The guitar is playing power chords, right? One thing that might help is if you made it so that not all the notes in each chord started at the same time. That's one thing that stood out to me, is that the onset of all the guitar chords sounded exactly the same. If you were to edit what you have now, turn off the grid-snapping in Ableton, and move each note slightly (as in, a fraction of a 32nd note) to the left or right, it might make it sound more natural. When you strum a guitar, you don't hit all the notes at exactly the same time. Your other options are:
- work with a real guitarist
- use a different virtual instrument that doesn't sound like a distorted guitar, but still has some sort of powerful, distorted sound. You could even try using a distorted organ timbre, like Deep Purple or Uriah Heep.
- find a better guitar synth, but this one might be as good as you'll get. It sounds pretty good aside from the uncanny machine-like precision

Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I'm just laying out drums until something sounds rieht to me while listening to much better artists in the background for motivation. Once I get the drums in, it's a lot easier, but getting the drums in is the hardest part for me.

I'd pull the threshold up a bit from there, turn off the auto gain compensation, and maybe push the ratio down a little bit on the compressor. Also the release should probably be reduced, but I'm not as sure about that. gently caress with it. The EQ should drop the really low frequencies (first slider) by a few dB, and then the other ones which are above 0 should be pulled down so they're a more subtle boost. Also, sometimes it's easier to EQ before compression, sometimes it's easier after. Sometimes I do both.

It's difficult to be really accurate because I doubt either of us are currently listening to this on real monitors.

dude, my honest advice here is that I've released poo poo that is no where near as good as the stuff I have now, but releasing the poo poo you do have means you can get solid critiques and commentary from this thread. I started out on an iPad with a headset mic and now I am not entirely terrible and I attribute that completely to this thread.

if you're really an artist you can't stop doing it and you can't shut up that voice inside you that tells you that you can always further purify and master your art. so just loving release cause real artists ship and realize that there is always another step higher than the one you are on.
