Even Matthews encourages people to disagree with him and do their own homework. Also MSNBC frequently has leveled criticism at the Democratic Party and the Obama administration. So long as MSNBC doesn't try to confuse editorializing and opinion with fact the way Fox does, their show hosts can be as biased as they want - identifying the bias and admitting to it means you have space to disagree and do your own thinking. MSNBC has its problems, but Morning Joe is a hell of a lot better than pretty much all of Fox's programming in spite of being an outlier - because even if I disagree, I feel like I have breathing room to do so. Everything just seemed so bleak back then. I remember really coming of political age during those years and especially after the shadiness behind the 2004 election it was real easy to believe that Republican party victory forever poo poo they were spewing.

You weren't alone - the reality is that in hindsight all we saw was the last gasp of 'old white racist & gullible majority' politics for presidential elections.

Also the major reason why the democratic party rocks rear end now is that smart youth who were angry at the Republican party during those years got involved in politics - it was their brains that were responsible for the superior Obama ground game. The republican strategists are basically being outmoded and out-thought at every turn now, by smart youth who they'd spurned during the Bush years, who can keep quick-thinking pace with how politics work these days. The fact is he was already obsolete in 2000 - but the illusion of that and 2004's lackluster democrat candidate created a luster of invincibility that Rove really didn't deserve. Now we really seem him as he is; he's a snake-oil salesman who was doomed to eventually be exposed.

The biggest takeaway from the election for me was this: Karl Rove, who was always a charlatan playing at being a genius, has been effectively exposed as obsolete by people like Nate Silver, and by the fact-based reality of how information and political campaigning works these days.

You can't be a lazy-rear end and rely on a dumb white majority to magically create success in spite of your dishonesty and incompetence any more (as was definitely the case with George W - pretty much anyone with any sense could see he was an idiot) - you have to be smart, and appeal to people's intelligence. This is the age of instant fact-checking and twitter feeds. Of easy computer use and facebook shared articles. Of youtube embarrassments and heated news site discussions. Of local communities organizing an extensively coordinated campaign ground-game at the local level thanks to the use of easy social networking. It's a time where if you are running a candidate who tries to rely on people's ignorance and lock-step prejudice, you are doomed to lose - and that loss will only get harsher as time goes on.

Yeah, there used to be jokes about how the republicans were always good at lock-stepping while democrats were like herding cats.

I think the reason that's reversed is the ease of use of the internet for everyone these days, young and old - conservatives tend to be even crazier these days because they've found other crazies online they can gravitate towards. This gets accelerated by all the pandering forces in play that previously used to keep them all in lock-step - namely conservative talk radio and TV like fox.

Meanwhile, democrats have found ways to come to consensus and have healthy discussion between their 'herded cats' who now understand how important it is to find common ground with others in order to get poo poo done. Democratic, liberal, and progressive discussions online tend to be on the reasonable fact-checking and searching-for-truth side of things, instead of languishing in delusion. The progressives who previously felt alienated now feel included and that they have a say in shaping the discussion forward.

And so...coming out of the Bush era, we have a marvelously organized and intelligent democratic party, up against a republican party which has become a hollow shell that resembles more a default place for Bill-of-rights-hating fundamentalist christian miscreants, bloated wealthy Ayn Rand worshipping plutocrats, and racist whack-jobs to wind up than a political party any more.

For an equivalent of what happened to the GOP to happen to the democrats, you would have to imagine what would happen if 9-11 truthers and chemtrails people took over huge chunks of the party - rather than got laughed at and routinely ridiculed whenever they pop up. The republican party needs to shed the crazies the way that you would want to shed dead skin tissue after a bad sunburn - and replace them by creating new policy that is relevant to what is happening now, and which connects with people regardless if they are a democrat, a minority, etc.

Yeah. The purpose of brainlessly invoking a 'truth lies in the middle' and 'fairness and balance' thing is to give the objectively false 'side' an air of legitimacy it does not deserve.

The most egregious example of this for me is evolution versus creationism. Evolution is a science that has withstood rigorous testing, extensive study, and supporting by mountains of evidence that is the result of countless hours of hard work on the part of scientists. Creationism wants to skip all that effort and just be considered somehow equal for 'fairness.' That's immediately imbalanced - it's like a guy on tricycle challenging a formula 1 race car driver to a race, but only if the guy on the trike is placed two inches from the finish line at the start. Obviously that tricycle is equal to a formula one race car and the truth lies in the middle.

There are indeed issues where there is nuance and multiple valid perspectives - but dumbing down something into a brainless dichotomy is just lazy and is a surrendering of one's critical faculties in a way that makes one wrongly feel as though they are taking the intellectual high ground.

I never went through a libertarian phase either. I was one of those people who had Ayn Rand worshipping friends (who since have rejected her) who totally thought I needed to read Atlas Shrugged because it changed their lives. (In reality they got into it because of that one Rush album the band has since apologized over.) So my first impression of Rand was that it was basically a religious cult of poor-haters who all see themselves as demigods above ordinary humans. Ever since I've pretty much despised Rand personally for turning some of my friends into miniature Ayn Rands for a couple years.

That's what her work does - makes people into mini Rands. Mini poor hating self superior hypocritical sociopaths. Her work is effective in that regard. It's doggerel trash in any other aspect though. Something to think about - scamming conservatives out of their money goes hand in hand with almost every major conservative figure. Dick Morris's superpac turned out to be an emailing scam that funneled money into his own pocket. Freedomworks bilks conservatives for lots of money. Worldnetdaily feeds subscriber info to organized scams designed to appeal to paranoid conservatives. It seems as though the infrastructure of the conservative movement in the US has been the "illusion" of an infrastructure - the reality is that their power players all have a skeleton of a political product and sell it as snake oil. Even Karl Rove has been exposed as basically a scammer and a fraud. It seems like the reality of how hollow the whole thing is is starting to come apart at the seams.

Just look at it in depth - almost every conservative figure is involved with scamming gullible conservatives for money to themselves. They no longer are a political movement and just a bunch of mountebank snake oil sellers looking to make bucks off either middle to lower class conservatives or off fooling wealthy dumbshits to funnel political action megabucks into the pockets of frauds.

It's coming apart at the seams because this last election was a massive wake-up call to just how far gone the republican infrastructure is in this country, and how infested it is with frauds who actually do nothing for the party aside from white noise and snatching up money. The reality that the republicans have neither the policy or the infrastructure integrity to win federal elections has sunk in.

As has the reality that so many of the major republican figures are just clueless fraudsters - They're there to scam scared stupid old white people and nothing more - in fact, that's always been their purpose; it's just that previously they could rely on a massive turnout by old dumb racist sexist delusional white morons to make up for their incompetent fraud, thus creating the illusion of a political infrastructure. What we're seeing now is a democratic party that is prepared to run a 50 meter dash in the olympics, and a republican party with a beer gut from staying on the couch guzzling other people's money for so long. Just take a look at the democratic strategy versus the republican - so much of the republican 'strategy' (if you can call it that) focused on basically just paying other people to do stuff for them. (And in many cases, not even that - as with Dick Morris.) Meanwhile, the democratic strategy involved actually constructing a solid ground game to connect directly with voters. Not only that, but the policy of the republican party is HORRIBLY out of date and out of touch with reality and with the majority of Americans - they are the party that insists they have a connection with 'real America' - and clearly they do not, as America has grown up out of the middle of the 20th century.

It's such a reality that now that even the old scam artists (like Gingrich, who has also run several donations-to-my-pocket scams) are even changing their tune to a doom and gloom routine. And yes, of course, that 'the GOP can't win elections we need to soul-search' comes attached to the same old pyramid marketing scheming that makes up so much of the GOP's present structure. So literally nothing is going to change unless there's some major revolt from the young republicans to turn the party into a big log cabin party by throwing out the moneychangers or something.

It's weird, but in a way I think that citizens united exposed the problem the GOP has with the fact that its entire structure is built around separating dumb white paranoids from their money, but not actually being capable of delivering results - if not for citizens united allowing an unprecedented amount of money to flood the GOP's coffers, they could have offered some other misleading excuse. But no. The idea that merely outspending someone to win is the key to victory was flushed rather handily down the toilet. You need to spend that money intelligently - and right now there's too many fraudsters and hacks in the GOP leeching up money for themselves and for poo poo that objectively does not work.

The GOP these days has a lot in common with those scam-product ads targeting dumb/vulnerable old people you see running on fox news network, pretty much. "Grandma, what's this huge series of credit card bills you just got from...this company I've never heard of before?" That kind of poo poo.

Maybe some day the GOP will resemble an actual political party again. Not right now though. It's pretty much just a multi-level marketing scam of clueless morons.

Proof:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8WgiDozHxY

This is the Florida GOP's "Jobs czar." He was collecting unemployment. He was also taking Europe trips and bought tons of goodies for himself. In addition to getting super-rich off what appears to be a case of job-destroying insider trading.

His predecessor, also appointed by Rick Scott, funneled millions of state money to "job creators" - who proceeded to create zero jobs, and in fact, cut jobs.

This poo poo's basically the present republican party in a nutshell.

Protesting is only okay if you do it by eating a chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-a, clearly.

Hey now, the privileged homophobic fuckwads have to endure hardship and sacrifice that it takes to make a stand too: http://iwaspoisoned.com/tag/chick-fil-a/

Sean Hannity says that the solution to school shootings is to have armed retired police officers in schools. It wasn't just a random idea he threw out, he kept on saying it, over and over again yesterday. He didn't say anything about paying them, or even hiring them as security guards. Like, his entire plan to prevent school shootings was for retired police officers to take a folding chair and a rifle to the nearest public school and sit in the hallway waiting for trouble.

Yes let's put gun-wielding senior citizens around our children. They can bring their own windowless vans too.

Every time I hear the right wing 'solutions' to problems like these involving living out gun-nut fantasy scenarios, I keep thinking of this audio cut-up: http://ia700400.us.archive.org/27/items/Noizes_Andy_Beaver_Dragnest/bd_Rifleman5.mp3

Anyway, it's patently obvious that Sean is pandering to his audience - no doubt a good deal of the bulk of seniors watching Fox all wish they could have totally been there with guns to go all John Woo and Goku Kamehameha million-kickpunch the school shooter because DONT TAKE ARE GUNZ. Pandering candyland solutions to real-world problems are rightwing charlatans like Hannity's stock and trade.

You heard it here first folks: "most gun owners are far better shooters than policemen".

Seriously, this is amazing evidence that humanity hasn't evolved at all since first figuring out agriculture.

If that statement were even remotely true (it's not) it would mean we have the worst police firearms training in the world.

Projectionist thing indeed.

People who project on others will also try to evade accusations or guilt of projection by wrongly accusing others of projection. This shows how shallow they are, for whether or not someone is projecting onto others is something that can be objectively observed and demonstrated regardless of how much the person projecting hopes their denials will confuse things in their favor. It lies in the content of the argument and evidence, not hand waving and Gish galloping.

Thats what always boggles my mind. Instead of some gun control and a massive overhaul of mental health in america they would rather expose their children to firefights and turn the streets and hallways into war zones.

Somewhere an NRA lobbyist just had a bug swarm orgasm out of his thornish devil's cock to that idea. Just think of all the gun sales! Cha Ching!

Yes yes mr hannity, the solution is more guns! Always more guns! Guns help your T-zone and cure the cancers. More guns and more money and more guns. Bang bang!

Remember when they said Nate Silver's math and facts were sissy un manly things and therefore wrong?

The people trying way too hard to be macho are often incompetent cowards and essentially just pansies who think getting all grunty voiced and impulsuve is a substitute for actually using your brain. A lot of them have this delusion because it gets stupidly encouraged by other grunty would be alpha male cowards. To me they are like yappy little yorkies barking constantly about how manly and tough they think they are - when really they are just irritating primadonnas.

Ohh yeahhh, a MAN totally would have powered up and Goku-ed that shooter because penis havers privelege actually causes bullets to curve around them in the air out of sissy fear. Sure sure.

Anyway, I hope that people take away from this the fact that people obsessed with machismo are really just insecure fools incompetents and cowards who over rely on male privelege to excuse their royal fuckups when they make tremendously stupid decisions. Male privelege is eroding these days and rightly so - the effect is that it leaves the overly macho idiots looking exactly like the yapping little yorkies they are. I'd take a competent man with a lisp and a sensitive tone over an incompetent boob who thinks straining to speak an octave lower than his natural voice at all times peppering tough guy bullshit into whatever he says will make his lovely ideas magically work.
