I quite like the way brass is used in the Dances with Wolves theme. It starts out very measured and only jumps to an energetic climax towards the end. The starting trumpet solo is still my favourite among all the soundtracks around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXmfVKZLICg

I felt Lincoln was overscored. Particularly at parts with heightened tensions, it would have been better to let the silence linger. But it felt like Williams wasn't content with that and had to wring every bit of emotion out of his audience. I've always had an appreciation for films that knew how to utilise silence, but this wasn't one.

If anyone is looking for a new soundtrack, Cloud Atlas is gorgeous. The Atlas March and its reprise in the final two tracks (Finale and End Title) are two of the best tracks I've heard in a while.

Carol has the best soundtrack of the year for me. Lots of woodwinds, it's a very distinctive sound.

Stare-Out posted:Every Frame A Painting made a pretty interesting video about scores (or lack thereof) in the Marvel movies. That Captain America scene is way better without narration. The temp music trend is sucky but I'm sure it makes things so much easier for the director. And nobody's really expecting you to be creative in that direction, why try? Take your million bucks and spend your creative energies on something else.

Dan Golding did a response video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcXsH88XlKM I'm not convinced the Star Wars theme is particularly derivative. But he makes some interesting arguments about temp music -- that (a) today filmmakers use temp music from samey movie soundtrack tunes rather than more original non-movie tracks from Holst or Rachmaninov or whatever, and that (b) composition software better simulates brass and percussion so we get more of that instead of woodwinds and strings. The thesis then is: Marvel's music is forgettable because each film's music differs through "texture" not melody (not sure what this means). His argument is that we might be able to accept this as its kind of originality. It's a really interesting debate, to say the least.

You're this dude: Just kidding. But more seriously: He's obviously using a very simplistic test for whether a score is memorable. But most moviegoers know a good soundtrack when they hear one. You probably don't need to remember the melodies at all to know Carol and The Hateful Eight had some cool tunes.
