Im finally getting back into gunpla after doing a few kits in the early 2000s, I never painted or did much to my kits out of the box before, but now i wanna really get into it and work my way up and making a lot nicer looking kits

I decided to start with some kits I like but aren't my "favorites" because I want to eventually do a nice job and get RG or MG versions and im not a huge fan of having duplicates.

Went ahead and ordered these kits of Hobbywave:
HGUC 1/144 Gundam F91
HGBF 1/144 Beagguy III
HGBF 1/144 Gouf R35

I've also not got a lot of tools either and I haven't looked them over in a while so they might not be in the greatest shape or quality.

Do you guys have any recommendations of kits of tools or other supplies I should pick up? Also what kind of order I should work on with respect to levels of quality on a build, between panel lines, filling seams, painting spots that would normally be stickers, or fully priming and painting?

I dont want to just jump in and try everything right away, i'd rather work up to it.

It's really not nearly as hard as you think. Get some cutters, a knife, sand paper, and a gundam marker and go to town. You can pick up a full assortment of paints and plastic cement later, none of the kits you got really need them that much.

These are good cutters, I use them sans knife but really don't clean sprue cuts up much.

Thanks!

hmm I think my cutters are ok, i'll probably need to get x-actos and sandpaper and/or files

I have been taking my sweet time on my HGUC RX-78-2. It's taking forever to get this thing to look good. The seams are ridiculous, and everywhere. I think I'm almost there though. Chest needs another coat of blue, and then I have to paint his shield, and he'll be ready for panel lining and weathering. I don't have a work in progress pic at the moment.

Speaking of weathering, does anyone have a good video demonstrating some good weathering techniques? Preferably with a host that is sub 400 lbs and sans speech impediment? I used Tamiya weather master on my last kit, and while I liked the results, I feel like it's really only good for dirt and soot and stuff, not for an actually weathered metal/worn paint look.

Edit: I don't want this guy teaching me about gunpla. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBXkHg4ac94

I bet he could teach you to make a bitchin scratch built Harley Davidson mod for your Zaku.

Well it looks like the Build Burning Gundam might give the 00 a run for it's money in terms of articulation. It's also a lot more compatible with accessories than you might think.

How convincing your gunpla can be making Jojo poses should be an important metric in grading kits.

You're not in deep until you have like two dozen kits sitting next to your desk that you haven't even started, and probably won't, for months, while you're planning your next purchase.

I dont think my wallet could support that. This is about as deep I'll be able to go for a while, but im already eyeing the Ez8 custom and build burning.

Going from a NG 1/144 with less than 50 parts to a monster like that made me freeze up. I closed the box and its still under my bed 10 years later because I cant deal with the trauma

EXACTLY why I decided to get a few HG kits instead of going right for an MG or Real Grade. Im just worried I'll break something or not be able to do it justice.

F91 has the coolest looking torso bit. It's teeny tiny but every part is ridiculously detailed.

Im starting my F91 as well, its a far cry from the Beargguy I finished last week, so I can't wait to get started

Still seriously contemplating dropping the cash on half a dozen Mocks and building a tiny army of mediocrity.

I want to see people buying dozens of mocks and just making stupid clones of iconic kits but in mock form.

Like give one a zaku shoulder shield, the commander antenna and paint it Char red.

or give another the V-fin, trim, and fin funnels from a Nu Gundam.
