Question for you guys: I did a moderate amount of flying this year, and was targeted for 6 months of Delta Gold which ends in February of 2017. It's been pretty nice, to be honest, and the ability to switch my flight whenever I want is pretty great and convenient. I'm going to end up finishing the year with 52 segments on Delta (although can probably push that to 56 with another trip I have planned). I'm not sure exactly, but I'm probably going to fall a bit short of the dollar goal of $6k (probably less than $1k). Is it worth it for me to try to hit gold for next year instead of settling for Silver? I only really started flying a lot in August of this year and will have a similar schedule next year, with the caveat that I may move to a city where it's better for my to fly American, which I should know within the next few weeks. If that's the case, should I try to match status over at American?

Looks like I'm finishing up the year with 60 segments and $5300 spent on Delta. I'm boned right? Can I buy $700 worth of Delta gift cards to get gold or something?

I'm currently Gold on Delta. There's a good chance I'm going to be moving to Philadelphia next summer, which is an American hub and has a fairly short (600 mile), direct flight I might be taking frequently (every 1-2 weeks) for a bit. This is a bad situation to be in, as I won't be racking up segments or miles, correct? American also seems to not care about segments for their match, right?

i fly airplanes posted:You're going to have to be specific about where you're flying to. Is direct flight the only option? If so, you may not have a choice. And if your employer is paying, you should be OK with the nonstop pricing premium. Ugh, that sounds worse than I thought. The route would be Philly to Louisville. I'd be paying for this out of pocket, so no employer to worry about. I'd keep flying delta but the direct flight sounds so great after dealing with connections for the past 6 months.

I posted about this a few months back, but now my FF status for the year cleared up. I currently live in the Midwest, and began traveling to Louisville, KY about every 2 weeks out of pocket midway through last year. Between that and some business travel, I racked up 60 segments on Delta for the year, but was just short of the minimum spend for Gold, so I'm stuck with Silver this year. I've got a few more months of this, at which point I'll be moving to Philadelphia (AA hub), and will have to travel from PHL - SDF every week or two (again), at least until the end of the year when my SO is able to move to Philadelphia. The bright side of this is that there are direct flights on American between the two, but unfortunately they won't always work out time wise, so I may be stuck making a connection. Anyone have any thoughts on how to best to travel between Philly and Louisville? Should I switch my travel to American Airlines starting now, or stick with Delta in Philly? Any credit cards I can get to make this transition easier?

So for AA Platinum/Gold, do you only get upgraded if you use the vouchers, or do the vouchers just give you a guaranteed upgrade?

Arzakon posted:Thanks, hopefully I can fine one segment to upgrade and even if its 100K+ miles it will probably be worth it to me. If I wasn't prepaid on my hotel in HK I'd consider cancelling that. With my rollover I'll make Platinum just on this ticket, and I haven't even started hitting Amex tiers yet. Wait you're doing this on purpose?

I just added DTW - Get halfway to your destination - DTW to my list of travel experiences. Apparently something broke on the plane and they didn't want to leave it stranded not in Detroit. After being stuck in Delta's system wide shutdown earlier this year maybe it's a sign.

On the return trip my 10pm flight out of Detroit got delayed until 3am. I'm flying through Detroit again next weekend. Hopefully things don't keep on melting down for Delta.

Delta: 25k MQMs, 24 MQS, $2300 MQD. Only one trip for business in there, and a few rewards flights, so I'm low compared to last year. FF programs are not made for short flights to/from the Midwest. Now I just have to figure out whether I like Delta enough to stick with them even though I'm moving to Philadelphia, an AA hub. Is American going to be terribly different with mid-tier status (Delta Gold)?

I'm looking at America FF levels. Do I have this right? 1. AA Platinum gets you MCE (equivalent of Delta Comfort Plus?) at booking versus as an upgrade, like on Delta. 2. For AA Platinum/Gold, I'll never get an upgrade on my most common flight (PHL - SDF), since it's just over 500 miles. 3. I'd need to use 2 upgrade tickets for that flight, since each ticket only counts for 500 miles. 4. I'll need to fly PHL-SDF 50x round trip to qualify for Platinum for next year (not counting other travel). Do I have all of that right?

Is "priority" seating or any other benefit with any of the American Airlines credit cards worth it? Looks like I'm going to be trying to do a status match for American. Is it similar to the Delta credit cards, which give you zone 1 but not Sky (or whatever the American equivalent is)?
