Yeah, it's homoerotic right in the text. No question about it. Good point about the nuclear family too.

The whole loving film is amazing and my 7 year old is dying to watch but we live at the beach and he's too young. I can't wait til he's 10 and we have scary JAWS movie night. I consider it a rite of passage.

Yeah. I was 6 when we saw that at the drive-in just a couple of miles from the beach, and only a couple of hours sailing from where the movie supposedly took place. Wait.

And that reminds me of a movie that came out a year later, don't let your kid watch The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea. NMS the whole way through. Unless you're a major Mishima fan. In which case, follow your leader.

And amazingly enough the recent Punisher series (including his bits in S2 of Daredevil) are really good and contain actual nuance. S1 ends with Frank going to a support group for veterans with PTSD. Highly recommended, it's probably the best of the Marvel/Netflix series so far.

One movie I never watched was AI because it was supposed to be more of a Kubrick movie and one gets the feeling that Spielberg would have made a lot of changes and you'd be left with "this movie could have been so much better".

AI makes me incredibly angry. It's obvious where Spielberg made changes for the worse.

Okay, I’m seconding this motion. It really is a delightful movie and the best Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan pairing. I still feel bad about Dagmar and the crew.

I need to re-watch that. I saw it once in the theater and haven't gone back to it since. I loved it the one time, time to track it down on streaming services (not on Netflix or Prime, dang).

Aliens!

The scene where they're moving into the colony complex, when they find the facehuggers in the tanks. Hicks calls for the lieutenant, he doesn't respond. He says "Gorman!" and the guy turns around.

He clearly hasn't been an LT for a long time.

That whole sequence from "I'm coming in" to "love at first sight" is gold. Burke just wants to get out of the rain. Weaver is playing Ripley as PTSD as gently caress. As they're moving through Medical, Burke is following behind Gorman and his whole body language is "go that way fuckhead". Cameron wrote a whole bunch of real people into cinematic existence with very few lines and some great directing.

The Tony Jaa film Tom Yum Goong (The Protector) had a four minute fight shot in one continuous take on a steadicam which had a tiny bit of CGI (a window breaking) and no wire work. They had to do 5 takes to get it right but because they had to rebuild so many physical elements and stunt props each time it took them a whole month to shoot it.

That looks video gamey in the best possible way. As in, you'll be firing up an emulator in a virtual machine thirty years after release just to experience it again.

Hiding out above the door by doing the splits reminds me of one of my favorite potentially career-ending stunts.

But I still feel that Battleships and Rampage are the last IPs you would buy to help sell a movie. Which just goes to show I have no future in Hollywood - Battleship "flopped" and only made $80m worldwide, and Rampage made a cool $300m. I think they both would have done the same without the IP, but obviously I can't prove that.

I think the difference is that The Rock starred in Rampage, not that Rampage was the better IP for a movie adaption.

Its fantastic. Go watch the first Phantom Menace fight again with Obiwan and Maul and then watch the Rebels fight. Obiwan goes into the same stance from Phantom and Maul subtly acknowledges/recognizes it (and thinks he's going to take advantage of it) but Obiwan just does it to bait Maul and kills him with a totally unexpected counterblow. Its like poetry.

It's very well broken down by the actor who plays Maul, he's super into it.

And pay attention to the musical cues, the soundtrack is doing some very heavy lifting in this scene.

You've clearly not seen the trailers for Mulan. Pretty serious departure from the original, and not in a way that looks like an improvement. They look like instead they're trying to merge Hidden Dragon with Mulan plus adding a big chunk of magic that wasnt necessary.

It looks like it's got some wushu elements, like the bandits leaping from their horses and running up the castle wall. I'm down for some old school, wire-fu on a Disney budget.

Through a combination of raw exposure, and the fact that one of the main characters is a hopeless lubber who regularly has the finer points of sailing re-explained to him, you do begin to understand the gist of what's going on with the rigging at any given time.

This is a key point, if nobody is explaining something to the doctor, the reader doesn't need to know either.

And if you'd like to try it yourself, have a square-rig sailing sim:

Airlines were looking for an excuse to drop them because the profit margins weren't as high

Fun fact about Concorde fares: When the margins were really tight, they polled some passengers about how much they thought a ticket cost. Remember, if you were flying on the Concorde, your assistant actually booked the flight for you. When the survey responses all came in at much higher than the actual price they raised the fare to reflect that. Didn't help enough to keep them going after the accident, no.

Hand to hand combat is exceptional, great control and fantastic finishing moves. And when driving you get a harpoon gun to yank parts off cars! Or parts off people. Highly recommended.
