So I've finally gotten around to starting one of my prop projects - I'm currently making a Dubstep Gun, from Saints Row IV. I'm making it out of that pink insulation foam, and 3d printing all the detail parts. It's looking good so far: The matrix at the back is going to run little animations, and I just figured out how to get speakers working, and I'll run audio off an old phone that I'll be mounting as the viewfinder. Also planning to add some EL wire. I figure I'll wear my DeadMau5 helmet and run around Edmonton Expo with it.

Yea, I'd love to do a Professor Genki costume, I just don't have time this year.

ARGH. Sometimes, I really really hate being limited by my budget and being unable to actually afford to do things the "best" way. The dubstep gun, being made of pink foam, needs to be sealed. the "ideal" method is to coat it in epoxy resin, which will strengthen it and give it a nice hard smooth surface. The method I can afford is mod podge. It works, but can be finicky, and sometimes it doesn't coat well enough. In this case, it didn't quite coat the area enough, and I've got this happening: https://goo.gl/photos/oQWeqbK4WJ57ZnXE7 that's the worst of it - some desiccation at the tip, and a lot of pitting around that hole. I have a couple of possible ways to fix it, but they're not going to be good. 1) cut the affected areas out and rebuild them. Not really a viable choice, as things are painted and glued. 2) make a "sheath" of white craft foam. I can get a huge piece in white for $10 at michaels, big enough to just glue on, trace it, and trim down. Of course, this adds some width, and makes it a matte finish. Might be the best route though. Other than that, it's coming along - got things wired internally for the LED matrix at the back, and the speaker up front. Had to put a chunk of steel in there to counterbalance the speaker end. Apart from the fixes, I still need to get some aluminum rod or something to make the stylus arm and the front speaker protector.

Thanks, never thought of that. I'd definitely prefer to do something like that. Edit: The front end of the gun is looking good, though. https://goo.gl/photos/EX1yRU1epXwbsgRD6 TwystNeko fucked around with this message at 21:27 on Sep 11, 2015 |

I did a couple, but clearly I didn't do enough. At least it's at the hand finishing stage now, and just about anything like spackle will work, as this is a rigid prop rather than flexible.

They do make EL wire that has a flowing effect. Like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3moYbyQs-g Alternately, strips of RGB leds run by an arduino controller - I've seen some really nice fire effects.

http://blog.kriegsman.org/2014/04/04/fire2012-an-open-source-fire-simulation-for-arduino-and-leds/ is probably the best one. for LEDs, look on Aliexpress. WS2812 strips are cheapish, and you can get them in a variety of LEDS/strip , from 30/m to 144/m.

Assuming you're in Canada, having linked Canadian Tire, there's a lot of resources for cheap EVA foam. 1) Dollarama. Has random packs of various sizes - currently, they have a 20-pack of 8.5x11 sheets, 2mm thick for $3. 2) Canadian Tire - Camping mats, anti-fatigue mats. 3) Michaels - they sell 6mm thick pieces, as well as 2mm thick, and have big rolls of 2mm in white.

I've pretty much finished the dubstep gun. Yay! https://goo.gl/photos/1VErRkDPnuu6ce24A Now that it's done, I didn't realize just how big it was. Sadly, it's too big for me to be able to wear the deadmau5 head. Oh well, ridiculous outfit go!

cool kids inc. posted:This is incredible and HILARIOUS! Well done! All purple outfit with gold accents and you're set. That would be great.. if I had time to do that. Con is tonight! Purple I can do, though. With big fuzzy slippers. Also, the next version is going to 100% 3d printed. I already modelled most of it...

The sliders actually move, and I could have made all the other dials turn too, but I was running out of time. The stupid thing weighs probably 15 pounds. Waaaaay too heavy. I think if I scale everything down 10%, it would be a little less unwieldy. Once I find one of the many pics taken today, I'll post it. edit: found this one: https://instagram.com/p/8EvDuZreO_/ TwystNeko fucked around with this message at 07:23 on Sep 26, 2015 |

You can use this method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGUf1VpvICI They're using purple, but orange would work just as well.

Has anyone checked out the books from Kamui Cosplay? I see I can get all of them digitally for like $25, and their stuff is really great, I'm just wondering how useful they'll be.

I've started building a new DeadMau5 head - my last one got knocked off a display shelf and shattered. I was able to glue it well enough to wear it again for halloween, but I figured it was time to just restart it. This time, I'm going more ambitious than a basic cloth-covered head, like my first one. Instead, I'm doing a Steampunk style, based on this design. So far it's going well - I've designed all the parts in Fusion 360, and I've laser-cut all the shapes I can. I'm looking at getting the ears redone on the CNC router we have at the hackerspace. In the design, I had originally planned to pass power and data to the ears via sockets with neodymium disc magnets in them. As ND magnets are conductive, it would have been an elegant solution to connecting things. Except ND magnets are so strong, they'll pull themselves out of any mount I can design. :< I'm playing with some ideas right now, but any suggestions would be helpful.

McPantserson: Of all things, I found plastic test tubes (filled with binder clips or paper clips) at Michaels. They're about .95" around, and are $1.50 each. They're basically soda bottle preforms. If you can fudge the sizes a bit, that could work. I'm in Canada though, so availability and cost may be different.

Does anyone have a source for a Mandarin-collar shirt? I'm trying to make a vest like this one. At first I thought it was a modified vest, but it's actually just a dress shirt with the sleeves removed, epaulets and a front piece added, which should be a lot easier to make.

I made a flexible LED matrix for a Daft Punk helmet by hand. It worked pretty well, but was incredibly annoying to build. https://photos.app.goo.gl/3FeKzhzb7oZlbWCn2 Basically, plastic cross-stitch canvas has almost the exact spacing you need to put 5mm LEDs in. Wire them into a matrix, and you're good to go. Because the canvas is flexible, it's easy to shape it to fit. I used the HT16K33 board from AdaFruit, which let me do a 16x8 matrix. You can chain them together, as they're I2C boards, so you could make them as big as you like.

I'm almost finished building a 400x400x400 3D printer, and one of the things I want to print is a DeadMau5 helmet - the main globe of the head will fit in the build area, so I figure I can custom design mounting points for the hardware I'm planning to use (BT amp + speakers, beat-detection for animation effects, etc). The block I'm running into is how in the heck do I use Fusion 360 to design in a sphere? I have all the "official" dimensions, and I have a good idea of how to get the angles needed (ie, for an arc, it doesn't go by length of arc, it goes by degrees it covers.), but getting things to play nice is frustrating. Any ideas?

So it's been a hot minute since I've posted on this forum. Last year, I printed and finished this "cybercat" mask, for a Cyberpunk inspired costume. https://imgur.com/a/ZBPppoq this is the initial paint job I did, but then decided I didn't really like the blue, so it ended up like this: https://imgur.com/a/xznHNGP The eyes are are apa102 based led rings, and are sound reactive, with a mic in the chin. I then printed a bunch of parts for a cheap leather jacket, added LEDs, and repainted a nerf gun, to come up with this final costume. https://imgur.com/a/6wMmRAr Sadly, the mask designer is Russian, and got his CGtrader account terminated. Otherwise I'd approach him about possibly modified the mask so I could make the jaw move - it has obvious hinge points, I'm just terrible at modifying 3d models.

Thanks! It's probably the best costume I've made. I'm tempted to do another print of the mask, and electroplate it, which would be really slick. Hell, electroplate all the parts, then do a black wash, mmm. I do want to rework the jacket, as that one is a bit snug, it's a woman's XL, and the fake leather is way too thin. I need to find a cheap "biker" jacket that I don't mind screwing up. Then I have some shoulder armor as well, although that might not fit well with the "enforcer" collar.

Yea, that's the issue I was dealing with. It's all one piece, and would need surgery. Thanks for looking, tho! That being said, I still might do the electroplating, mostly because I really really love the idea of all the parts being this distressed chrome look. there's a relatively easy method, it just uses fun chemicals, lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoJkduIoBF0 But I suppose that I could use a 'chrome' spray and do the wash overtop, would probably be 'good enough'

So, it turns out RTwin, the artist who made my mask, is back on CG Trader, and CG Peers. He's over here: https://cults3d.com/en/users/RTprops/creations Also, he made updates to the mask, including splitting out major color components like the side grilles and light areas, so there may be a reprint in my future. And if you have the original files, in PrusaSlicer, you can "split to objects" and it will break into useful pieces - including separating out the jaw! (but the side grilles are not split out... ) Anyways, I've started revising the costume. I decided I wanted to do away with the leather jacket, because it's so drat hot. I also wanted to have the Thermal Katana, so I've printed one out. Then I ordered a "tactical radio pouch", designed a magnetic mount, and now the katana is secure on my back, yet can be easily removed. Uses 2 pairs of 13mm neodymium magnets, which is possibly overkill as the katana only weighs 200g fully assembled. My next project is to make an arm similar to this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M28087uVTRA I'm just having a hard time getting a basic pattern made. Depending on time, I'll also print a replica gun as well, to replace the painted nerf gun.
