Crashbee posted:Obviously the original stories and characters are out of copyright, but could they get in trouble for using Cumberbatch's likeness in their promotional materials? I guess it's the same as with LotR films and books rights. Even when Tolkien works become public domain, you'll still be in trouble for portraying Legolas as Orlando Bloom look-alike or lifting other distinctive things from the films. And even if your work is not commercial, the company that holds rights to the franchise can send you a sweet cease and desist if they don't want you to screw up their image, as it happened with several non-commercial LotR-based video game mods. Also see 'Candy Crush Saga controversy'. But then my knowledge of intellectual property rights is pretty much anecdotal, so I may be completely wrong.

Zach Weinersmith of SMBC is getting over $8k per month (that's about $100,000 annually, minus fees and taxes) and even Tim Buckley is pulling in over $2.5k monthly from Patreon. You can also limit how much you're willing to donate per month, so that creators couldn't just churn out three hundred zero-content videos in one month and disappear with all the money. That's slightly better than kickstarter, I guess. Edit: Also, love the photo on that patreon.

Snowglobe of Doom posted:That was the Tropes Vs Men In Videogames Indiegogo project (although the url actually says 'misandryinvideogames'), but you'll notice that the link is now dead since Indiegogo eventually decided they didn't want to deal with this poo poo after all. Someone actually looked into it and found the Tropes Vs Men guys apparently got their money but didn't make any videos or donate it to charities like they'd promised. I thought they've produced some evidence that they'd donated the money to charities, but people didn't believe them or something. Anyway, the of it all is that while people tend to criticise Sarkeesian for kickstarting a project that she could readily do on her own, there are literally thousands of youtube videos that either humorously or somewhat seriously try to analise 'misandry' in video games. So those guys didn't need money either.

It's like when Double Fine waited until after their second Kickstarter had closed and they'd gotten the money before they announced their difficulty with the first one, they knew that if people knew what was going on behind the scenes they'd be less likely to give them money. People still gave them even more money after that. And I'm alright with this, because the game they've made is actually good.
