The Aliens and Star Trek II soundtracks are two of my favorites of all time, I don't really care if even by that time he had plagiarized himself ten times over. Although, if I recall, the Aliens soundtrack was also one where he was required to cook it up in three weeks.

Wait, how the hell does that happen. Isn't this stuff planned well in advance? Did James Cameron just go through pre-production, production and editing and suddenly go, "HOLY poo poo I FORGOT TO ADD MUSIC"?

e: Nevermind.

Aliens was one of those productions, kind of like Star Wars, where the film's release was a small miracle.

Oblivion's score has really grown on me, but there was a bit in one of the tracks that really bugged me for ages because it sounded so familiar and I think I've nailed it. In "You can't save her", around the 2:45 mark, is that not note for note from Zimmer/Newton-Howard's "Batman Begins" score? I'll try to dig up a comparison.

E: Actually it was in "The Dark Knight", the track being "Harvey Two-Face" around the 2:42 mark. There's a more similar version somewhere on the album which isn't quite as "Zimmerific" as that but it's pretty drat close I'd say.

Oblivion's scoring was not exactly inspired, unless one means to say "inspired by." At 2:23 we get Gotham's Reckoning, followed instantly by Harvey Two-Face, and most of the rest of the soundtrack sounds like Mass Effect. This is so note-for-note it's a little jarring.

Yeah, I was really underwhelmed by his score on Star Trek 2009 but so much of his stuff for Into Darkness was incredible.

Star Trek 2009 is "I thought of one killer riff for this movie and by god if I'm not going to do it until we're all sick of it"

Conan the Barbarian is like a really long music video, I don't think we're going to see a movie like it again. The score is arguably its most important element.

James Horner made the same score over and over again, but it was a good score by god. Star Trek II and Aliens and who knows what else are practically the same score and they're amazing, part of my childhood.

Nothing they do is ever going to top Treadstone Assassins, but they're welcome to try.

Every Frame A Painting made a pretty interesting video about scores (or lack thereof) in the Marvel movies.

This should really be in the OP, it's that good. Even though I can't be mad at Mad Max, one of my favorite soundtracks lately (and I would say quite a loving memorable one).

I love that movie and book, great tension.

I found the movie absolutely hilarious when I watched it last night. It's just funny until the halfway point, where it becomes nuts. As one person put it, "By the end of the scene in the meeting room, I was convinced that I too was a Nazi conspirator." That's not to say I wasn't impressed by a lot of the stuntwork, or the way the movie's last hour is just one continuous action scene. And that score rivals anything today.

I found it surprising that apparently no one has attempted a direct remake in fifty years.

The greatest generation--the last of the true American heroes, who fought alongside Captain America and cast the ring into the fire, would never be anything but selfless crusaders.

Also I think most people would say that World War II was the last of the imperialist conflicts between the western European powers. They meant to have that nipped in the butt in 1918, but poo poo happens.

Anyway, film music. Black Panther in my opinion is the first MCU movie in a while to go with a music strategy besides "wallpaper."

I mean sure, you can say you remember most of the Marvel scores and even like them. Everyone's allowed to enjoy a fish sandwich at McDonald's and the other simple things in life.

Guardians of the Galaxy is mostly 70's rock staples, I'm not even sure what OST there is to remember.

I wouldn't put almost any Marvel stuff up against prime Elfman, Williams, Shore, Zimmer, or say, any TOS Star Trek movie intro. Not in the same conversation.

The score for Isle of Dogs is one of the best unintentional gaming soundtracks ever.

Seriously, this drove me to distraction while watching Bicentennial Man.

Well Horner sucks that way, but at least he's stealing from himself most of the time as far as I can tell. (He steals brazenly from 2001 for Aliens).

If I were a more astute scholar of film I could probably nail down where he steals everything from, before proceeding to re-use it all at least 7-8 times apiece.

Still, it's better than 300:

See all those song titles that mention Elliot Goldenthal?

quote:

"Warner Bros. Pictures acknowledges and regrets that a number of the music cues for the score of "300" were, without our knowledge or participation, derived from music composed by Academy Award winning composer Elliot Goldenthal for the motion picture "Titus." Warner Bros. Pictures has great respect for Elliot, our longtime collaborator, and is pleased to have amicably resolved this matter."

I didn't like Solo's use of the asteroid theme, speaking of Solo. It's possibly the greatest piece from Star Wars and worked because it moved so well with the Falcon's movements. Just kind of jamming it in to a space scene just ended up being distracting to me.

Yeah it's kinda like how lower budget Star Wars video games just insert random Williams tracks in where they would have otherwise hired a composer.

Anyway came in here to talk about a couple of things.

Rogue One is cementing itself in my head as the best of the contemporary Star Wars films, and a big part of this is Michael Giacchino's score, which sounds like a Star Wars score while actually sounding like its own score.

Like, the Imperial Suite will just be Another loving March Remix, right? No actually:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C2wCcuKmLI

It's just a really intense soundtrack that does a lot of work to push the movie's different direction. It's like the opposite of Solo, a Star Wars movie with an actual idea.

While listening to this on Spotify I also discovered that the player changes to a lightsaber, so that was fun.

For those of us who like things that sound like Star Wars now and then but have listened Star Wars to death, might I recommend Trinity and Beyond (also on Spotify):

I would also like to randomly add that Batman Returns is Danny Elfman's best work.

Just curious, what places it above his first Batman score, in your estimation?

The entire soundtrack sounds like a singular piece and is extremely listenable, instead of a couple of jagged edges here and there (like, where the hell did Roasted Dude come from in Batman?) The three main characters of Batman Returns interact constantly and are all building on the same vibe, so the score has to gel well and it does.

Usually Hollywood composing avoids big melodies so the music doesn't distract from the visuals. But the style here is really heavy on the melodies, typically something you hear more with wind ensembles/symphonic bands. As a former band member... extremely into this poo poo.

Doing the nice Morricone-era callbacks but extremely his own thing also.

All those tracks got released when the score came out, they were just strung out through different places. Some were only Apple, some were only some phone companies, ect. But they were all at least on YouTube or files.

Very weird roll out

Call me old-fashioned, but a track being on YouTube doesn't really count as a release of anything, with or without YouTube Music.
