This is more accurate.

A lot of parliamentarians don't show up unless there is some sort of big issue being discussed since they can just watch whatever is going on on the Alþingi tv channel.

Also, at Hamborgarafabrikkan I didn't understand a word they were saying, but I think I got the gist that they had a counter on the wall and announced and cheered any new Icelandic baby births. It was a pretty cool experience (if that's what it was). The food was good too.

It's cute but it's a real downer if there is an avalanche or a ship sinks and they have to take down a bunch of numbers.

A lot of the time the ferry goes from Þorlákshöfn instead, like it did for most of it's history until they decided to shave a couple hours of the sailing time by building a new dock closer to the islands. There's a large glacial river nearby that empties into the sea near Landeyjahöfn carrying with it a shitload of sand which builds up by the shore. When there is a lot of sand the harbour isn't deep enough for the ferry to use it. They do try to constantly pump out the sand but it's expensive and the pumpboats can't handle bad weather. A few times there's been 150+ days straight where the ferry has to use the older more reliable dock.

So not very reliable.

Just don't go on the first weekend of August. There's this big festival in the valley on the main island and about 10-16 thousand people go to get shitfaced and gently caress. Because of this every single hotel, guesthouse and hostel will be booked and all camping areas packed with rowdy drunken teenagers. The local businesses also tend to raise their prices around this time so everything goes from pricey to really pricey.

I highly doubt that iceland has a good mexican place.

There used to be a place called Santa Karamba downtown which was pretty good and I think operated and owned by actual Mexicans. They either moved or went of business because they aren't there anymore. Culiacan is alright but it's more of a health restaurant with Tex-Mex dishes than a full on Mexican place. There is a place called Taqueria which I think is supposed to be pretty good but I haven't tried it.

Finding good Thai restaurants on the other hand is pretty easy since they are all over the place, Krua Thai in particular is very good. Same for Middle Eastern places especially fast food kebab joints like Habibi. Oddly enough there aren't many Polish restaurants despite Poles being the biggest immigrant group.

I dislike 'traditions' like that because the President should be able to exercise his constitutional powers without being shamed for it. It's as if they want to treat him like any other Scandinavian royalty where the President's position and power is purely cosmetic, but that's not really how a Republic works.

That's sort of idea.

From 1918 to 1944 Iceland was in a similar situation as Canada in that it was fully independent in almost every single way except that the country still had a foreign monarch. From that point Iceland was no longer a colony of Denmark but a separate kingdom that just happened to have the same king as Denmark. When Iceland became a republic in 1944, while Denmark was still under German occupation, all they basically did was to switch out the word king for president in all mentions of the powers and responsibilities of the king and only do some very minor changes otherwise. Which results in a president that functions almost identically to a constitutional monarch except that he is elected.

In the run up to the foundation of the Republic there was a sizable chunk of Icelanders involved with the Independence movement who were still monarchists and thought the best solution was to find a new king. So they sought out a new king for Iceland among the nobility of Europe with a focus on Germany since there was a bit of a surplus of nobles there. The main candidate was the German Friedrich Christian prince of Schaumburg-Lippe. Friederic met with a group of Icelanders in 1938 but at that time he was one of the top members in Goebbels' propaganda ministry and agreed to consider the offer of kingship only if his superiors would allow it. Goebbels was all for it and even jokingly asked if the independent Iceland wouldn't need a propaganda minister. However someone above Goebbels, most likely Ribbentrop, opposed the idea so Iceland came very close to having a Nazi king in the late 30s. Now I think these talks weren't quite official and the Danish would've opposed it but if Germany had actually put their weight behind it it could very well have gone through and if that had happened I imagine the British occupation of Iceland during the war would've been a bit more of a violent invasion.

How is the left wing in Iceland anyway? IIRC they gained a lot of strength after the recession?

The socialist Vinstri Grænir(Left-Greens) and social democratic Samfylkingin (Alliance) gained a lot of strength were in government together from 2009 to 2013. Support for both parties dwindled a lot in the 2013 elections and the current right-wing government of the Progressive Party and the Independence Party took over. However after a string of scandals, most notably the Panama Papers, about 20 thousand people gathered in front of parliament and demanded a early election. The Progressive Party didn't want to but the Independence Party is good enough at PR to know that refusing to protesters would be bad for their image and also always gets at least 20% in all elections so they didn't have anything to lose.

Katrín Jakobsdóttir, the leader of the Left-Greens is the most trusted politician in the country according to basically every survey and is strangely more popular than her own party which is expected to be the third largest party after the Pirates and the ruling Independence Party.

The Social-Democrats on the other hands have basically collapsed. They went from almost always being the second largest party to being expected to get as little as 6% of the vote. Part of this is because of some internal leadership stuff and also a lot of the right-leaning voters seem to have defected to the newly founded Viðreisn (Restoration) and the leftists presumably to the Left-Greens.

A basic rundown of the parties:

Alþýðufylkingin (People's Front)
"Full Communism Now."

Björt Framtíð (Bright Future)
"Sustainable transparency!"

Framsóknarflokkurinn (Progressive Party)
"gently caress you, got mine (in an offshore account)"
alternatively
"Never trust no foraners. No Mohammedian musk should be built in Iceland!!"

Samfylkingin (Alliance)
"Moderate Social Democracy Whenever it's Convenient."

Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn (Independance Party)
"Privatize everything!"

Viðreisn (Restoration)
"Privatize everything and also join the EU!"

Píratar (Pirates)
Cyber-socialism.

Vinstrihreyfingin Grænt Framboð (Left-Greens)
"Nationalize most things!"

Íslenska Þjóðfylkingin (Icelandic National Front)
"We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children"

There is also:
Dögun (Dawn), Húmanistaflokkurinn (The Humanist Party), and Flokkur Fólksins (People's Party) but they don't matter. The People's Front is about as tiny as them but at least has the decency to be interesting.

Hey when the leftist coalition comes into power after the next election they'll probably be able to spend 4 years making what changes they can with a lot of resistance from numerous elements of both the private and public sector then have all the good they actually managed to do cancelled when the next right-wing government takes over. Like last time.

What is this I hear about Iceland practicing anarchy in the old days?

Anarchy in that they they didn't have any form of police or centralized state. There were plenty of laws and the althing, the parliament, even had a official called the Lawspeaker whose job it was to be chairman and remember all the laws and recite them to the assembly because there wasn't any writing beyond basic runic inscriptions so all oft the law was passed down orally. The lawspeaker obviously had to be an expert and a lawyer of sorts which could be consulted if there were any doubts or complications.

Things basically worked like this:

FreudianSlippers posted:

In the Icelandic Commonwealth the ruling class were chieftains known as goðar. The country was split into four regions and each regions had about 9 goðar and each goði had his "goðorð" which is a bit like a fiefdom except not quite. The title of goði was usually inherited but it could also be sold or given. Some goðar maintained temples and holy sites and held blóts. Each goði had his þingmenn, men who followed him to assemblies, supported him in conflicts in exchange for his protection and mediation in feuds. Since any free land owning man could choose which goði to follow the goðorð of each goði wasn't really based on geography. It's however likely that people usually choose the goði that lived closest to them out of convenience since medieval Iceland was very rural without any villages and with long distances between most farms following a goði that lived several weeks travel away might be a hassle and not sit well with the goði that lived closer. Every goði was a member of the alþing, a yearly national assembly that was both a parliament and a supreme court. The descendants of Ingólfur Arnarsson, the first permanent settler, held the title of Allsherjargoði (Roughly Goði of it all)which despite the fancier title didn't have any more power than anyone else but would sanctify the alþing each year. The highest title that anyone could hold was that of lögsögumaður (lawspeaker). Every three years the alþing would appoint a lawspeaker who would recite one third of the law each year and act as the chairman of the court.

Below the free land owning farmers were farm workers and basically everyone that didn't own land and below them were ómagar (vagrants and invalids) and below them were þrælar (slaves. Mostly from Scotland and Ireland) and outlaws. Slavery slowly faded away after the Christianization. Serfdom didn't really become the law until 1490 when anyone who didn't own or rent land was required to become a farm worker and not allowed to marry or travel freely.

In a lot of places on the continent you don't even need an ID to cross borders. You can literally just drive into the next country without anyone ever bothering you. My dad lives in Denmark but works a lot in Norway and sometimes on days off he nips over to Germany to stock up on soda and beer.
