I've been running Plex on an RPi4 since the 4 was released. It's great for one transcode at a time, which is about all i have outbound bandwidth for anyhow. I also have it running Nextcloud (which is just barely usable, probably because PHP), transmission, an Atlas probe, and some custom software to rip and transcode optical media. It's also routing traffic for five VLANs to two upstream ISPs. The only reason I can get away with all this because everything is usually idle. I'm also concerned about power use, and this is a great solution. So I'm gonna go with yes, you can run Plex on it 😉

Then it should be pretty easy to back up the read/write parts, because they're isolated, without chewing up a ton of backup space. In my situation, everything is deployed as a docker swarm, so I'd just redeploy it if I ever had to rebuild the r/w partition.

Heads up: there's no default username/password as of last night. This bit me in the rear end and I wound up reading through a ton of source code trying to get my Pi Zero to boot headless and let me log in. You can now drop a file called "userconf.txt" in the boot partition to set up a username/password. I did not discover this last night, and gave up after 4 hours of trying to hack up the undocumented first boot shell script. Anyway. E: a non-snarky answer: The Raspberry Pi doesn't have anything like a boot loader. It does some funky thing where it uses the graphics chip to boot a ROM that reads the first FAT on the first partition of the SD card, parse the configuration file, and then hands things off to the kernel. Nobody's really put the time into having multiple kernels/root partitions, because it's so much easier to just buy another SD card. But if you wanted to do it, I think your first step would probably be to write a chain loader that allows you to select which kernel to boot, and then you can pass in the partition path for the rootfs, and that ought to do it. You might have to mount the same /boot in both operating systems, which could be problematic, so your next step will be to add filesystem code to mount the right boot fs and read the kernel from that. So at a minimum you're going to be writing something like LILO from scratch. Mmmmaybe you can take an existing project like dasboot and hack it into service as a chain-loader. To get this looking something like GRUB is going to take a whole lot of work in ARM64 instructions, and your "Linux nerd poo poo" comment makes me think this might be a hobby project you're not going to have the stomach for. But maybe you do! That would be an awesome contribution to the world and a lot of people would probably find a lot of reasons why they actually preferred this to buying a second SD card. Yeah, I got butthurt. It's been a week. Thanks for being cool about it. As spazzle mentioned, you should be able to run both UIs with just a plan Raspbian install. If I were doing this as my hobby project, that's the way I'd try to pull this off. Big advantage here is not having to maintain two operating systems. The Kodi plugin for parsec makes it seem like maybe you can use LibreElec though? Or at least could... Worth investigating. LibreElec updates itself to some degree so it's ideal for a set top box that you want to just watch movies and not screw around installing security patches. Anyway my advice is still to get that second SD card, but use it to try and figure a way to run both UIs without messing up the Kodi setup you've spent so long tuning. The pi is really well suited to this type of tinkering because it's so easy to swap out the "hard drive" for experimenting. Screwed something up big time? Just put the Kodi SD card back in and watch a movie to unwind.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think VSS would be your "battery in", and VBUS would be "whatever's leftover from the USB connection". 3V3(OUT) is probably "whatever's leftover from the microcontroller on the 3V side of on-board voltage regulator". I have no guesses about what 3V3_EN might be. VSS and VBUS are probably 5V. You can probably run that board at 3V like you want, but hopefully someone who's actually used one will chime in. (You might get better replies in the Arduino thread )

I've been transcoding videos for the last week or so on the Raspberry Pi 4. All four cores are pegged at 100% and I'm even offloading h264 encoding onto the hardware. The case it's in is a gigantic heat sink. Like, the case is 100% heat sink. No fan. It's stayed under 70 degrees the entire time: right now it's at 66. GeekPi aluminum case in case anybody's interested.

I'm frankly surprised you got any performance at all from a GUI running off an SD card. I tried this once for, like, a week. The SD card is slow, and every operation's performance is going to be magnified. Is your filesystem close to filling up? That could impact I/O. Have you been doing any Internet activity with your browser / did you forget to install security patches? Maybe you have malware. Check dmesg output: I expect you'd see some sort of message if you can no longer write to the SD card, but I'm not positive. I can tell you that if you're unable to write, there'd be a hell of a lot more problems than "just feels sluggish generally". So I'm inclined to think it's something else.

Also, there is lots of space available Okay. Is there anything of interest in dmesg output?
