It took until the mid 1990s for a majority of Americans to be okay with interracial marriage. If racism seems to be surging it might be more to do with people actually talking about race issues more and not a sudden upswing in bigotry. I'm sure a white person hearing about church bombings in the 60s probably thought hatred was pervasive than, say, the 1940s or some such. But it was only so visible because it was being challenged.
