What the gently caress? There's going to be a whole movie of just the grandpa segments from Jackass? Those were funny in the Jackass movies because they weren't any longer than a minute or two, and they were surrounded by all different kinds of segments. I'm pretty sure that a whole movie of just those will get old very fast.

Okay, so the trailer for Bad Grandpa played before I saw Elysium tonight, and I'll admit, I chuckled at it a few times :shobon:

It seems like anybody who thought about it too hard didn't enjoy it, but I really liked it. Saw it in IMAX and visually it was one of the most interesting and beautiful movies I've seen all year. The fight scenes are a lot of fun, especially later on. Sharlto Copley essentially plays a Metal Gear Solid character and it's hilariously awesome. Matt Damon is a good fit for the lead and turns in a solid performance. There's loads of atmosphere to be found in the movie. It almost reminded me of movies like Soylent Green at times. It's a nice, short little self-contained sci-fi flick without much filler, which is exactly what I wanted out of it.

Some trailers amplify your already sizable appetite for a movie. Others catch you off guard by letting you know a filmmaker or star you like has something new coming out that you didn't previously know about.

Still others just hit you from way out in left field. You never heard of this, you never heard of anybody involved with this, you don't even normally seek out this kind of movie (in this case, documentary), but you watch the trailer and you want it YESTERDAY.

Guess which one this is.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. I just don't think this looks like Robocop and it doesn't seem like it'll come close to being as good as the original.

Even if it turns out alright, I still don't get the impression from that trailer that it's going to be a proper Robocop remake/reboot/reimagining/whatever the gently caress you want to call it.

The Total Recall remake was alright...and nothing more. It definitely wasn't as good as the original, and it wasn't even the kind of movie that had a bunch of cool moments that I still think about and discuss with friends and such. This trailer gives me that same kind of vibe. And if you're gonna remake a classic movie full of heart and make it something that looks just alright, well why even do it at all?

It's still a year out, though. Maybe the next trailer for it will look more interesting.

The pattern I'm seeing is "This trailer is bad because it isn't 80's Robocop."
But like dundun said, a big reason the original worked so well is because it had so much of the 80s in it.

Yeah, a franchise that was awesome in the 80s and is still awesome today can be transplanted into the modern day, but that doesn't mean it should, especially when a big reason it's so awesome is because it's so heavily tied to the time period in which it was released. From what that trailer showed, it explores some of the same concepts as the original (albeit in different ways for some of them). But....I mean, come on, it's PG-13 for gently caress's sake. If you take the 80s satire out of the movie, at least leave in the ultraviolence for it to fall back on. With it being rated PG-13, even that won't be there.

What? I think you're letting nostalgia come in and cloud the issue up too much. When Robocop came out no one loved it because it "has so much of the 80s in it" because it was the 80s at the current time. I think if you can't break out of this mindset you are probably doomed to not like anything in the new one.
I didn't even see the original for the first time until like 2007 or 2008. (Since then I've watched both the first and second movie at least 10 times each.) That doesn't change the fact that it has a metric fuckton of 80s charm to it. And it's not that I don't like any movies made or set in the present day, because I find new ones to like all the time. I just don't think Robocop is going to benefit from being modernized in any way.

I think not wanting a remake of a classic movie that still holds up extremely well to this day is a valid opinion :shobon: Especially when the trailer for said remake doesn't inspire much confidence that it'll be as much of an achievement as the original.

It is a valid opinion, but it is not an opinion that can be credibly held against the movie itself. You're saying "This movie is going to be bad because it shouldn't exist." Think about that for a second.
But what if I think it shouldn't exist and the trailer makes it look bad? It's that one-two punch that's what's really disheartening.

I don't think Robocop should be remade, but if a remake were to come out that actually looked like it would be above average and watchable, I'd be totally on board with it. But I don't get that vibe at all from this trailer.

If you already think it shouldn't exist then it was never going to look good to you, short of Abbie Cornish climbing out of the screen to suck your dick -- even then you'd be talking 50/50 odds. Look, I think the trailer makes certain key missteps (YOUR SON NEEDS YOU) and I don't mean to be such a staunch defender of it, but let's get real here. If you're seriously closed off to the very idea of a Robocop remake you've got no business giving it any attention aside from an initial "Ugh, not seeing that."
That's not necessarily true. If it looked like it retained the spirit of the original (satire/gore/body horror/not necessarily adept but still effective acting performances, etc.), I'd actually be excited to see it, even if I didn't think it was going to be as great as the original. But based on this trailer, it doesn't look like that stuff is intact, or at least as intact as it should be (all of you who are saying it is...I don't even know where you're getting that idea), so I'm not excited for it. I'll still see it on the off chance that the themes of the original are in there, don't get me wrong. But that trailer hasn't given me a reason to be excited about it.
