I picked up a Firestick on PrimeDay for the bedroom. Is MySQL still the best way to go for queue syncing? I don't have a plex server so I was wondering if there are any other newer methods.

Thermopyle posted:I hate to be always saying this, but a Shield TV is way better than an old PC and GT 1030 for all of the things you mention. I've been using Kodi for 10 years now and this is correct. Once I go a Shield everything was so much easier, especially if you are going to use any streaming service that has its own app.

LRADIKAL posted:Anything I need to keep in mind for this thing? Software to install? Common mistakes? Is there a recommended guide? Can I do the steam link thing or do I need to use the Nvidia tech? Just plug it in and go. It native Android so you open the play store and download Kodi. No need to root or jailbreak or sideload, etc. You can even get the emulators form the Play store and go to town. You'll see a menu for nVidia games and I think most of them use Steam so you just need to log in and download. I'll let others chime in on streaming. There are some decent games in Play Store as well, like Knights Of the Old Republic, that play pretty well on the Shield.

My NAS server needs to be retired soon. I've been looking at running Plex on a RPi3 but my understanding is that I only need to transcode on devices that can't. I have a FireTV stick and a Shield so they should do just fine on their own, right? I'd only be using Plex to host the library and tracked watched status

Ahh ok. So it looks like I can just have Plex (running on the shield) access my drives over the work and then it encodes them. I was thinking that all had to be done on one box. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS4VoUC1YM4

Anyone got this Rom Collection Browser in Leia RC to work? I can import ROMs and download Art but I just get a blank screen when they are done loading. I can long press to bring up the settings menu but have the delete the config in order to be able to escape out to the main menu. I'm using a fresh install of Kodi on a Shield. EDIT: It seems I'm just better off running the emulators directly off the Shield as that's pretty much all the browser does anyway. Bonzo fucked around with this message at 23:51 on Nov 25, 2018 |

EC posted:Is the person that runs the Kodi twitter like, 15 years old? Yeah they reply to poo poo like that all the time. I mean, I kinda get it. The Devs spend time creating the product which is then blasted in the media and subject to legal poo poo because of all the 3rd party crap so I can see them getting kinda salty about it. Typical tweets at them have been something like, "I've been trying all day to get FreeTVNowl33t to work and Kodi keeps crashing. What a waste of TIME!" But even before Twitter was around people would poo poo up the forums about this and than add on. Many legit addon Devs abandoned projects because some users demand premium support for a product they didn't pay for an was developed as someone's pet project. This is also a good example of why you keep Devs far away from customers.

I tried Emby about a month ago and uninstalled everything as soon as I saw a message saying that streaming is limited in the free version. I'd love to try Jellyfin but I prefer to keep using the Shield as a (Plex) server.

FeastForCows posted:I have a weird issue with Kodi. My Sony TV connects to my NAS to get the content for Kodi, separated into two folders for TV shows and movies. When I turn it on and start the app, I can't watch anything immediately, it will tell me that it can't connect to the network. I first have to go into the library and go specifically to the movie folder there, then I can go back and watch both movies and TV shows (if I start a TV show before doing this and just go back from the loading screen to do these steps, it will even start the show I clicked after I went to the Movies folder in the Library). What kind of drives do you have on your NAS? I once had a consumer USB drive hanging off a windows box that would sleep after so many hours of non use.

The Milkman posted:The shield's hardware is still plenty good despite pushing 5+ years old. It's the software updates to have ads take up the majority of the home screen, make it harder to get to launch stuff you actually want, and add even more prompts to let google listen to everything you do that is making it harder to recommend I love my OG Shield. The ads are a pain but I suppose it was inevitable. I believe there are lots of simple guide on how to launch directly into Plex/Kodi or just install a new launcher.

This is me but Plex. I bought an OG Shield to run Kodi but also to be able to access Netflix and other apps and doing this on older HTPCs was a pain in the rear end. Once streaming sticks became more the norm, Kodi just wasn't cutting it. I think the last time I may have installed it to see what the Plex plug in was like but got tired of the same old interface.

I have a 2015 Shield and bought the 2019 model a few months ago. Aside from the annoying GoogleTV loader (easier replaced) I have no complaints about it. Anyone seeing issue should check their logs or try a factory reset. The new Intel n100 CPUs are good and will have support for AV1 codec. A bit pricey but you'll get good use out of it. Portable as well. https://www.bee-link.com/beelink-mini-s12-pro-n100-mini-pc-clone-1
