Do you like roll-ups? Do you like concussions? How about 45 second matches? Then American Women's Wrestling is for you! There's not a whole lot to talk about right now. The current state of the big-two's women's divisions are in poor shape. So here, have some pictures: WWE Divas iMPACT Wrestling Knockouts However, the Independent scene is much more exciting, treating these ladies as athletes, legitimate competitors, and real people and not characterless gimmicks. The American and Canadian US Indy scene for women is booming, and there are a lot of future legends of the division in addition to some promising news ones. Current big names on the scene include Sara Del Rey, The Canadian Ninjas, Cheerleader Melissa, and new-comers Athena and Saturyne. There are a couple of big-name promotions worth checking out: SHIMMER Women's Athletes: The biggest name in the US for female competitors to showcase their legitimate talents. CHIKARA Pro: While not neccisarily a women's promotion, they don't have a "Division" of women wrestlers either, and prefer to treat them as equal as their male competitors. Last year, CHIKARA put on a trio of shows called "Joshimania" which showcased talents of yesteryear, the stars of today, and a few to look out for in the future. These can be bought from Smart Mark Video. (Night 3 is considered the best night to buy) Pro Wrestling EVE: A UK promotion featuring the best of the best in Europe. Former alumni Brittani Knight was signed to FCW Wrestling recently. AIW Absolute Intense Wrestling is worth mentioning for their yearly shows called the "Girls Night Out" featuring nearly exclusive female talent. Joshi, is a brand of wrestling in Japan featuring well, women. A few years ago, a new Joshi boom hit Japan and a lot of older legends came out of retirement to face a new wave of graplers which says a lot about the creme of the crop. There are many different styles of Joshi, from the stiff, hard-hitting style of the 90's, the shoot-style fighting of girls like Kana, and a more Diva-like approach. Those brutal moves like the Gringo Killa and Burning Hammer? Women innovated those. They do not like your necks. If you're looking to get into an all-around approach to Joshi, watch Joshimania from CHIKARA, or the Sendai Girls FLASH Tournament (Available in full on YT) Wrestling New Classic: The successor to Tajiri's SMASH, it's still in its early stages right now with only one show as of writing, but it houses some of the biggest names in the new wave of Joshi. Kana (One-Third of the founders), Mio Shirai, Makoto, and Syuri are all here and going off their matches from SMASH it should be one of the best promotions to watch. Ice Ribbon: A school started by Emi Sakura several years ago, it started out as an after-school program for girls as an alternative to other clubs. It's grown, and now features some of the bigger names in the new-wave of Joshi. Hikaru Shida is their ace, and they've got an impressive roster featuring Tsukasa Fujimoto and Riho (At 16, she is an 8 year veteran!). Emi Sakura has since left the promotion, to start a new one in Thailand. STARDOM: Features some impressive high-speed, high-flying talent as well as other styles common in Joshi. Io Shirai, Natsuki*Taiyo, and Yoshiko are from this promotion. SENDAI GIRLS: Founded in 2005 by Meiko Satomura, another school like ICE Ribbon for younger girls and former models. DASH Chisako (Who dresses and acts like Jeff Hardy), her sister Sendai Sachiko, and Misaki Ohata make their homes here. Some more in-depth resources, featuring results and interviews! Divas of Destruction Diva-Dirt Dirty Dirt Sheets Ring Belles Please do not bring in the shitposting and drama from the last topic. Please help me branch out some of these descriptions for those looking to get into this style of wrestling. I admit that I don't really keep up with too many of these promotions and I know there are others with more expertise. Dramatic DDT Blog posted:The day some people thought they would never see has finally come. Cherry, the resident female wrestler on the Union roster who has always claimed to be very young has revealed her true age. Cherry lost the Age Contra Makeup match to Emi Sakura, who was wrestling on behalf of an injured Mio Shirai. Cherry was defeated with one of her own signature moves as well as from some interference from Mio. Defeated, Cherry said she was born on 14th May, 1974 which makes her 37 years old going on 38. Cherry told the audience she debuted at 30 years old and did so because it was her dream to become a wrestler, no matter how old she was. Cherry’s passport was flashed onto the giant screen behind her to serve as confirmation while a ten bell salute took place in the background. I use to say that Kana was a vampire for looking so young at her age, but Cherry, who's been claiming to be between 18 and 21 for the past seven years actually looks that young. The relevance of Cherry's age is pretty big for her, since it's been her gimmick since she's started. She's known for doing spots where people announce their age and always saying "I'm the youngest!" and although I would have thought she was in her late 20's, I never expected she would be so close to 40. For comparison, she's a year older than Trish Stratus.

Scottish wrestler Nikki Storm (who won the Queen of the Ring tournament at Pro Wrestling EVE's iPPV earlier this year) has just written a blog over at Ringbelles on being a female wrestler on the independent scene. I don't how relevant her experiences with regards to other promotions, but it's definitely worth a read http://ringbellesonline.com/2012/05/04/blog-nikki-storm-on-being-a-woman-in-wrestling/ quote:Don’t be afraid to punch a guy if he is bothering you, don’t trust anyone in wrestling easily and make people earn your trust. Furthermore, realise that you can’t change the way the business works overnight but you can take tiny steps in the right direction.

I only about Cherry because of her gimmick, but I absolutely love that they used a ten-bell salute during that.

AIW Girls Night Out 6 will be out on SMV's site very soon and is well worth the download/buy as it has a few great matches including A Hailey Hatred/Jenny Rose 20 minute "Joshi" match. Also, the main even is a "Fans Bring The Weapons" match between Allysin Kay and Mia Yim for the vacant AIW Women's title (Mickie Knuckles, the previous champ had to vacate the title after getting pregnant). There is also a death match, a comedy match, and a few other good pure wrestling matches worth watching. Overall a really fun show worth giving a look.

So, if anyone wants to see Paige before she was in WWE/FCW, here is a new video from SHIMMER Volume 43/44 that Dave Prazak just posted. Whats funny is at the most recent SHIMMER tapings, Saraya won the SHIMMER title. She is crazy. And Evil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghAQMY5eOgM quote:The mother & daughter team of Sweet Saraya & Britani Knight made their way to SHIMMER in early 2011 as a tag team. Over time, Saraya lost confidence in her daughter and began to verbally abuse her on the microphone in front of the fans. Finally, on Volume 43, Britani had enough of the abuse and fought back. It culminated in a No Disqualification match between them on SHIMMER Volume 44, just before Britani signed her WWE contract. Video of the match where "Forever 18" Cherry reveals her age. The 10 bell salute is amazing. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqm3m3_02-cherry-vs-emi-sakura-union-05-04-12_sport?start=707 Background info for those wondering: quote:Back in February, Cherry claimed had a big announcement to make, and it was that she wa moving the host site to her blog. To be fair, she’s “Forever 18″, and that’s a big deal for a teenager. However, Mio Shirai came out, saying that she expected that the announcement was going to be that Cherry was going to finally reveal her age – one of the best kept secrets in wrestling. She then challenged Cherry to a match at the March 18 show, where if Shirai won, Cherry would have to tell everyone how old she really is. Cherry ended up winning that contest, making sure her secret remained so.

Bocc Kob posted:Is that Yoneyama at ringside wearing belt armor? Her and Emi Sakura are the JWP/Daily Sports tag champions (two seperate tag belts that were unified basically right after the Daily Sports belts were made) so she's holding/wearing all of their belts. This is AFTER she lost a 30 second match to Emi that would have her be shipped off to Emi's Bangkok Girls Pro Wrestling promotion that she just recently started up in Thailand and after being treated like a jobber since unretiring in the middle of her ceremony. Kind of wish the match they won it in (Yoneyama/Emi vs. Command Bolshoi/Rabbit Miyu) was at Korakuen and not at Itabashi so there'd be a chance of actually seeing it since that sounds like a potentially good match. As a niche, it was already pretty hard to get sometimes, but this is kind of dumb. I wish more companies would follow IR's idea of putting shows on livestream service. Even though it's just 19 O'Clock wrestling, that's still a weekly show that's super easy for foreigners to watch and I appreciate that.

So at the most recent Reina show, Yumiko Hotta beat La Commandante in a hair vs. hair street fight... then promptly announced she was leaving the promotion and Reina's dissolved. Supposedly they're going to be having an announcement about what Reina's future is going to be but they've stripped Mima Shimoda and Zeuxis of the tag belts and cancelled their show on the 27th so either they're done or going away for a bit for a retooling. Hotta apparently said on her blog that she left because she wants more of a focus on hard hitting wrestling while Reina's president wants to emphasize a lucha style and looks. I guess spending a bunch of money to bring in gaijin from North America, buy dorms in Chiba for your wrestlers and buy Chiba Blue Field from K-Dojo when you pretty much can't draw for poo poo isn't a good idea after all.

"emphasize a lucha style and looks." in the Joshi world more or less means "Emphasis on the WWE Diva style" Admittedly, they do it better than the WWE themselves though, but a lot of that style is just really flashy roll-ups.

Pretty much. Granted I don't know why anyone would think Yumiko Hotta would be a draw in 2012 though... STARDOM's basically the one company doing it right so far and that goes to the strength of Nanae as a trainer (and probably Natsuki*Taiyo and Miho Wakizawa too if they're involved in the training) so that you have pretty girls who actually show some promise at being competent inbetween the ropes.
