Pretty much; if you're getting to know a particular character you'll fairly quickly figure out their favourite haunts even if you can't beeline for which specific one they're at. Want to give a gift to Penny? Check her trailer, the library, the bench by the saloon or the tree by the graveyard. I couldn't tell you when she goes to each of these places, but I know they are most of what she does!

That's likely it - once you've talked to someone a few times they won't talk to you again that day. Though there's some situations where a character will just repeat their same lines, usually when it's specifically about what they're doing.

That's exactly what it is. As far as I can tell, the game loads sprites at certain locations relative to the sprite sheet. The kiss sprite is way down at the bottom of each character's sprite sheet, but Maru's one for her work uniform doesn't go down that far, so the game is actually loading something from a completely different graphic. I think it might be part of the tileset of the room; it kind of looks like the borders where the rooms meet the black space. Something similar happens with her portrait graphic. If you're at 10 hearts with her (but not married) there's a conversation you can have in winter where she cuddles up to you to keep warm, and it uses her portrait where she's clasping her hands together cutely (the other characters have a blush in this location but Maru's is different). If she's at work, though, her work sprite sheet has a horrified gasp graphic there, so it looks like she's screaming at you about being cold.

Cutting down trees too tedious, or need hardwood? Upgrade the axe. If you're not in particular need of an upgrade, get your next farm building.

Characters will sometimes tell you things their friends and family like or dislike, and sometimes they'll just tell you something they're fond of. Talk to people a lot and pay attention to what they say and you'll pick up some ideas, though it might not be enough to find out a loved item for every character - beyond that you'll have to experiment. Of course you can always fall back on things most people like rather than getting neurotic about making sure you're giving everyone their favourite thing all the time. Flowers and gemstones and such.

They fish up different things in fresh or seawater, and you won't catch any of the line fish.
