I really liked Hollow Knight, should I pick up Celeste? I am also thinking about picking up Shantae since I liked the previous ones but I don’t know much about Half-Genie Hero. Also I heard good things about Bloodstained it’s like a classic Castlevania and not a metroidvania, right? I’m also thinking about getting Undertale because I’ve heard it’s heavily influenced by Earthbound. Is it true that to get the best ending you have to not kill any enemies? Is the game still fun that way?

Celeste is an entire game made up of the White Palace and the Path of Pain.

Undertale has an interesting battle system that can be like an action puzzle to defeat an enemy without killing them. It’s an absolute must if you’re an Earthbound fan. Just play the game “normally” at first. The game is designed to have multiple playthroughs. You can’t do the pacifist run first go anyway.

Celeste and Bloodstained (it’s basically Castlevania 3) are pretty good but Shantae is super mediocre.

If you liked the platforming in HK then get Celeste. It's like that but world's better. Celeste is also just a fine game in its own right: the story, music, and presentation are great and if you have trouble with the platforming just use the assist mode to just experience the game.

The game's probably more fun if you don't kill people but I'm pretty sure you can't do that the first time you play so you have to play more than once. Make sure you like bullet-hell though because that's what the battles are like, and it's ultimately what turned me off the game. Now, most people won't agree with me but rather than being reminiscent of Earthbound or an homage to it, it struck me as more derivative and as a pastiche of what makes Earthbound good. However, as I said, that's probably just me.

The battles in Undertale are like extremely easy bullet hell with a few exceptions if you’re going on the evil path. They aren’t Ikaruga or anything.

Sure but you still have to like the genre. It's not one that I find enjoyable and even though I was able to beat the game the first time I didn't like the experience enough to try it again. They're creative bullet-hells, for what's worth, but dodging things doesn't do it for me.

I hate bullet hell and i love undertale

Not that this proves anything, but you most certainly don't have to like shmups. It's a vastly different experience to play a game that is entirely based upon dodging bullets, or one that has that occasionally in battle.

Yeah, same. I enjoyed Undertale but I bounce off bullet hell games. It is based on those sorts of things but handled differently enough that it works.

If the point is "draw people into the game so they buy the toys" then I feel like that's probably not a huge indication of poo poo performance, but I also think they're insane to have thrown out a toy-based game in 2018 after 3-4 bigger names have long since cancelled their entries into the genre so who knows

It really seems like a sunk cost fallacy; it probably started life just before the market fell out from under toys to life games, but they already greenlit it and poured in money so maybe more money will pop out?...

I honestly thought Starlink was free-to-play and buying the toys gave you an advantage and fun perks like Star Fox, but loving LMAO they expect you to pay $80 for the core game in a new franchise AND buy the toys/upgrades/downloads.

My understanding at least is with the deluxe pack that's on sale right now you probably wouldn't ever have to buy a toy because it just includes most of them in digital form.

I started Undertale. I know I have the option of attacking enemies but why would I do that when I can just threaten the frog and then let it live?

I’m excited to play more of this bizarre game

I like Starlink, feels worth its price. Although I'd be cautious: many of the quests are just travel to the destination marker, and return to base. I think it's trying to entertain you with upgrade rewards for your ship

The fights are fun and intense, atmosphere is great, the sound and VO are awesome, especially if you miss the Starfox team

I bought digital, I have no interest in the toys

Exactly.

I really should finish Undertale, I keep ending up in situations were I could play it but with no sound (in work, ahem), and music is such a huge part of the game that end up not playing it.

You don't gain xp if you let things live

Why would you threaten the frog when you can help it overcome its shyness or discuss the merits of getting swole.

As someone who played through the regular digital edition and had a blast with it, I highly recommend getting the deluxe digital, especially now that it's on sale. The three extra weapons&pilots locked behind that tier offer several interesting abilities that I kinda wish I was able to use the first time around.

Also, I beat the main story of Celeste in two days (~6 hours) and it was ah-mazing! Highly recommended. I don't have much patience for brutal difficulty in games, and Celeste is very accomodating with its quick respawn, tight controls, and level design that often offers juuuust enough slack so that nothing feels punishing.

I started Celeste and I tried the B-side of the first stage... hahaha... sorry maybe next time. I could barely get past the first room.

The difficulty curve is a lot smoother once you've gone through the main game before doing the B-Sides.

They sure get brutal eventually though
