I don’t really like those categories where you have to figure out the word inside the word. Or rather I do but I wish I had more time to figure them out. Last night wasn’t that bad though.

Have you heard of that before A ditloid is a type of word puzzle,[1] in which a phrase, quotation, date, or fact must be deduced from the numbers and abbreviated letters in the clue. Common words such as 'the', 'in', 'a', 'an', 'of', 'to', etc. are not normally abbreviated.[1][dubious ] The name 'ditloid' was given by the Daily Express newspaper,[1] originating from the clue: 1 = DitLoID ≡ 1 Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Once he gets enough of a lead, I just sort of tune out because nothing else said on the program really matters. TBH I rarely get interested in the competitive aspect of Jeopardy; I'm just tuning in to try and answer the questions myself. James is at least interesting to me because he plays so aggressively compared to his opponents.

zakharov posted:From what I've read, it has less to do with his personality and more with someone playing the game "right." The Serious Jeopardy Watchers have been screaming for people to bet big on Daily Doubles for years. And it makes sense: most contestants get most questions right, so logically if you're in that situation you should feel good about betting on yourself unless you really hate the category. And if you do, why did you pick that clue? One reason I was sad to see him go is that I didn't want to see the sad tiny wagers return to the show. And, of course, I'll instinctively root for anyone who's close to breaking a record of some kind. Emma seems cool though. She killed the king and that's rad.

JAMOOOL posted:Ken's book goes into this stuff in some detail, he talks about how certain categories are not as hard as they look because they tend to stick to names that are well-known in those fields, therefore you only have to memorize a few things. For example if a clue begins "this Spanish philosopher..." there's only gonna be like 2 possible answers. Yeah. Watching from home it’s amazing how often I think “well, who’s the one that I know?” And it ends up being correct

lol my dad and I got into an argument last about last night's Jeopardy over our wildly different philosophies of how you should bet in Final Jeopardy. He thinks that since the guy was in a runaway position he shouldn't have bet anything and I think that as long as you've secured the win and have your spot on the next game you might as well bet everything past that. I suppose the category probably played a role in it too since I know he isn't a classical music buff. What do the rest of you think? (Extremes only please. Splitting the difference is the path of the weak)

The thing is that anyone who replaces Trebek is going to be struggling right off the bat to both carve out their own identity as a host while at the same time not just trample all over his legacy -- not that anyone's coming in looking to do that but I think fans are going to be a bit protective. Ken's a known quantity, not just to Jeopardy fans but in the mainstream and people already know he respects the game and he respects Alex and he already has defined his persona on the show fairly well (albeit as a contestant rather than a host) I think he makes sense from the perspective that people know he's going to be a good steward of the show even if he doesn't measure up all the way at first.
