i am making a few real ultra-sleazy instrumentals to put on a cassette tape called gently caress MUSIC

this is heavily inspired by the instrumental poo poo on the love movement

it is supposed to make you think about maybe fuckin some middle-aged white chick on a yacht

It totally needs some linn drum or dmx or something. I got really drunk last night and decided I really wanted to make either a g-funk or synth beat but I was really drunk and couldn't decide and didn't want to walk 10 feet to wear my muzik desk is so I just jerked off instead.

Also if you want to hear some random person rap over something of yours, where do you post? I always see dudes post on random statuses on facebook which just feels awkward. I did see some dudes work something out on one of the Raider Klan pages but I'm not sure if I want to stoop to that level. Maybe I should stoop to that level.

Also I meant like how do I find random people to rap over tracks. I ain't even looking for a famous person.

My coworker wanted to hear my poo poo but he's looking for beats that sound like "Meek Mill or A$AP Rocky" (I'm sure there's like at least 10 dudes making beats for each of those two) and I don't think I'm what he's looking for.

I redid an old song but listening to it again a few days later I really need to change up the drums.

http://soundcloud.com/grungerdude91/preschool-hour-of-the-witch-1

This one is newer but I can't really tell if its working or not. Should I cut the delay on the flute sample? Also how the hell do I let the separate trax breath while also being gritty and thick? I have no idea how to describe what the sound I'm looking for is but that solid brick waveform makes me uncomfortable.

I can vouch for Maschine. I use it for pretty much everything now. Make the whole track in the stand alone software then throw it in Ableton for recording. Its the best of digital and hardware interfaces slapped together. And it finally has time stretch!

Do you use a Mac because the only poo poo I can't get working right is sampling from currently playing output(like iTunes or Spotify or whatever). SoundFlower used to work but that poo poo's broken now, it has some bug on 64 bit OS's that makes it start distorting

How does your workflow go from Maschine -> Ableton? Like what do you do in Ableton that's easier than in Maschine? I've never tried Ableton

For sampling I have to use my cheapo external soundcard. if I'm sampling youtube or spotify or what ever, I'll take a patch cord (1/4" on one end and 1/8" on the other in my case) and connect the monitor/headphone output to one of the inputs. I make sure I have the sample monitoring turned off. Its janky but it works.

I'll put together the beat in the stand alone Maschine program and then save it. Then I'll open up Ableton and load the Maschine VSTi and route the separate Maschine instruments (or whatever they're called I can't remember) into different channels. And then I record and mix it. I do it that way since the workflow for it in Ableton is kind of hosed up. Pressing the "play" button wont do anything, neither will sampling internal audio. So Ableton is just there for recording. I've also been having issues lately with running VST inside Maschine so I've been avoiding that.

I used to just do everything in Ableton but I like Maschine so drat much that I do everything with it now. Ableton's effects are pretty drat good out of the box and it just looks appealing, which is why I use it.

And I'm using Windows 7.

What's everyone's writing process like? I usually don't really feel the stuff I write after sitting on it for a few weeks and I think it's a side effect of A) lack of experience, just gotta write more and B) not having a clear idea of what I want to produce

Usually I will just sit down "to write music". I will hit up YouTube/Spotify and find a break to chop or something I think would make a cool sample, or I will open a synth and design a patch I think sounds nice, and then I try to write a song around what I came up with. So my writing process is basically exploratory until I find something I think is cool, then I try to write a song around it.

I'm just not feeling my stuff though. I know you're your own harshest critic and all but I know it's not very good and I want to keep improving. I just gotta keep producing(and analyzing my production and other people's production) to improve, but I also feel like maybe I need to find a "direction" or "inspiration" because what's music without passion? Cool noises.

So where do you start? Do you already know what the song should sound like when you start writing, and then try to fill it in with samples and patches that match? Or do you start with the sample or patch, explore and find an interesting way to play it, and proceed from there?

I always start with an idea I've had in my head for a day or two. Then I can't get that idea to work so I go in another direction and it ends up working. I think 75% of my tracks start out that way.

Like with this track I made last week, I started out trying to make the sample the main part but I some how ended up chopping it into something almost unrecognizable and in deep in the background.

loving with the cutoff at the end doesn't sound cool at all listening to it now

extended drum solo time in beginning is retarded

snare doesn't snap well at all, i'll layer more snare samples on to make it bigger and maybe reverb and compression

actually the whole intro is bad because the individual elements aren't interesting enough by themselves to stand up to it

make it grimier. i like it, it just needs some tape hiss or overdrive or something. its weird and weird always benefits from dirt and grime.

If you are running mpc rigs do you bounce it straight out or as stems for arrangement?

If you are computer based (I am) I really rate the JB Timemachine if you can find it, became ToneBooster Timemachine which costs money but is cool for crunching up drums or delays, emulates sampler bitrate/samplerate and ad/da. I finally forked out for Tone-Projects Sonitex not long ago and if you've got the money it combines about 10 plugins worth of processing in one place, and doesnt fuckout like the esoteric decade old freeware. I posted a track I did which uses it a fair bit (doublebass/vocals and lots of other elements) in this thread not long ago.

I make it all in the Maschine stand alone then record and mix it in Ableton.

I'd love to have an old sampler sound emulator that doesn't sound like bitcrusher rear end. So I will peep that!

OK I'mma just listen through and say what comes to mind. I think the 2nd track sounds like a beefed up version of the 1st one, like it's got a really similar sound but does it better. First one sounds a little thin. Maybe the high hats in both cases could be more clicky, cuz the higher frequencies are already very shimmery and light and so are the hats so I feel like they kinda get indistinct.

In the 3rd track the drums sound dope, really dynamic. I think the crash cymbal is too constant though, but it doesn't really detract from it I guess. Maybe just cuz all the songs up to now have a lot of that bright cymbal sound going on.

Over the hill is cool, I like the sample. Not much to say there but I like this vibe and this track does it pretty well. See I feel like the high hats in these last two would go better in the first two tracks cuz they're a bit "harder" but maybe it's just the context.

Anyway poo poo is dope overall, 1st track is the weakest i.m.o.

Word. Thanks. The 1st track is the only one that uses someone else's drum kit so maybe that's where I hosed up hah. Well, Over the Hill is a mix of mine and some corny Lex Luger kit. Appreciate it!
