I have a 2004 Nomar Garciaparra who would be a huge upgrade to you. Unfortunately, he's my backup SS (and 3B) and I'm screwed if something happens to my starter. However, I only need a backup, not a full time replacement, so I'm happy to take from your hands young Chipper Jones who's cooling off in your minors, Dazzy Vance and Steve Bedroisian, both of whom aren't even on the roster.

You get a proven, versatile quantity, for the price of a bunch of pieces you will likely never use. It's effectively free for you!

Listening to Marauder will probably screw me over at some point, but I'm willing to go with his "'04 Nomar can't play short" thesis. Rejected.

Savouring this, as it may be the only update I'm in first/above .500/with hope of survival. Still, there are changes to be made.

Bring up Chipper, replacing Pendleton.

New line-up:

2B Ray Durham
CF Al Oliver
3B Home Run Baker
1B Frank Thomas
LF David Justice (against RHP)/Oscar Gamble (against LHP)
RF Oscar Gamble (against RHP)/Magglio Ordóñez (against LHP)
SS Roger Peckinpaugh
C Jim Sundberg
<pitcher>

If the DHs stay: Thomas to DH, McGriff to 1B batting fifth.

Pitching stays as is, and will continue to do so until Greg Maddux's arm falls off.

As well as Peckinpaugh has started, I don't foresee it being sustainable, so I'm still looking for an SS, but it's not quite the priority it was.

Edit: Roster post updated here.

The Peckinpaugh bubble has predictably burst. In a big way. But it's alright, not like he's the only viable shortstop on my roster or anything...

: Bwahaha! I'm untouchable!

Sod off, Roger. Anyway, to business. Chipper Jones and Steve Avery replace Terry Pendleton and Mark Buehrle on the 25. Avery just takes the fifth slot in the rotation; my pitching is otherwise unchanged. Since the game is telling me Thomas needs a rest, McGriff starts at 1B for the first week of the month only. Gamble isn't doing so hot at the minute, forcing some roster switching, as follows:

2B Ray Durham
CF Al Oliver
3B Home Run Baker (Chipper Jones during the injury)
1B Frank Thomas (Fred McGriff for the first week)
LF David Justice
RF Magglio Ordóñez
C Jim Sundberg (vs RHP)/Javy López (vs LHP)
SS Roger Peckinpaugh
<pitcher>

I'm seriously considering batting the pitcher eighth.

There's no getting around it – I have huge holes at SS, CF and RF. Now ordinarily, I would turn to the dispersal draft for help, but looking up and down the Expansion Cup rosters, it seems SS and CF are pretty universal problems for this round of teams.

This leaves me with three options: 1) Get to the Expansion Cup Finals for the bonus pick (not going to happen, even if I am currently .500 against the Postmodernists); 2) Tank enough that a decent SS/CF is still on the board (a stupid idea, and I'd probably accidentally make my team better without achieving point 1); or 3) Trade out to someone who can find better value in the draft than I can, in return for filling one of the above mentioned holes, which is the way I'm currently leaning.

Also, Cthulhu, you're completely right, so have the pitcher bat eighth in both lineups.

I don't know... I know Mogul's ratings should be taken with a dollop of salt, but the fact that both Joosts are rated lower than Peckinpaugh (whose awfulness is the biggest personality trait my team has) doesn't inspire confidence that one of them would be worth a first-round pick. I'm not saying no yet, just that I need more convincing.

Eddie Joost's peak, from 1947 to 1952: .248/.386/.407, a .793 OPS. He drew nearly as many walks during those six years as Peckinpaugh drew during his entire 17-year career.

Peckinpaugh's peak, from 1916 to 1921: .268/.338/.358, a .696 OPS.

Joost's best year was 1949, when he drew 149 walks and hit 23 home runs for an OPS of .883. Peckinpaugh's best two years combined were 1917 and 1919, when he hit a total of 7 home runs and drew a total of 123 walks.

Quite simply, Joost is a more valuable offensive player in every area than Peckinpaugh.

As for defense, Peckinpaugh was a great defensive player. But the very first words of Joost's bio on wikipedia are "An outstanding defensive player." Defense is a wash.

Given their similar defense and Joost's dramatically better offense, Joost should be considered a definite upgrade over Peckinpaugh, and acquiring him is a no-brainer if you can get him at a reasonable price. Whether he's worth a 1st rounder or not is another issue that I'll leave for you to decide for yourself, but if you need a shortstop, Joost is a quality option.

...actually, you know what? I can't do this. My last 1st round Dispersal pick ended up being Hank Aaron in his prime, and I wasn't even picking all that high. A 1st round Dispersal pick is loving valuable, and you shouldn't spend it carelessly. I'm still willing to trade you my '48 Joost, and he's still definitely an upgrade for you, but I don't want to blatantly rip you off without giving you some kind of warning.

Oh, I know Joost is an upgrade on Peckinpaugh, it was the "worth a first rounder" I was wavering on. Which you're right, he probably isn't.

Anyway, one roster move: Flip Ordóñez and Yount in both lineups. Also, by my reckoning, Maddux will be pitching the very last game of the season. If by then the division has been decided (either in favour of myself or the Gumshoes), Dazzy Vance will take that start, with Maddux going to the bullpen.

Voting for 6 divisions. Bigger divisions just seem more competitive somehow.

My roster is on the previous page.

What would you want for Burgess?

A could use a third baseman, and I'd also accept a draft pick.

Beyond that, you have a few guys in your feeders I wouldn't mind acquiring:

-'79 Johnny Grubb, because he was a pretty good contact hitter and his name made me laugh when I was a kid
-'79 Dock Ellis, because he threw a no-hitter while high on LSD
-'01 Alan Embree, because I only have one lefty reliever and no injury insurance there
-'01 Paul Konerko, because I could use another bat for my bench
'18 Slim Love, because his name is Slim Love

If you want to package a few of those guys together, I could maybe use them as challenge fodder or something, I guess.

I'll do it for my first Super Draft pick, and I'll toss in Slim Love too because why the hell not.

Accepted. Have Burgess replace López on the 28 and immediately start at catcher, batting seventh in both lineups.

I think this neatly fits into the "oh well" category. Continue as you were, guys.

Yeah, you go Adam Dunn!

Going to give Glavine and Smoltz one or two more weeks to prove they shouldn't be gazumped by Jenkins/Vance/Shawkey in the rotation, although I get the feeling that Vance should probably already be in there. Thinking out loud here, is '93 Smoltz too young to put in the bullpen?

If I had any real hope that my team was any good, this would be the time for me to do something panicky. As I don't, however, all I'll do is follow your advice and swap Smoltz and Vance.

Oh, how I wish Jon Matlack being this fantastic was sustainable. Still nice to see, though. Yount, on the other hand, needs to stop putting up Peckinpaugh-esque numbers, or else I'll have to waste even more depth/risk a challenge to fill in at SS.

I see Burgess needs some rest. Have Sundberg start at catcher for the Unspecifieds series, batting eighth. Upon the conclusion of the series, revert the lineup to its current form. Oh, and knock my pitching through trouble slider down to +3.

Well done Smasher, congratulations!

Bad rotation? Unfazed by the curse of the 90s Braves? Simply want a player with the letter Z in their name? Then I have a like new '93 John Smoltz ready to sell to you for any reasonable offer!

I'm going to reject both offers for Smoltz, if only because trading a starter for another starter doesn't really seem like it will get me very far.

One change to make this week: Swap Yount and Durham in the lineup, since I may as well ride Durham while he's performing above expectations.

Rough week, but that was to be expected against the Bangers and Gumshoes (who I'm now 7-18 against lifetime. Yay for terrible matchups). Still, I'm .500, which I'd be very happy (and surprised!) to stay at for a while.

He'll sulk about it, but Dunn gets replaced by Justice in the right-handed lineup. Justice was really good for me in the EC, not sure why I messed with that really. As for Vance, I'm not massively concerned yet, as a large part of his stats are skewed by two terrible long relief outings. I'm willing to give him more time.

I only have my second rounder due to the Burgess trade with the Landers. My preference is 3B if any of the first three miraculously drop; otherwise SP.

One more thing - have Sundberg be Glavine's personal catcher.

As long as all of my injuries keep occurring in my minors, I'm happy.

I'm very much less happy about my schedule. Unicorns-Bangers-Oranges-Losers back-to-back-to-back-to-back... I hope you enjoy this probable top-3 pick I'm giving you, mrnoun!

: Come on, gingemidget! We don't know I can't play shortstop, right?

I'm going 0-6 next week anyway, so you'd be surprised how close to letting this happen I am.
