dislike fantasy now, and this book really just hit the right spot for me. It does a good job with a lot of elements that people tend to do very badly, the main characters are a dwarf and a big guy with a gun, they make quips and have adventures that are more late night roll-playing than lord of the rings. Its all fun light stuff, the stories are well crafted, and the background elements get increasingly silly.
Biggest complaints are probably that the colors were fairly poor in the first chunk of the book. I don't think it was a printing problem, I think the colorist may have just picked colors that tend to blend together, making the pages a chore, but by the end of the first trade things get comfortable. My book had some extra stories at the end, the first two were early anthology stories and weren't great, but the last chunk was stories by other authors and was pretty good (including the one by Clevinger).
If you want light elves and dwarves fantasy, this is worth grabbing.

Graham has a really great "staring up at skyscrapers" feel in his sci-fi. Like there's all these awesome rockets and poo poo all around, and he takes time out to wonder at it occasionally, but most of the time you're wandering to the sandwich shop and breathing exhaust. It has a lot of truth to it.

That sounds interesting and I'd like to hear a bit more about it.

I just got the 2nd Skull Kickers OSHC. I was surprised I liked the first one because I'm really not a fantasy guy, but it has enough smart rear end stuff going on around the main story to be fun. The 2nd book shows a larger plot, but otherwise is about the same as vol 1 in terms of quality. I feel like the book is close to being great, but just isn't there yet, maybe I'm not enough of a D&D guy to love it. I'm not a D&D guy at all, if you are you should check Skullkickers out.

I think the first Powers TPB is the worst. It's still going, but it has been through a bunch of really sharp changes, I'm still a fan. The Gotham Central idea of cops taking on superheroes is a consistent thread through the book, but Bendis isn't afraid to change the characters and more layers get added on.

Southern Bastards was pretty good, but Deadly Class was my best comic this week. Well drawn, unpredictable, good characters, I am a bit surprised how much I like a book about Harry Potter with assassins. Bonus points for the part at the end where RR talks about how autobiographical the book is.
Trees was neat, too. Issue 1 just set up the world, but it's a neat world so I'll follow it for a bit at least.
COWL felt like all episode and very little world or overarching plot. Just a day in the life in a notably different world. A neat day, but the issue did nothing to really introduce anything.

I actually remembered to remove the Abe Sapien series from my pull list due to having a small haul this week. I don't know about you guys, but I find it both bafflingly slow-paced and plodding AND somehow hard to follow at the same time. The transitions between scenes and issues in the same arc are just so inelegant that it struggles to form a cohesive narrative.

It's a shame because the rest of the Hellboy/BPRD franchise is still going strong. I think BPRD in particular has been lately experiencing a second wind after making strides in fleshing out the rest of the BPRD as an organization. For a long stretch of time it was just Abe, Roger, Liz, and Sherman as the mainstays with a multitude of faceless, anonymous footsoldiers as background dressing, but now other field agents have been given the limelight. I have some reservations about how they've let the genie out of the bottle in other aspects of the story, but I've been enjoying the last couple of minis more than others of the recent past.

I hear you. I have the whole Mignola line on my pull list, and I'm thinking of dropping Abe. It's been slow and uninteresting, and the last issue was poorly done as well. I liked Scott Allie's vampire stories, which were also poorly received, but this last issue just lost me.

You're right. BPRD is really making gold out of some things I did not think would work, like Varvara and Iosef. I kind of wish the end was in sight, but it has been consistently good and evolving, so maybe that's fine.

Sex Criminals is just amazingly real for a comic that was advertised as two of the biggest smart-asses in comics writing about people who rob banks while loving.

East of West is pretty much all style, but it's good style, so that's good. The plot is pretty much just Steve Shoots-a-lot looks for a MacGuffin, while awesome villains monologue against him and the human condition.

Caliban 3 came out, and it is still a creepy space mystery instead of a bucket of gore, so good on them. It's like Alien with different characters and this issue hinted at a backstory next issue.

I also picked up the Velvet TPB. Read the first issue, can't wait to get into it.
