I think he was claiming it might inflate the total mortality by 2-3%, not that 2-3% of kids would die. I mean, it's still horrific and stupid (much like every other aspect of Dr. Oz) but it's not quite as bad as all that.

Me, a Fox News commentator: "people aren't dead unless I see their corpses in person." It's actually a huge problem. Once you start getting comfortable ignoring credible reports of deaths, it's a really quick step to poo poo like genocide denial.

I remember reading the English language edition of Granma when I was in Cuba, which was obviously self-serving to the interests of the Cuban Communist Party, but I don't think they ever reached the level of shamelessness and outright lies of Fox News, much less OANN. I don't think it's fully appreciated, in general, how biased and untruthful this propaganda is, even compared to other obvious propaganda.

I feel like the difference between RWM and traditional propaganda is, at some point, RWM swapped from "here's what we want to be true, and want you to believe" to "here's what you want to be true, and we'll tell you it is to make money off you," so now it's stuck in a bizarre and dangerous positive feedback loop.

And what's odd with their concern trolling about sex ed is that comprehensive sex ed actually covers issues like consent, meaning it actually helps prevent sexual abuse. This is especially true when they whinge about young children being taught "sex ed," because at the youngest ages it's about creating an awareness of what is and is not acceptable and what to do if you're the victim of something that makes you feel uncomfortable, explained in an age-appropriate fashion, not a point-by-point guide on How to gently caress.

Levantine posted:I really think there's more to it than that. I mean we are exposed to the same media but don't turn into salivating dogs every time the whistle is blown. What is it about some people who are just so susceptible to the brainwashing? I guess some folks are just assholes who like having their biases confirmed and there's nothing more to it. I think the nucleus around which that hate can form is an unspecific feeling that you, personally, are being hosed over, as evidenced by the fact your life is not exactly how you wish it to be, and, by God, it's someone else's fault! If you're being specifically targeted by actual, real things that exist, it's easy to focus your frustration on whatever is targeting you. If your life is just a shambolic mess because you're a fuckup, then you start looking around for things to blame. For example, if your wife leaves because you're an emotionally unavailable, lazy manchild who wishes to be waited upon hand and foot, instead of interrogating your own contributions to the situation, you may decide that, really, the problem is feminism telling women they shouldn't have to put up with that poo poo. If you notice that your D-average failson can't get into a good university because they spent the entirety of high school smoking weed and watching porn, then perhaps you will reason that the problem can't possibly be related to you, but is instead related to affirmative action taking away your son's inherent right to be a useless fuckup with no consequences.

Hell, the defenses of Trump are that if it weren't for that nasty "Deep State" then he would be making the economy great again and all of us could go work in factories for enough money to afford a house! Hate the government, hate immigrants, hate other countries, hate liberals, all of them are holding you back, and never once bother to actually reflect on yourself. Which isn't to say, of course, that a lot of the dissatisfaction with conditions of living in America isn't well-founded. There's a lot to be pissed off about, but it's the billionaires and their captive politicians causing the problems, not Black people getting into university or people sneaking across the border or feminists.

Or before that, supposedly satanic messages being backmasked into Beatles songs and poo poo? Unhappy, uptight authoritarians always target music because it's one of the foremost expressions of counterculture, dissent and emotion in general, and they want to eliminate those things from society. At best, you get the Grandpa Simpson types who say "I was with it, but then they changed what 'it' was and now what I'm with isn't 'it' and what's 'it' is weird and scary to me!" and at worst you get Tipper loving Gore.

I think we're in a poo poo situation because people don't know things any more. Basic historical literacy about things like the Holocaust is slipping. I was talking about the BLM protests with someone online the other day and they didn't know who Rodney King was (they said, "well you can't expect things to change overnight" and I said "it's been 50 years since Fred Hampton and 30 since Rodney King, maybe they're pissed because it hasn't changed in literal decades", and they had no idea what I was talking about). If your historical knowledge is limited to what happened 30 minutes ago, of course you're going to be easy prey for this bullshit. If your knowledge of the Civil Rights Movement is limited to "MLK Jr. said 'I have a dream' and then waved a wand, and racism disappeared!" then of course you're going to fall for disingenuous right wingers saying "hey, why is there so much crime in Black neighbourhoods???"

The thing that strikes me as odd about right wing media as a concept is: it's so predictable. They've got their talking points, largely based on the desires of RWM consumers, and they're completely unhinged from reality anyway, so why not just play Choose Your Own Adventure with what you want to be true instead of dealing with a third party? Why not just set up text-to-speech to repeat, ad nauseum, "HILLARY IS BAD AND RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERY ILL THAT'S BEFALLEN YOU AND YOU ARE PERFECT, BLACK PEOPLE ARE BAD, IMMIGRANTS ARE COMING TO STEAL YOUR JOB" and cut out the middleman?
