So I just got an Apple TV to go along with my new iPhone. It's really slick looking, even though there are some apps it should have but doesn't (HBO Go, Cinemax Go, Showtime Anytime, etc.). Does anyone know if there are currently any plans on bringing any of those to Apple TV, or is it just a kind of abandoned, forgotten piece of hardware at this point?

Thwomp posted:I'll just repost my answer to this same question when it was posed a few pages back. What I'd really like is just the Comcast/Xfinity app on there. You already have to be a cable subscriber to use it, and it's out on all the mobile devices and such, as well as having a browser based equivalent. If I had that I could deal with the Go/Anytime apps not being up because most of that functionality is in the Xfinity thing already. I also don't see how Roku and Boxee have these apps when Apple doesn't, that's the part that baffles me.

Diabolik900 posted:Roku and Boxee are seemingly trying to get every app they can possibly manage, which does not seem to be Apple's approach. This is true, and I don't really need to see a CNN specific app or anything on Apple TV. Hell, I think the Wall Street Journal one is a bit specific and out of place to tell you the truth. But the 3 for HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax seem like pretty major selling points. Well, maybe not Cinemax, because who actually gives a poo poo about terrible soft core porn in this day and age, which Cinemax seems to have fully embraced. But at the very least HBO Go seems like kind of a must have. It's also weird that there's no PS3 app for it, but that may be because of some kind of HBO/Microsoft deal on the console side of things. I can see stuff like Amazon Instant Video not being on there due to it being a direct competitor with iTunes and all, but yeah...just seems weird to me that HBO and the others aren't there in some form. On a non-ranty/bitchy thing, I messed with it a bit last night, and I really enjoy the user experience so far. It's fast, functional, and really slick. It's also the best quality I've ever seen Hulu look, compared to the Xbox/PS3 apps and the website. I'm really digging it so far.

THE AWESOME GHOST posted:You can download a lot of apps onto an iPad/Phone and airplay over to the ATV. I literally use mine for airplaying and about nothing else. This is a really dumb question, but I haven't messed around with it that much so I'm going to ask anyway: How exactly does Airplay for apps work? Does the app have to support it, and if it does, is it just in a menu somewhere to push it out that way?

If they do apps for it I really hope they get an AirVideo app out fast.

Laserface posted:It's a 5.1 mix playing thru stereo speakers. The dialog should be coming from the center speaker but that's not happening because you don't have one. You can probably tell the atv to play as stereo but I don't have one so can't comment. Nope, not true. The audio track on the home release of Drive is just hosed. Same goes for Captain America and a few other recent releases. The only way I've found to fix this is to watch them on a loving computer with a compressor program (or VLC, as it can do it on it's own) balancing stuff out. It's a really lovely trend in home releases, and needs to be fixed.

Modern Pragmatist posted:HBO Go airplay support is a step in the right direction for sure. We can dream of the day a real app comes along. MAX Go just got this too. So if you were dying to watch softcore porn on your Apple TV, the dream is now a reality.

They don't actually enforce the 6 devices thing anymore. I have that many devices with Netflix on it just in my room right now (Roku, Xbox, PS3, PC, iPad, iPhone) and I have more than them activated and have never had any issues.

So guys I've got a weird problem. I've got home sharing set up, and up until recently it worked perfectly until recently. Now I'll watch a single movie or episode of tv or music video, and then it will stop reading my home sharing, forcing me to have to come restart iTunes on my computer. I'm on a Apple TV 3, PC, and the latest firmware for both the device and latest software for iTunes. Anyone have any idea? I've tried forwarding the ports for both, putting both in the DMZ, and using wired and wireless connections. Nothing seems to fix it.

Joe Don Baker posted:Have you tried setting a static IP for the ATV and PC? The PC already had one, I tried setting one for the ATV and it was a no go. The Aphasian posted:Is it the appleTV plugged into the router or connected wirelessly? If the former, try the latter; I wanted to throw mine out the window until this thread told me they can be finicky when connected via network cable. I know that is still bad software/design/magic, but it worked. Tried this and the other suggestion I saw of setting it so the ATV never sleeps. Neither worked. E: I'm starting to think it's an iTunes or network issue, as it is doing the same thing with my iPhone and iPad as well. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes though and that did nothing, so I'm running out of ideas here.

Acrolos posted:My TV is mounted and I am hiding all cords. Having a power cord running to near the ground along with an HDMI cord running to the tv is not something I want to have, so I was looking for other options. The ATV itself isn't bad, but I have a child that is learning to walk, so the less cords I have around for her to grab at, the better. As you've already got cords going from the tv, why not just attach the Apple TV to the back of your mounted TV, and then zip tie the power cables together? There's no real difference between two tied together cables and one...

Ripping your movies to a media server and streaming them over Plex is not theft.

Thwomp posted:It was my understanding that with HBO Now, the guys at HBO flip the "available" switch on a show/episode as soon as it starts airing on the traditional HBO channel. Go stuff goes up as soon as it starts. At least in Central time. That might be because it goes up when stuff finishes airing in Eastern, though.

sellouts posted:How else does it tie into the apple stuff you have? I'm not trying to be argumentative, I just got rid of my Apple TV specifically because it didn't tie into anything once I got plex (and it updated to be an AirPlay target) I can't speak for him, but for me: 1. I can use my phone or app as a remote, so no need to ever think about that part. 2. I don't use Plex, but I do have all my crap on itunes with home sharing set up. 3. Apple Music stuff.

Question to 4k TV havers: Is your TV really either that close to you or over 60 inches so that you can actually tell the difference between it and 1080, or did you just get drawn in by buzzwords and need to buy a shiny new thing?

sellouts posted:Because it's a compete debacle with far more money behind it than AppleTv, which shows that your point of "and you're Apple and you want to create a seamless Apple experience to establish this new product)" is nonsense. They're capable of being short sighted and bad. Actually Apple Music is cool and good and I've never had a single issue with it. My anecdotal evidence of it being a perfect streaming service is just as valid as the anecdotal evidence of tech bloggers crying about it.

thrawn527 posted:The UI on Apple Music drives me absolutely crazy, especially when they should have just started with the baseline of "be like Spotify" and added features, not made it worse. My free trial ends Oct. 1st, and I just turned off auto renew. I like being able to talk to my phone to load a song in the car, but that's about it. If they started with "be like Spotify" I would hate it because I can't stand how anything on Spotify is set up. I don't interact with my music via playlists, I like lists of artists, then sublists of albums, then sublists of songs within that. I think the UI in Apple Music is perfect for how I use my library.

nate fisher posted:I wasn't a fan of the look of the Spotify app (the Apple Music app is prettier), and it does have some flow issues. That said the Apple Music UI is so bad, that it makes the Spotify app look great. Honestly I can't take anyone seriously that thinks there are no real issues with the Apple Music UI. To be clear I am a person 100% invested in the Apple eco-system, so I am trying my best to forgive Apple Music for it's shortcomings. I am still debating dropping it and going back with Spotify (better library, app UI better, Ps4 streaming), or staying with Apple Music (cheaper family plans, Apple TV integration, 'for you' playlist are freaking amazing). Still seeing today that The Guest Soundtrack has been removed, and its still available on Spotify makes me sad. One of the main reasons I quit getting Spotify besides hating the UI was the fact that they didn't have a ton of music I liked and wanted on it. Apple Music also doesn't have everything, but they solve that problem by letting you upload your own music. It's not perfect, but I personally don't care if they removed The Guest soundtrack because I've had The Guest soundtrack in my library since the movie came out and I bought it, so it's still up there in the cloud regardless of whether they have it up for streaming. I also haven't been really effected by the UI stuff most people complain about because I'm not poking around with playlist stuff, or going to any tab other than "My Music" and then just playing music. I see how I might be a fringe case here though, but I'm also proof that not every single person is frothing at the mouth about the UI issues I'm sure it does probably have, because they don't effect every single person.
