I thought casting might be a non premium option, but I wasn't going to research it because its not clear what he's looking for anyway. I just threw emby out there because now they knows it exists and can figure it out themselves.

For awhile my Google Now new feed was flooded with articles from express.co.uk about how Kodi was terrible and about to be destroyed by the government for how much they aided piracy. I'm glad for any thing that fucks over these stupid streaming box and streaming addons.

It's not that I have a problem with piracy, it's that I have a problem with dragging Kodi through the mud to aid in it.

Speaking of which...I've been using emby as a backend for Kodi for months now with very little maintenance from me. I've got Kodi running on a traditional PC in one room and on a Shield in another room. At some point recently-ish I've got this problem where Kodi on the shield always gets a little out of sync on my watched/unwatched/progress status. So, like if I binge through a few episodes on the PC-based Kodi the Shield Kodi might show one or two of those episodes as not watched.

Anyone else encounter this?

What makes Kodi show an "HD" badge next to videos?

I ripped a bunch of TV episodes from a Blu-ray and some are listed as "HD", other random ones don't have any badge next to them. They were all from the same TV show (off of three different discs), ripped all at the same time with MakeMKV, then downsized slightly by running a batch process in Handbrake using the same options for all the episodes. Looks like they all have slightly different aspect ratios (weird), but are all 1920 px wide.

I also have the same issue with videos I ripped off of YouTube, but I figured that was due to random resolutions that some of the videos came in.

I think that is skin-dependent.

Otherwise, I have a Steam Link I haven't even unboxed yet, but I don't see anything too promising there.

I've yet to see a Pi running Kodi where I wasn't frustrated by the UI slowness...but if you can deal with that they run fine AFAIK.

Anyone else have the standard shield version? How do you manage with so little storage space? Sometimes plex will complain it has no space to convert an item. Then I have the issue that sometimes a movie will have no sound in plex but when opened in kodi it plays perfectly. I'm starting to regret my purchase because besides netflix nothing works properly.

Well...I mean if you're not going to add more storage then what did you expect? 16GB is 16GB.

I think generally speaking (at least in the various threads here on SA where we talk about using the Shield) people aren't storing their files on their Shield anyway. They'll have a NAS or something.

If Plex isn't playing your files then just use kodi. Not every video player can play every type of file...that doesn't have anything to do with the Shield it's just the way software and computers work.

What types of files are you trying to play?

I have had intermittent issues with keeping watched states in sync between kodi instances using the official Emby Kodi plugin.

I think I've figured out the issue, though. I use the Chromecast screen saver (whatever it's called) on my shield and I think that for some reason Kodi doesn't receive updates from Emby when that screensaver is active.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone having similar issues.

FWIW, one of the major reasons to use Emby or Plex with Kodi as the front end on your tvs is that new shows are indexed by their server processes.

Then the corresponding plugin keeps the Kodi database in sync with the backend.

I'll give Plex a shot. The only reason I use Emby is to feed Kodi meta data and offload all that scanning.

If I can get something to feed the Roku TV a couple prestige movies in huge prestige 4k/HDR encodes, I'll be happy with my setup and maybe just put the money towards a PS4.

The shield can play h265 in all its varieties.

It's worth installing emby or Plex server and using their corresponding Kodi syncing plugin because it's really easy to edit your library that way.

If you're philosophically opposed to this for some reason, then yeah, use MySQL.

Yeah. Mine syncs every time I start Kodi, but for some reason, some of the time, it just misses stuff.
