I'm pretty sure people still only say that when they're calling someone they don't know personally, as an introduction. i think this is kinda dependent on whether or not you grew up with caller id. most of us did so we just know who's calling before we answer, but my grandparents didn't have it so they always say "hi ulysses this is your grandpa/grandma!" when they call me
