Pretty much; if you're getting to know a particular character you'll fairly quickly figure out their favourite haunts even if you can't beeline for which specific one they're at. Want to give a gift to Penny? Check her trailer, the library, the bench by the saloon or the tree by the graveyard. I couldn't tell you when she goes to each of these places, but I know they are most of what she does!

That's likely it - once you've talked to someone a few times they won't talk to you again that day. Though there's some situations where a character will just repeat their same lines, usually when it's specifically about what they're doing.

Are you ok Maru :stare:

(It kinda looks like the game just doesn't have a sprite for her kissing the PC while she's wearing her work clothes, so it shrugs helplessly and turns her into an eldritch beam of light or something instead)

That's exactly what it is. As far as I can tell, the game loads sprites at certain locations relative to the sprite sheet. The kiss sprite is way down at the bottom of each character's sprite sheet, but Maru's one for her work uniform doesn't go down that far, so the game is actually loading something from a completely different graphic. I think it might be part of the tileset of the room; it kind of looks like the borders where the rooms meet the black space.

Something similar happens with her portrait graphic. If you're at 10 hearts with her (but not married) there's a conversation you can have in winter where she cuddles up to you to keep warm, and it uses her portrait where she's clasping her hands together cutely (the other characters have a blush in this location but Maru's is different). If she's at work, though, her work sprite sheet has a horrified gasp graphic there, so it looks like she's screaming at you about being cold.

Has anybody got any general recommendations for upgrade priorities?

It's late Spring, I've got about 12k on me, a ton of copper and iron bars, a few hundred wood and stone, and the only upgrades to anything I've gotten are a copper pick and the first backpack upgrade.

I thought my next upgrades would be iron pick or copper axe, then hopefully silo (though clay is really holding me back right now), then maybe the backpack and then the house expansion. Does that sound sensible?

Just go for upgrades when you feel like you need them. Backpack getting full regularly? Upgrade it. Watering your crops taking you all morning and half your energy? Upgrade the can. Getting deep enough into the mines for your pick to need two hits to break a stone? Upgrade the pick. Cutting down trees too tedious, or need hardwood? Upgrade the axe.
If you're not in particular need of an upgrade, get your next farm building.

Probably I should buy charcoal instead of burning wood for it, but I prefer not to buy stuff that isn't seeds.

Don't use wood for charcoal; get to level 40 in the mines and never worry about coal again.

Does the game give any sort of hints for gifts? I don't want to do trial and error but I also would prefer not to spoil the whole thing by looking it up,.

Characters will sometimes tell you things their friends and family like or dislike, and sometimes they'll just tell you something they're fond of. Talk to people a lot and pay attention to what they say and you'll pick up some ideas, though it might not be enough to find out a loved item for every character - beyond that you'll have to experiment.

Of course you can always fall back on things most people like rather than getting neurotic about making sure you're giving everyone their favourite thing all the time. Flowers and gemstones and such.

Every dateable character has a scene for every two heart levels. The non-dateable characters are less consistent. That's all I know on the matter, though. Couldn't tell you any specific tough ones to find; usually the hard part is getting their relationships that high.

I think I've encountered a bug with regards to birthday gifts:
Penny's birthday is Fall 2. On Fall 1 I gave her a present, as normal. On Fall 2 I gave her a gift, she thanked me for remembering her birthday. I can't give her any more on that day (or for the rest of this week) but the Social tab shows I've only given her one this week.

What gives?

It definitely looks like a bug if it's displaying only one gift given but you can't give her any on fall 3. I assume this is tied to the fact you can always give someone a birthday present even if you've given them 2 gifts that week.

As for the fall festival, you are judged on variety of item types (eg fruit, vegetable, forage, mineral etc), the number of them with gold stars, and their total value. Artisan goods don't have random qualities but you can get gold star mayo or cheese by processing large eggs or milk.

Crab pots have their own separate catch list of mostly shellfish. They fish up different things in fresh or seawater, and you won't catch any of the line fish.
