S.M. Stirling is worse than any apocalypse. It's been mentioned but I have to recommend The Postman by David Brin for anyone interested in this thread's subject matter. Oryx and Crake/Year of the Flood are superb, don't listen to anyone who disparages Atwood, she's one of the best writers alive today. There's also the related Dying Earth subgenre, which tends to take a more broad and existential view of things, but hits many of the same notes. Look at The City at the End of Time by Greg Bear, and I hear some good things about Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun series. This thread is appreciated by others beyond the OP by the way, I love this genre in any guise so it's great to get goon recommendations and see titles I've never come across before.
