^^ oh neat. I was just recently thinking about tracking down a copy because it sounds like a neat game. It's like Bladestorm right?

Yeah that was it. I'd read that unlocking additional characters in Shosei mode was down to luck or something and wanted to start with someone I liked.

What, Chi Bi? Or do you mean the side stage you go to so that you can un-curse Sun Ce? Don't remember having any trouble finding the boss on that stage. Here's a video of it though. The same guy has uploaded videos with instructions for hitting the IF flags in every other stage too. Very helpful.

Seeing as how DW7 is the current recommendation in the OP, I see GameStop has it for the 360 new for $25. Worth the price? Is any of the DLC worth it?

If you have a PS3 I'd recommend getting that version, just in case you like DW7 enough to want the PS3-exclusive Xtreme Legends expansion later. If not, it's still a great game on 360 and that's not a bad price for it.

DW8 is ridiculously low on things you can spend money on. I've maxed out my supply, at 999,999 gold. I don't think I've ever maxed out money in a game before, other than Zelda of course.

It's ridiculous. I maxed out my money after completing one story mode and have been sitting on it ever since. I guess the best use for it is buying levels in Shosei Mode but I haven't actually played that mode enough to unlock that option yet. :(

You can just buy levels?

Orochi 3 style yeah. I mean, that's what I've read. Be nice considering that you have to get a character to level 50 to unlock their weapon skill and you don't pick up nearly as much exp in Shosei mode.

So hey, some advice for everyone if/when DW8 comes out in English: don't put off Commander Mode or whatever they end up calling it until after you finish the story. Mix it in because it eventually provides decent sinks for money and a use for the massive numbers of weapons you'll be picking up.

Question about DW8. Is there any bullshit system where you're limited in how many attacks you can perform fresh out of the gate? Like, how in DW7, you have to spend skill points to unlock the fifth and sixth normal and charge attacks? I hate crap like that.

It's tied to character level this time, but the requirements are pretty low. Seemed like from the third stage of any kingdom's story mode on everyone available would be at a level that let them use all of their charge attacks. You finish unlocking things for a character at level 26 with their last musou and proficiency star.

Oh yeah also, in DW8, when you start using a character that you haven't used before in a story mission other than the first, it automatically and permanently adjusts their level upwards so its appropriate for that stage. So like, you've ignored Liu Bei through almost all of the Shu storyline, and then use him for the last stage, he'll suddenly jump from level 1 to level 30.

Though Liu Bei's weapon situation may be pretty dire since you won't find a character's EX weapon in shops until you've played as them once. :argh:

e: I used Xiahou Dun in the first stage of Wei and then once more in the last stage, expecting that I'd be able to buy some nice three dot weapons for him before the stage began. Only to discover that there's no merchant before Wei's last stage. :(

So what makes 8 better than 7 to those who have played it?

Decloning all of the characters is the biggest thing to me. There's a unique EX weapon with a unique moveset for every single character, and the weapon switching thing from 7 returns so now you have the best of both worlds. Every character has like four musou attacks too. Being able to automatically mount your horse by holding L2 is huge. You can select from among a handful of characters for every stage in story mode so you're not just playing Sun Quan over and over again. I really like the way every kingdom's story mode has been split into two routes, one historical and one very not. Also co-op is back for story mode.

Most of the new characters are pretty cool too

Well given how dismally the Koei games sell it's likely a combination of the two depending on your definition of failure. Honestly they seem perfectly aware of how much of a niche product it is and probably found that there's no way they are going to make money on a Sengoku Basara title outside of Japan.

How much that has to do with what they spend on localization and promotion is something I'd leave up to someone who actually has that information.

Really I wish I had continued to take Japanese lessons after highschool so I could play these games, which makes me feel like the biggest god drat nerd ever.

Koei games can't be doing that poorly because they sure do keep making and putting them out in English.
