I'd almost argue more people play to not come last over the small difference in money between 2nd and 3rd. The story of being on Jeopardy and winning is great, coming in 2nd is honorable, being last place is a punchline.

Yeah, this is justly wholly incorrect. as long as you don't channel wolf blitzer, just getting on the show is an accomplishment and if you don't win then it doesn't matter where you placed. nobody is getting jeered for "last place" in a 3-player game where only first matters. I think people play suboptimally re: DD betting and such because, you know, they're trivia fans and jeopardy! fans and they didn't devote their life to grinding out every edge in a silly game show you only get to play once. None of it has to do with wanting to finish second instead of third. Sure, it's worth taking a minute to figure out betting for second in a runaway scenario because there's a thousand bucks on the line, but there's really no other difference between the two also-ran places

Yeah, i guess if you're a serious presidential history buff (they didn't spot McKinley in the clue, you'd have had to get there) or know the City of Light or the exposition you'd have been able to get in, and I guess there's enough angles that it's not impenetrable but it just feels difficult in a way that most regular season FJs aren't. yep, five eps no problem. He mentioned that in addition to chemo he was taking two pills and one injection a day, but he didn't elaborate further. Jimmy of Clue Crew fame heavily hinted that they're taping the GOAT tournament next week, so he should be able to power through there. I'm optimistic for the future of the show even past that. Males and females have performed basically identical in the show in terms of getting questions right. However males make higher wagers/bets and presumably win more often though that. Of course one other thing the “percent right” stats wouldn’t account for is a female contestant might not buzz in at all in a more male biased category.

very impressed by the amount of work that went into this and then they just didn't split out pre-doubled values

"While round one questions worth $1,000 had the lowest likelihood of being answered correctly (almost 1-to-1), questions valued at $500 proved to be the second most difficult. Additionally, categories worth $600 and $800 had a ratio of over 2-to-1 in both rounds, which just goes to show – you never know which question is going to be the one that stumps you."

I get being “ashamed” and whatnot, but I want to just post here that I thought you did fine and should be proud of the episode.

People always forget that a big chunk of Jeopardy is out of your control: especially A. The opponents and B. The board, and we whether the board randomly favors you or your opponents.

In your case, if it helps, you can always hold viewing parties and just pretend you accidentally taped over your Jeopardy episode with your Who Wants to Be a Millionaire episode.

“Oh , sorry , I thought this was Jeopardy, but I guess we will have to watch Millionaire. Did you know this was once hosted by Regis Philbun ?”

So just saying, no reason not to be proud dude.

I think the 'Greatest' competition has had a slightly negative effect on 'regular' Jeopardy. Mainly, after watching 3 of the best and brightest at Jeopardy just killing every kind of esoteric 'answer' in a wide variety of categories, watching the current crop of 'less than the greatest' flail about either just standing around (no-one answers) on super easy questions, or flat-out getting them wrong... is painful.

right, but that's the point. there's a reason they introduce people as a "a dentist from omaha" or "a bowling instructor from shelbyville" and not "a 3-time geek bowl champion" or "a learnedleague a-rundler"

jeopardy is fun because you get to watch normal people who know a little bit more than the average person do their best to answer tough questions. they obviously know enough to get on the show and some games are tougher than others. that's part of the fun, and it's great when you know something the contestants don't (although you don't have to make a post about it every time)

there's the ToC every year and a higher-level tournament a few times a decade for people who just hate seeing easy questions but like... watch university challenge or something. idk, man

edit: or... just go beat jeopardy for like six figures and pay quiz bowlers to duke it out in front of you for $20 an hour

A question for those who know jeopardy well (as in former contestants or insiders)...

Do they coach contestants to say the full name of the category every. single. time. ?

They don't, no. They absolutely encourage you to shorten it. Not to say "same category" or "finish the category" or anything that might throw alex off, but to identify it without saying the full name, for sure.

the trick is to figure out which category is obviously sponsored by some company and leave that for last because they won't end the round until it's been completed
