I could swear that white car is a late 50s Buick of some sort, but I'm honestly not sure. e: definitely a 1959 Buick. The slanted "angry eyebrows" were new for 1959 and they made them a lot less prominent and brought the headlights further forward for 1960. e2: original filename "59buick-front.jpg" on GIS kastein fucked around with this message at 07:17 on Aug 22, 2012 |

Never thought I'd see an IFS/IRS Jeep concept I actually don't hate on first sight. Body styling isn't really my type, but ground clearance looks great and it appears that it would be pretty drat good in a high speed desert environment if the suspension was tuned properly. e: Just read the placard 40 mile lithium ion plus a DIESEL aux engine? My apologies on mis-identifying the tank/tank killer and when it was used, I don't know Russian and it didn't look like it'd been sitting for that long Russian engineering and repairs are awesome in a "as a shadetree mechanic repairing things in my yard that's exactly how I'd go about fixing a tank in a field" sort of a way.

Now, if you really wanted, you could get an M54 5-ton or M123A1C 10-ton, put a pickup in the back of that, and then put an experimental class airplane or smart car in the back of THAT. I suggest keeping an eye out for bridges and low telephone lines, however.

I dunno, some butthurt failure at life construed it as a threat or something and made his life hell over it. I think that kind of litigious crap is bullshit too, but it's the way life is now and you gotta either be ready to deal with it, or avoid it happening. Me, I'd just make sure there was no way a name/license plate/vehicle description could be connected with the note I left (i.e. no cameras looking that way) and do it anyways. kastein fucked around with this message at 04:33 on Oct 19, 2012 |

It went on his criminal record iirc as an assault, since the retard who couldn't park "felt threatened" by his note about their subpar parking job. I'll have to ask for details next time I run into him.

They're butchering that thing. What kind of idiot tries to randomly, blindly drill new body panel mounting holes without first measuring and marking where the old screw stubs are? Hell, make a small Sharpie line on the bottom cover panel along the centerline of each old fastener, then simply drill between em and wipe the Sharpie off with some isopropyl.

How the hell would you even keep that thing planted? And how does it track straight? It looks like the front and rear axles aren't on the same centerline... That is straight up insanity.

That elco engine swap is one of my favorite videos of theirs. They're all pretty drat good though. I think the furthest from home I've ever worked on my cars was 1000 miles away, in Indiana, in a gravel parking spot in a campground in early March. It snowed while I fabricated myself a custom rear bumper... cooled the welds off a little faster at least. No pics of the actual work in progress, but I brought a drill press, angle grinder, and welder, and built the drat bumper on the spot because I needed a rear tow point to pass tech. If we hadn't had 6" of snow the day I left home I would have built it in my yard but I got unlucky.

A few things - - the 2 door JK is indeed better than a TJ IMO. The 4 door is ridiculously long and low unless lifted and/or significantly larger tires installed. - The picture jonathan posted of the traction bar doesn't seem badly done, except that the angles make it look like it's triangulated below the axle housing instead of above. That's a huge waste of ground clearance. If I'm wrong and it's triangulated above the axle tube, it looks well done to me. - the traction bar murphle posted looks kinda hack. It'll probably work for a long time, but none of it is designed very well. That style truss does almost nothing to strengthen an axle housing (since it's only attached at one point on each side of the diff and is fairly delicate), they're more intended for 3/4 link builds to give the builder a convenient spot to mount the upper link tabs. The welding looks about like mine and it appears the shackle at the frame end is mounted in single shear. None of this is going to result in anything bad unless it's pushed hard but it all could have been avoided with only slight changes to the design. A well executed traction bar is a significant upgrade to a leaf spring suspension - they're commonly used on offroad vehicles, mud boggers (a lot of those are extremely badly put together by people from the shallow end of the gene pool...) and track/drag strip applications. They're generally known as "ladder bars" in the pavement world while offroad types call them traction bars.

It's descended from the inline 4s that were in those wars, I guess, sorta, but it's a 100% civilian motor. I don't believe the 258 or 242/4.0 ever saw combat. IMO they should have gone with the 3.9L V6 (though they stopped producing that at the end of 03.) It's a good strong reliable motor and puts out about the same power/torque as a 4.0 in a shorter, slightly wider package.
