What you're thinking of is 1948, a reworking of 1984 by Andy Croft and illustrated by Martin Rowson. I keep meaning to pick that up, actually, and I do have Amazon vouchers going spare... I should rectify that.

Dear god, THANK YOU. I was starting to doubt my own sanity.

I like how IDS is delicately removing the fingers of someone clinging for dear life, like he wants rid of them but is reluctant to touch a pauper.

He used to deliver coal, but in 1985 switched to fish guts. Also, he looks like Ricky Gervais and bobs around like a weebl on a spring.

I actually quite like his art.

Nice use of light and shadow, perspective (visual, not political obviously), his characters actually have... character. Pretty decent, some other strips look rather lazy in comparison (*cough*The Express*cough*).

Shame he's for the wall really.

Maybe he can be re-educated?

I feel like Riddell is very much an old-school cartoonist, he's doing it consciously as a stylistic thing like old 18th or 19th century cartoons used to be. At least he's not as reliant on them as he used to be.

I've seen a cartoonist in the times some time ago who was even more explicit with it, with 250 word speech bubbles and captions and 19th century spelling and capitalisations. Did the cabinet of the time in wigs and cravats as well, with the same linework and art style you'd see in Punch complaining about Napoleon and his bonny part. Anyone know who/what I mean?
