I've been waiting years for this. Hell, in the amount of time I've been waiting I probably could have learned Japanese and imported my own copy.

Still-- not quite yet to the Tenra Bansho Kickstarter: http://www.tenra-rpg.com/blog/?p=246

It looks like it's likely starting around this coming monday, with the entry level donation for the two-book set at $55.

That's very reasonable for a two book set, especially if there's color printing involved. He'll be getting my money.

Well poo poo I was too late for the tier I really wanted, oh well, still in it for a hardcover set at 55 bucks. He's getting close to covering the cost of the print run out of KS funds, which is awesome.

Hey Ewen when can we expect that GSS kickstarter now that TB0 was ridiculously successful?

It's pretty much a shoe in for my weekly game because the themes involved sound perfect for the kind of one shot storygames I like to run these days.

Finished skimming the preview docs and I can't get over how much I love this. Quick question: Is there any limit on mixing-and-matching specialist archetypes? Is there any reason I can't have a taoist sorcerer who's a kugutsu and also an armour-riding ninja, full of bugs?

You can't have more 107 Karma at chargen. Other than that, I don't think you can kugutsu with ninja or annelidist.

Oh also, totally running games of this soon, maybe next week after I've had a chance to pick over the rules some more.

I'll throw in at 25 now and we'll see in a few weeks.

I'm friends with the editor and we chat all the time over IM, and leading up to this Kickstarter he told me he was a little nervous because Channel A had a bit of a long, drawn-out funding process. I just sent him a message saying "You guys are probably going to need a few more stretch goals handy."

Yeah they've already hit the mystery goals and sold at least 300 print copies of their original projected 500 run. Not bad for the first few hours.

Man, now I wish I had sprung for the hardcover upgrade. I'm not too worried about durability, since I mostly play games off PDF these days (and the lite PDFs are perfect for that, by the way), but having those glossy hardcovers on my shelf would be kick rear end.

Ewen Cluney posted:

The closest equivalent of the indie RPG scene of the west in Japan is the doujinshi TRPG scene there. Like with other kinds of doujinshi there's a lot of emphasis on stuff based off of anime and such (though there are also some interesting original works), and stuff tends to be printed in limited quantities and sold at events (Comiket and its smaller relatives) and not so much in normal retail venues, much less places that ship internationally. The doujin scene has a tradition of people forming "circles," small groups that work together to make stuff, and from what I've seen that's very much true of TRPG doujins.

A lot of the stuff that Kamiya & co. are doing is aimed at encouraging doujin TRPG creators to be a bit more ambitious. In addition to the aforementioned storefront (which I'm hoping will do well, considering it'd mean those games would be a lot easier to get here), they've been putting on seminars on TRPG publishing, covering desktop publishing and design and so forth, which is all kinds of awesome.

Go for it! I've been looking forward to seeing what people do with the game for a while, plus for us it's basically free advertising anyway.

I did not realize how much doujin culture had influenced TRPGs.

So yeah, I went ahead and went for it.

The Shikidan cannon is a special case, each shot costs 3 Karma, so it's significantly more expensive than your average soulgem firearm per shot, although like one, you can carry extra ammo and reload it between shots.

Double Cross is just plain out of stock, that's why it's not taking orders on Amazon (congratulations on selling out the first print run, by the way).

So unfortunately you (and I, sadly, I didn't buy a copy either) will have to wait until the second print run is ready.

The blame lies not with Kickstarter, but with the United States Postal Service, who is pretty much the only international carrier from the US to other countries these days. Plus, since you can only get discounts for international by shipping in bulk freight containers, and that requires a distribution network on the receiving end.. Well, long story shorter a bunch of people ended up actually losing a lot of money on international shipping this year on stuff that got pledged last year because of rate hikes.

Okay, this is hilarious, the advanced rulebook has special syndrome only items, and one of them is a straight up Death Note, although it doesn't actually kill your target, just make them easier to kill.

Awesome, they finally renamed the game so I can show it to friends without them backing away slowly.

Which is 100% the reason they renamed it, honestly. It's a decent rules light game held down by an unfortunate name. Unlike Maid, which is a decent rules light game held down by the creator being extra pervy when he wrote it.

So I've been toying around with some house rules for a Gust style RPG in Tenra, and I've been posting the occasional update about it to G+ but I know not everyone follows that (or me) so I'm posting a link here as well for comments. Here's a Google doc. Right now it's just some basic item creation rules but I'm planning on adding rules for reyvateil style song magic and atelier style skills consumable items.

Tenra is a great game but the way it's set up really doesn't work for long term play. You can rewrite that, but it's a good chunk of work getting the new balance correct. Demimonde the Persona-inspired supplement which still isn't out yet promises to be both simpler to set up and more suited to long term play. We'll see though.

I should really check in here more often, but my editor finally got me the revised manuscript and I sent Mononoke Koyake off to Clay Gardner for layout. In theory he's going to start on it today, so it'll be going out to GSS backers basically whenever the turnaround for a 50-or-so-page book is done, hopefully within a week or so. Then the GSS Kickstarter will finally be done and we can move onto other projects.

This is the best news I've had all week!

That's a problem in general dealing with licensing from Japan, apparently. Producers can be uncooperative.
