So just finished Priests of Mars and I have to say overall it was pretty good and a nice distraction from the usual bolter porn nonsense.

However, the book has one of the most abrupt endings ever. Worse than some of Abnett's endings. They spend the entire book talking about this anomaly and the expedition to it but when they finally pass through it, the book literally just ends. I enjoyed it up until I looked at my kindle and realized he wrapped up the entire book in the last 5%.

I think general fluff discussion is fine here, since the traditional games thread mostly limits itself to the modelling and gaming aspect.

I agree, I really don't have any interest in reading about the modeling/tabletop aspects of 40k.

Not every question/discussion is going to be about someone's inane theories.

Yeah, I wonder if it's supposed to be a duology or trilogy. So many threads were left dangling, especially the forged Rogue Trader writ.

I really flipped my poo poo at the end of that book. I couldn't agree more about how it felt like the ebook was incomplete and they left out a good third of the ending.

I was kind of sad to see Harlon Nayl with Eisenhorn instead of Ravenor.

To anyone with an Ebook copy of Angel Exterminatus: is your copy full of formatting errors? I'm only a few pages in and I'm seeing all sorts of garbled junk.

Everything was formatted fine on the .mobi version; I'm using a Kindle Fire.

Anyone know if that Eisenhorn vs Ravenor short story Perihelion is worth the purchase?

ADB just posted on his blog that Betrayer comes out on December 14th in ebook and December 15th in hardback. So pumped to read about the World Eaters and more Word Bearer fanaticism.

So I am about halfway through Betrayer, and I have to say, ADB has once again blown my mind.

The whole morality conflict between Angron and the Emperor is actually pretty awesome to me. The whole concept of Angron admitting the bare truth about how although the Emperor has altruistic motives, he is still a "conquering" hypocrite is amazing. Like Angron says, how noble can someone be when some planets, despite offering peaceful intentions, are ultimately obliterated because they don't want to conform to the Imperium. I always thought of Angron as all about butchering, but once again ADB adds an element of sympathy you have a hard time disagreeing with. The whole basis of the HH seems to be a bunch of sons disappointed in their father and somehow ADB really makes this possible.

As a side note, all the Magnus as 3rd observer stuff makes me sad considering the Thousand Sons are my favorite legion. I only wish Magnus realized his mistake and forgave his father for misunderstanding his own intentions.

Also the fall of Argel Tal is such a giant frownie face. He is someone who could have been noble, despite the machinations of his primarch. And it really saddens me that the death of Cyrene seems to be the main fuel behind his despair.

EDIT: Grammar

If you really want good fiction about the Word Bearers I'd definitely skip the omnibus and read The First Heretic, Know No Fear, and The Betrayer. All of these are based in the HH, but are written by two of BL's best authors and really give you an inside look into their corruption and personal beliefs.

Abnett having abrupt, terrible endings is like a baby pooping its diaper. Sure it's an awful-smelling mess, but it's strangely adorable and dealing with it time and time again endears him to you for some reason.

Yea but you eventually get sick of it/the kids become potty trained.

Abnett hasn't shown that level of progression; I still think he's way above most BL writers, but the abrupt endings are becoming annoying.

EDIT: I don't mean to bash Abnett but I'm always curious if it is deadlines/word count that is causing him to wrap up things so quickly or this really is the way he writes.

How come nobody ever writes about the White Scars? I don't think the Khan has even appeared in the Horus Heresy series.

I wish they did! As well as Dark Angels stuff that doesn't suck. They did come out with one of those limited prints about the Scars but I never threw down the money for it.

I always thought the short story Fall of Malvolion by Abnett with the IG and Tyranids was pretty sweet. I just wish it would've been a full novel.

A little late to the discussion but I always liked to think(I'm a little biased since I love the DA) the Lion wasn't necessarily waiting to see who the victor would be so much as he was trying to figure out who was in the "right". The Betrayer does a great job with Angron(with his criticisms of the Emperor) showing that the Imperium had no qualms about committing genocide or causing the extinction of countless Xenos races simply because they didn't submit(peaceful or not) or weren't human. If the whole chapter is losely based on the idea of chivalry, the idea that he was waiting to see who wins seems to be pretty dishonorable and in conflict with what is considered "knightly" values.

Romantic chivalry and actual historical chivalry are very different. The latter is much more pragmatic and mean.

I'm enjoying the whole battle of Calth stuff but holy poo poo is GW dragging it out. They could be releasing tons of poo poo about the Whire Scars' fight to return to Terra or what the gently caress is going on with the Dark Angels but nope, "let's get back to the Battle of Calth cause Chaos and poo poo."
