A new thread for a new year - though the old one certainly had highlights to be missed. Nice work on the OP, too.

I only wonder if this thread will even have the opportunity to see the sort of :allears: madness that the collapse of MM entailed.

Related question - has anyone ever managed to play EU3 all the way to the end?

I think the only game I've ever hit the end date in was in DW with the MiscMods Peace of God scenario. Took Alexandria to owning most of Africa, the Middle East and large chunks of Russia, haven't felt interested enough in a game to take it to completion since. European countries just get really, really tedious as you get closer to the end date and every war is filled with massive armies where you have to pay minute attention to which army is heading where or lose 30-40 regiments instantly.

e: evidently did a bit more than just that, digging up a post I made about the game somewhere else ages ago through the magic of google:

"Expanded my Alexandrian empire to encompass the entirety of the Middle East, Eastern and Southern Africa, Australia and Indonesia. Eventually took most of the Caucasus/Maghreb/southwestern Africa, as well as the southern half of Italy (including Rome, which was a pain with the Austrian Holy Roman Emperor siding with the Pope in my grab for it but the orthodox missionary bonus was a godsend)."

Funnily enough what I find most interesting in that screenshot is that we apparently get to earn nicknames for our nation's leaders :allears:

Re: the opinion/diplomacy changes they definitely look like a step in the right direction, and I'm hopeful that Paradox will manage to balance it well. Though even if they don't there's always modding.

I wouldn't call Sengoku garbage, that's really excessive. It's certainly underwhelming, though.

Also, don't pre-order games. The money you'll save by saving yourself from surprise bad games will outweigh the money you'd save from pre-order discounts. Also, pre-ordering is bad for the industry as it teaches companies bad habits, and promotes bad behavior with their press relations (embargoes, etc). Paradox is one of the good companies in this respect, but it's still a general thing I try to adhere to across the board. I make some really rare exceptions, but that's usually when I want to send a message when a company is taking a risk or doing something different (Dark Souls PC, for example).

These are good points. Pre-ordering everything blindly because the company tosses you a five dollar discount isn't a good habit. But that's a derail there's probably already an argument about in some other thread somewhere.

While I really regret buying Sengoku it certainly wasn't garbage, just a disappointment. I mean, the game still worked which is more than you can say about a lot of things out there.

e: Mirdini I'm trying to think of a game I was more annoyed at myself for buying after the fact and I can't come up with one actually

(don't buy Sengoku people)

I think Sengoku was garbage, and that it worked because there was so little in it in terms of gameplay and features that to not work would be impossible short of it crashing on load-up.

My favorite Empire AI issue is that at launch they couldn't storm buildings, so a hopeless defense could turn into a glorious victory as long as you had a couple units garrisoned in buildings, put the game on triple speed, and then went to make yourself a sandwich or whatever until the time ran out.

I still love the game and the AI is a lot better now. 185 hours on Steam :france:

I spent far too much time in Empire for how buggy the game was. Despite all those flaws the fun you could have with cannons and musket-armed infantry somehow overcame all that and had me sink hundreds of hours into the thing. Didn't even pick up Napoleon until a few years after that came out since I felt I was having enough fun with Empire (still regret that decision but ah well). While it probably didn't deserve the spot that doesn't change the fact that it was my most-played game in 2009.

Certainly a different experience from EU3, but no less valuable in my eyes.

It specifically says it's an AI thing. Players aren't affected.

Pretty sure that while (thankfully) the event chain that kicks the Low Countries out of Burgundy can only happen to the AI player-controlled Burgundies still take the 33% heir chance hit? At least that's what the dev diary seems to say when I read it.

Then again I read it wrong the first time around and thought the event was possible for players too so I might be wrong here as well? But I only see AI control referenced when talking about the event chain, not about the NI itself.

I must be insane because I started playing Vicky 2 on my first run with my EUIII save. Aside from a few great powers Europe is totally balkanized and the USA isn't even a continuous country along the Eastern coast. It's hard to tell what the hell is going on since there is so much conflict. Nearly every power could easily defeat the great powers in a slug fest at the start of the game.

A few of the countries I'll assume do not exist in Vicky 2. Such as Champagne and England. So when the import happened it renamed with open country names in Alphabetical order. England is called Bhopal and Cuba is over in the caucuses because there was no Golden Horde. My EUIII game was loving insane by the end anyway, Great Britain was a separate entity from England, Scotland, Northumberland and Wales. If I couldn't afford the infamy hit for annexing I'd just liberate. When GB invaded me over my Italian provinces it was a loving deathmatch to maximum war weariness and total manpower depletion on both sides. After I "won" the war by capturing England I let war drag just so their revolts would liberate themselves from USA down through Mexico to Argentina. The left over red in there is just remnants of the British Empire being chipped away unattended. France exploded after the 100 years war and never recovered and is better known as "Canada" since that is all they own since they decided to get the gently caress out of Europe and live in the colonies.

This world is way way more chaotic than the centralized large states in the vanilla scenarios. If I had a severe case of OCD I'd look for a way to rename the countries to closer historical states.

Dang this looks ridiculous. Any chance you'd publish the save/scenario so the rest of us can try it out? As nice as the regular 1836 start is I love batshit scenarios like this so much more.

armies of nothing but guards and artillery and hussars. Good times.

You probably want to get at least some engis and regular infantry in that mixture in HoD, the changes to land war make running only guards/arty/hussars not nearly as efficient as it once was (relevant point is about 8 images in). The composition actually probably works really well against Russia with their hundreds of thousands of conscripts but if you find yourself in a fight with France/Prussia your guards are going to do a ton of damage but break a lot faster than regular infantry would, potentially leaving the arty open to get slaughtered. Engineers meanwhile are the only unit that improve siege efficiency before tanks, and having two-three of them in every army speeds up sieges by a remarkable amount :eng101:

Not really, you're kinda hosed in that regard. Your best bet is to try to get socialists in power asap and pass healthcare reforms for the population boost, when you hit the higher levels your boosted pop growth means that even with that massive emigration you'll still be gaining 20,000 people a month or so. Passing liberal reforms and shifting into democracy should also slow that down somewhat as DrProsek said.

(Have to say seeing Colorado something like 70% Nanfaren at one point in my China game was pretty silly).

Ok, I've just got another quick CK2 question (boy this thread moves quickly; my old question was pages ago now): How come the small arsenal I built in my republic a little while ago (the republic of Cyprus. I should be fine unless I invest all my gold into internet monopoly money, eh?) disappear when a new Grand Mayor took charge? I'm sure that didn't happen in my old Gotland game, so I'm not certain about what's up. I don't suppose anyone here knows?

Yeah I've run into this as well, seems like a bug, would sadly recommend just never building arsenals as a Republic unless it gets fixed.

GPs can also influence countries up to friendly and if they hit 100 influence while friendly with a country that is in your sphere they can remove it from your sphere (much like you can to countries other GPs have sphered).
