Wendell posted:But it was so good "Whether Fall Brawl set a new standard for awful in PPV is a debatable issue. What isn't debatable is that it was near the top of any list of the worst wrestling PPV shows ever" - The Wrestling Observer Newsletter: September 21, 1998. "Fall Brawl featured a main event so bad it was even worse then people's imaginations would have been of the Jay Leno match going in. With the possible exception of the Triple Decker cage match a few years back on Uncensored and perhaps some Andre the Giant matches towards the end of his career, this may have been the worst PPV main event of all time, about 20 minutes of bad wrestling made worse by a finish that simply defied description. Unlike previous WCW shows with bad main events, they didn't have anything on the undercard with the exception of the Raven match that remotely saved it, and featured four other matches that would have won worst match on any normal 'bad' PPV show" - The Wrestling Observer Newsletter: September 21, 1998 "Rick Steiner went to a no-contest with Scott Steiner...Bagwell collapsed as if he'd re-injured his neck...The poor announcers had to sell it even though NOBODY in the crowd was buying it. They then had to do this long angle of the match ending, everyone acting concerned and Bagwell being immobilized and put on a stretcher and taken to the ambulance. It was torture because the crowd was booing rather than acting concerned. Since nobody bought it, nobody cared when when Scott and Bagwell jumped out of the ambulance and attacked Rick -*" - The Wrestling Observer Newsletter: September 21, 1998 "Juventud Guerrera retained the WCW cruiserweight title beating Silver King. The problem with the match at the outset was how evident it was that Silver King is no cruiserweight, except that all Mexicans are cruiserweights in WCW. Since Silver King has no credibility, the fans were chanting boring early. Juvi was wearing 'Sweet Surrender' on his trunks which I'm told is some kind of a gay deal which someone told him to wear as a practical joke" - The Wrestling Observer Newsletter: September 21, 1998. "Konnan beat Scott Hall in 12:03. Hall was doing a drunk gimmick, with Vincent holding a drink and Hall frequently taking swigs of it... Hall tried a hair pull on Konnan but there wasn't any...At another point, Hall held Konnan in an abdominal stretch and grabbed the drink from Vincent and began drinking...DUD" - The Wrestling Observer Newsletter: September 21, 1998 "After the main event, the live crowd was pissed about the match, the Warrior gimmick which is dying in every city, and the night in general, booing heavily and throwing things at the announcers. This was one for the record books. -****" - The Wrestling Observer Newsletter: September 21, 1998

ChrisBTY posted:My understanding was that as BatB was being booked Russo tried to get Hogan to job conventionally, but Hogan used his CC to shoot down every scenario that Russo concocted no matter how strong it made him look. So Russo went with the finish that we saw. Hogan agreed and that was that. Until Russo either let his frustration boil over in the promo or used the opportunity to go off-script, not realizing that that in and of itself was a violation of Hogan's CC. Maybe I was misinformed, but I'm not exactly inclined to disbelieve a story involving Hogan being uncooperative. The Booker/Jarrett match could have been concocted in a different manner so it doesn't necessarily contradict anything the Observer reported. I agree Bret screwed Bret.

ChrisBTY posted:Was there any specific reported reason why this was the Nitro that got Russo sent home? Souled Out was built around Bret/Sid for the world title and a 3 match series between Benoit and Jarrett for the US title. Bret was working with a concussion and it hosed him up to the point where he basically retired in the ring after this Nitro. Jarrett got the poo poo beaten out of him and got concussed in the Supafly Splash/Benoit Swandive Headbutt from the cage spot. With the entire PPV skeleton basically thrown out, Russo pushed for a Battle Royale to crown the new champion. He wanted Tank Abbott to come out and win. Between the booking of all the other titles (Madusa winning the cruiserweight strap and Oklahoma planned to go over on Souled Out, plus the entire tag tournament mess), plain horrible booking elsewhere, and poo poo ratings, him pushing for Tank "Quack Quack" Abbott as world champion was the straw that broke the camels back and why he got sent home. Then they put Kevin Sullivan up as booker and rebooked the ME to be Benoit going over Sid, trying to placate Benoit from leaving (it didn't work). They also randomly stuck Billy Kidman into Jarrett's spot on the card, wrestling 3 matches. OJ MIST 2 THE DICK fucked around with this message at 13:38 on Apr 20, 2017 |

Maxwell Lord posted:So they're still having the three match series but with someone not involved with the story at all. its been a while since I watched it, but they came clean and lead off the show with "Bret and Jeff are injured here's your replacement ME" and then the Revolution beat up Konnan and somehow Billy Kidman is now wrestling Malenko, Saturn, and a mystery man. All within like 5 minutes.
